1.5.0.0 Entering Final Testing


Content development is done for 1.5.0.0, so I thought I'd pop on and share what's left to do:
  • Set all side story maxquest variables to new values to ensure you can actually play the new side story scenes
  • Insert mainquest variable checks in the side stories 
  • Build Saffryn's DLC package
  • Full playtest of Season 2 Episode 5
  • Test of Saffryn DLC to ensure it works with a live copy of the game
And... that's really it. As I said, all of the content is done. Now it's just code adjustments and playtesting. I don't have much more to say, so how about some previews?
That's all for now. Gonna be making my adjustments overnight and putting the team through bugtesting. See you on the other side.

[PROGRESS REPORT] The Home Stretch! Get Ready for 1.5.0.0!


​Hoo boy. Been a while since you've seen one of these, huh?

We've been on fire lately. Saffryn is ready for early access release to T4 and up Supporters, and 1.5.0.0, the end of Season 2 Episode 5, is almost ready to ship. The main story section is completely finished, and we're just finishing up the side story scenes and the side story unlock pacing. In fact, I made this graphic 6 hours ago, and we finished 2 more side story scenes since then, so it's not even fuggin accurate anymore. 

I do wanna say one thing, though. Everyone who's been wanting River content is gonna be real happy this patch.

I stated this on a Supporter Only post, but we're waiting to put Saffryn into Early Access until 1.5.0.0 ships, and we've had a chance to fix any bugs that pop up. Saffryn's compatibility hooks are baked into 1.5.0.0, so releasing that first makes it so our Supporters don't have to update their game twice.

Since people keep asking, T4 supporters and up get to test out new DLCs and keep them for free as soon as they're ready to test. Regardless of the final price of the DLC.

T3 gets all FINISHED DLCs for free, as soon as they're marked Complete. Also regardless of the price of the DLC.

T2 gets a 50% Discount on all Itch.io DLC purchases. There is a pattern here. 

T1 gets a thank-you. 

It's $2. What do you expect.

ANYWAY, every since getting this new PC, all of my frustration with the VideoExport plugin has evaporated. It finally just works. No more freezing, no more hanging on encoding, no more retakes that aren't my own damn fault for forgetting to set the limit to Animation instead of Seconds after selecting an object and reselecting a character(animations that pop... you know the ones). And I'm beginning to think that most of my burnout was due to frustration with the equipment I was working with. I, personally, have gotten more done in these first two weeks of January than I had in October through December of last year. I can't promise I'll keep up this pace, but goddamn does this feel good. So I'mma use this. I almost hate that I have to go to bed in an hour 'cause I have more scenes I wanna do, but I know if I get locked in, I will keep myself up 2 hours past my bedtime... so I'mma have to be the bigger person and walk away.

That analogy makes no sense here, and I don't care.

But anyways, I've been having so much fun lately making WCA without all the frustration that I thought was part of the process. Mad difference some new equipment makes.

[PROGRESS REPORT] A Glitch in the Matrix

Alright, you might read some of this and decide you know what I'm gonna say, but I urge you to finish the post before you jump to any conclusions. 
The important stuff: WCA is not dead. It's not being abandoned. We absolutely intend to finish this game.
HOWEVER. This past month has been a bit rough on both the technical and emotional sides. 
First, my motherboard is going out. It's been going out for quite a while. My PC is... something like 6 years old, and it's on its last legs. Now, you might think this is where I'd be like, "I need your help, please give me money." But uh... no lol. I already bought a new PC and a new desk, and they're sitting in my office. So no worries on that front. After this coming Sunday, I'm gonna be dismantling my setup in my office, and over the next couple of weeks after that, I'll be working on building the desk and transferring all the programs I need from my old computer to my new one. 
The emotional side is a little complicated. I think I've been psyching myself out on this, NEEDING the rest of this episode to be some of the best content we've put out, and sort of forgetting Hank Green's 80% rule. It's been pretty difficult to make any progress because everything I do just seems Not Good Enough. I'm just not happy with it. 
Which makes me think we're all pretty burned out, so I'm thinking we just take the rest of the year off, catch a breather. I can work on the desk and the new PC in the meantime, and we can just chill out and maybe let some of the stress melt away. Come back fresh-faced in January, y'know?
So if anyone drops off the support sites, totally understand. We hope ya stay at least on the Free tier, so you get notified when we pick this back up. Thanks again for everyone's patience. 
Speaking of supporters, though, Phoenix thought it might be a good idea to host a dev AMA in our Discord to sort of relight our fire, our passion for this project. Fun part about ADHD is that none of my motivation is internal lol. I get excited about things when OTHER people are excited about them. So he thought it might be fun to have me answer questions submitted by people, and be around people who are talking about the parts they love about WCA. If you think that's a good idea, or something you'd like to be involved in, let us know.

[PROGRESS REPORT] Getting Ready to Throw Down

Hey all! Progress Report time!
Slowly but surely, we're getting there. Half of my struggle has been with the modeler that's doing Elowyn and Aurum's models from scratch. I mean, for fuck's sake, this doesn't even look like Aurum.
The team has, unfortunately, been in and out of extreme burnout, so things are going a lot slower than we'd like. The main hangup is this fight scene. I REALLY do not want to hand pose and shoot stills for this fight like I did with Willy. That took forever. But I'm also having significant difficulty finding a 3D modeler who can replicate Aurum and Elowyn from scratch. That, and I have 2 more Rebirth scenes to do, and I'm not sure what approach I should take. On one hand, I don't want to just swap the models and repeat the same little music video for each. On the other, I don't want people to feel like the two characters involved were robbed just because Nook had her ceremony first. And creating an entirely new video for each is way too much work and would push the next release back a month or more.
I have some ideas on how to solve this issue with a sort of middle ground. Still stewing on it, though.
I wish I could give a release date for the next patch, but having to fight with the modeler who cannot admit that he is clearly not skilled enough to deliver what I want is draining. If I put this model into a fighting game and recorded clips with it, it would be glaringly obvious that it wasn't Aurum. And I don't wanna break immersion like that. 
So I'mma keep fighting with him. Please, dear god, somebody tell me you know a modeler who can recreate this model accurately.

[PROGRESS REPORT/CALENDAR] Foot on the Gas

Hey all! Thanks for your patience. September is a rough month for all of us, and we don't tend to get as much done as in other months. Expect the same in May. However, lemme show you where we're at:
It's not a ton, but it's more than I thought we'd get done. Now that we're in October, we're coming out of the slump and our foot is back on the gas. Speaking of October...
I didn't forget this time? I know, right? What is this sorcery? From left to right, we have:

I'm still waiting on the 3D modeler I hired to deliver his work... cross your fingers for me, y'all. 'cause if this works out well, the next fight scene is gonna be amazing. 
Oh yeah, and Saffryn's DLC is a third of the way done. Just thought you might wanna know that. As soon as we get the currently written scenes shot and bugtested, we'll do a small update to the main game so it can detect her DLC and we'll push her out so T4 supporters and above can test out her story and give us early feedback.

[PROGRESS REPORT] Fingers Crossed for a New Fight Idea

Hey, all! Been a little longer than I'd like since the last progress report, and that's because I was aggressively pursuing an idea I had for the upcoming fight scene. 
But first! Here's where we are:
But what about that idea? Essentially, I thought it'd be cool to have video clips instead of stills for the upcoming scene, because this fight is pretty damn important. Imagine using the same fight menu system, but when you select a move, you get this:
