Taking Control - new UI elements


Greetings! It's been a little while so I wanted to post a quick update on what is being worked on. As was planed after the last build release, I'm in the process of expanding and redesigning the user interface elements in the game. This has included decisions like how inventory will be displayed, what the new default key mapping will be, what options will be available on the quick bar (there will be a quick bar is the only thing decided so far) and many other small details that will hopefully making navigating through the game a more fluid and enjoyable experience.

In addition, I've finally settled on the main in-game font as well as the font for the logo. Both should start appearing in game as of the next patch.
That's it for now, back to working on the project...

Demo 20240124 - new dungeon rooms


Pushing out a new public release today. This implements the new dungeon rooms that were showcased in the video from last week. The old placeholder rooms have been completely replaced and this first set of new rooms is ready to explore.
While working on this release I also tested the new Niagra fluid plugin for replacing the torch flames however it caused some issues with shadows and was far too GPU intensive so it was pulled out.
Another issue that was discovered while play testing is that the final boss room does not always spawn the correct number of enemies. This is being investigated and should be fixed in the next release.
Next up on the roadmap is replacing the current menu system. This will bring several benefits including no longer needing a save stone in game (saves will still be disabled while in a dungeon), the ability to change key bindings, and also the ability to adjust graphics settings. Looking to the future, this change will allow selecting different difficulty settings, and also pave the way to fully implement ranged combat and spell casting.

New dungeon design elements


For this week, I don't have a new build but a sneak peek of what I'm actively working on. The existing placeholder rooms used to build the dungeons each time it's generated are being replaced. The new rooms are much more in line with the initial intent. There are still more rooms to come and several iterations before they're truly done but the new rooms are a huge step forward towards the final goal.
Also gone in this implementation are the key/lock pairs. This is a temporary situation until I add spawning locations for physicalized keys (and loot) to be hidden. Expect that as the dungeon design of virtual shards progresses, it will provide an exciting and challenging experience on each and every run through their halls.
I've posted a full video showing a run through of the new dungeon design. This is still very early concept work and may elements (like enemies) are still missing but the video should give a good impression of what to expect. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Version 0.0.0.5 - Tech Demo / Public Release

Version 5 of the tech demos brings the project back around full circle by adding the OSRController code back into the project and having it driven directly by an animation sequence.
While most of the controls haven't been hooked up to do anything at this point, you are able to connect/disconnect a compatible T-Code device (see Temptest MAx's site for more info) to the scene and follow along with the action. Moving forward, the additional control sliders will be hooked back up to control speed and intensity on Patreon builds.
As for the future of the project, all of the elements I wanted to cover for the demo phase are now present (though far from complete). Next, I will be heading to the pre-alpha phase which has the following roadmap:

  • Increase number of sex scenes
  • Provide multiple stages to scenes (foreplay, main act, climax) and transitions
  • Provide controls to modify speed and intensity
  • Setup attributes and abilities
  • Add item crafting, modularity, and bonuses
  • Refine companions AI
  • Refine loot and treasure spawning
  • Refine NPC spawn logic
  • Add additional room elements for variety
  • Reduce redundant assets for efficiency
  • Refine character and equipment models
  • Add character customization - First tier - gender selection

In addition to the end of the tech demo phase, it will also end the use of Virtual Shards as the name of the application. That has been the working name for the project but I'm excited to announce that a new name has been selected finally and all future releases will be under that title. Stay tuned for more updates over the next few weeks and more content!

Version 0.0.0.4 released


New build being released. This build gets the companions more in line with how that functionality is expected to work. They will now teleport into and out of the dungeon with you. I've also added the date/time and weather info to the saved game structure so this will be consistent between play sessions.
With this release, the saved game location has been changed. This was done so players don't have to search through their PC's hidden folders each time a new release comes out. Save game files are now stored in your documents folder in \Documents\My Games\VirtualShards\Saved\SaveGames
For future releases, planning to add more screenshots to the release notes. Also looking into getting a software signing certificate so Windows doesn't warn about unknown software when installing. This likely won't happen until there is more interest in the project.
This is a Subscriber only release. Subscribers will see a separate post with a link to download the game along with the full release notes.

Sex Scene Animations v0

Continuing the progress that was made in the last sprint with procedural animations, I've started work on setting up the first sex scene demo for use in the game. While no where near the final product planned, progress is going well. The initial plan was to have a demo build ready however it still needs some polish before releasing, even for an alpha demo.

In addition, I have identified a service to host videos and will begin using it soon. I am also working on bringing the Discord server for Virtual Shards online soon as well.
