New character ui
Battle and UI rework
The current combat system is far from ideal. It’s hard to expand, and many features simply couldn’t be added.
I’m now laying the foundation for a much more expandable combat system. This includes the introduction of attributes such as Strength, Fitness, Intelligence, Constitution, Memory, and Wits. These attributes will make each character’s role on the battlefield much clearer.
Here’s what they affect:
Strength, Fitness, Intelligence — Determine the damage of specific skill sets. Skills will now scale with these stats.
Constitution — Increases HP.
Memory — Controls the number of skill slots.
Wits — Affects initiative and critical hit chance.
Skill Slots
Right now it’s easy to reach level 10, and every level adds one new skill to your arsenal. By level 20 or 30 this turns into a complete mess.
That’s why a slot system has been added. At level 1 you can only have 3 active skills. As the Memory attribute grows, the number of available slots increases.
New slot system Initiative
Currently every fight follows the same pattern: player turn → enemy turn → world turn. In this setup a player can kill the final boss as early as level 5.
Battles will now be turn-based and driven by initiative.
Magical and Physical Armor
Items have also been reworked. Instead of resistance to a specific damage type, there is now protection against damage groups. The amount of protection granted depends directly on the intended armor class — mages get more magical armor, warriors get more physical armor, and so on.
AI Rework
Because of all these changes, enemy AI has been completely overhauled. It is now significantly smarter: it plans actions for the entire turn, chooses the best skill for the situation, and much more.
The AI has become so good that I’ll have to rebalance every enemy from scratch. Mages are no longer useless, by the way.
UI
Naturally, the UI has also been updated to better display the new information. You can see the changed parts of the interface on the screenshots.
I did it! After 6 months of work, I finally completed Act 0 of Noble Utopia! That means the entire Waterfalls region is finished! The battle system is complete, the characters are finished, the quests are working, and the animations have been created!
Most of these 6 months were spent creating pipelines for everything. Yes, adding new animations, races, classes, and locations is now much easier.
Example of dialogue What is in the game?
Act 0, also known as Near the Beach, or "Life is a Beach" in the dev docs.
5 unique locations in the Waterfalls region.
4 follower characters with their own stories.
A JRPG battle system.
A lot of enemies.
6 animation chains with 25 animations in total.
6 classes.
40+ items.
40+ skills.
Humble beginning What is next?
Polishing the current state of the game. Expanding the world with new locations and quests. Adding books to read. Implementing new quest lines. And much more.
