Summer Scent is my first project.



It's the beginning of summer. Jack is 18 years old and has just finished high school by graduating.
He has a tense relationship with Eve, his childhood friend who seems to have disliked him cordially for a few years.
Jack's parents had left town for a week, Eve invites her best friend, Cassie, to join them.
They have the house and the pool for them alone.
How Jack will handle the situation depends on you.



The game is a visual novel. Your decisions will have consequences and will influence the story and its conclusion.
You will be able to change the name of the main characters.
Images are Full HD renders (1920x1080).



The game should be rather short but it will be an adequate size for a first experience. I hope you will enjoy it.

Latest version available to 5$ subscribers : Summer Scent V0.4.1.
It covers the story up to the end of Day 4.

It has been a very busy and intense week!

The work on V0.5 continues.
Post-processing is done. Unless I found something to correct, I have reviewed every render.

I'm currently testing and tweaking the game.
I have greatly underestimated the time needed to review 15 000 lines of code. I hoped to be finished with it today but it probably won't be done until Sunday.

My proofreader still has a few scenes to deal with, but the work is mostly done.

The beta testing should begin on Monday and last a week. I still aim to release V0.5 for the Sailing Masters tier around the 25 of January.

I've found some texture problem in a large part of the renders of V0.5.
I can't just spot render the corrected parts, nor even rerender the whole render where that problem is present. My new rig seems to be rendering things differently than what my previous set up used to. So, to correct the problem, I would have to rerender every picture. Even better, I had that same problem on the previous content but I didn't notice it
I just don't have the time to do that before the release so, yes, V0.5 will be released as it is. I will correct the problem later.

Dev Update #72

The posing for scene 25 is done. A few shots have yet to be rendered, It'll be done tomorrow while I'll be coding scene 25.

Here is a list of what remains to be done before I can release v0.5 :
  • Correcting the script. My proofreader did his job, I need to report these corrections onto the script.
  • Post-processing. Balancing light and contrast on every render. I also have some spot correction to apply on a few images.
  • Bug correction. I have a couple of bugs to solve on in Day 4 content and the ui.
  • Testing and Balancing. Testing the game and review the code. I have to review every condition and test, every value and make sure that everything chains as it should be.
Completing this todo list should take about a small week. If everything goes according to the plan, the game should be ready for beta testing on next weekend (About the 16th of January?), and for release on the next one (The 23th of January).

Dev Update #71


Scene 25!
Writing is done. I'm posing it. I've done roughly 60% of it with about 40 shots posed. I hope to finish it this week. I'm also doing some rewriting but nothing major.

So... I should finish the posing and rendering this week. What's next? I'll need a couple of day in order to do some post-processing.
I'll then spend a few days reviewing the code, testing the game and balancing tests, conditions, values and variables.
Then a week of beta testing, just to be sure that I haven't forgotten anything.

I guess we can expect a release in the last week of January. Maybe a bit sooner if I'm particularly efficient.

I had initially planned to rework some features but I'll postpone it to a V0.5.5 version. I think you have all waited enough.

V0.5 is twice as big as V0.4 was.
It's the last time I produce a release this big.
In the future, I'll split the days into several parts so that I can release something, at least, every three or four months.

Scene 24 is complete. Rewriting, posing, rendering, and coding are done.
I'm working on Scene 25. The last scene of V0.5.
I wanted to write it this week but I couldn't finish it, mainly because of Christmas as it took away almost two days of my week. For now, it's around four thousand words long and I think that I need one to two thousand more words to complete it. I'll work on it this weekend and I hope to finish it shortly so that I can start posing it on Monday.

I haven't finished rewriting and posing scene 24 but I'm almost there. I still have around six hundreds words of the script to review and post but the most difficult part (aka the "action" part) is complete. I don't think I'll rewrite much of it aside from adding a couple of sentences. And the posing should represent something like 7 to 10 more shot to pose. No more.I'll work on it tonight and I'll finish it tomorrow. I'll code it on Sunday.
That means that I'll start working on the last scene of V0.5 on Monday. It's already outlined but I don't really know how big it will be. According to what is already done, it should be a medium-sized scene but things can change as I write them.

Dev Update #68


The work on scene 23 & 24 is still going on.
I've finished rewriting and posing Scene 23. I've also scripted it and I've sent it to my proof-reader. It got a bit bigger, and I made a few more renders than I had planned but it's done. Eve's submission scene is ready.
Starting tomorrow I will focus on posing, and probably rewriting some parts of Scene 24. It's much smaller than scene 23 as there is only one variant of Eve's love event. I hope to be done with it within the week, scripting included.
Scene 25 is mostly drafted. Once I'll be done with Scene 24, the writing of Scene 25 should be fast.
I feel like I need to improve my workflow when it comes to transforming my scenes into a script usable by renpy. Right now I lose a lot of time formatting the script line by line. It took me 6 hours to transform the 7700 words of scene 23 into a 1254 lines long renpy script. It's way too much. I think I can improve that by changing my writing habits. It's a thing I'll have to look into once I'll be done with V0.5.

Dev Update #67


I'm still working on posing Scene 23 & 24.
So far, I've posed 55 shots, covering the common introduction to both scenes and the entirety of the first variant of scene 23. Just like for Cassie love scenes, I'm doing several custom poses, from scratch, and that takes a lot of time.

I've lost a day and a half of work this week.
First with a shader bug that I finally managed to solve. I had already encounter that problem during the development of v0.4, but couldn't manage to find a solution. It's now done and I'll know how to solve that when I'll encounter it again.
And second, I've done quite a bit of rewrite and had to re-pose some shots that were already done. That idea was so good that I just couldn't do otherwise.

In the last dev update, I've mentioned that I would probably have to do around 110 shots for Scene 23 + Scene 24. With 50 shots just for the first part of Scene 23, I guess I'll end up doing more than that. I hope that all the Eve lovers out there will be pleased.

Scene 23 and 24 are written. For now, it's 9300 words long, separated into four sections: three for the sub path (scene 23), and one for the love path (scene 24). Some rewrite will probably happen during the posing.

I've received my new rig and Daz is ready to pose and render. I've recreated my assets library and have everything necessary for posing scene 23 and 24. I've tested my new hardware a bit and so far it seems to work just fine. Files don't load as fast as I hoped they would, but there is a tremendous improvement in rendering and simulation speed. I can't wait to work with that stuff.

I'll start posing Scene 23 and 24 tomorrow. I expect difficulties with custom poses and such. We'll see how it turns out. There are 9300 words of "intense" content so I'll probably have to pose around 100 / 110 shots.

We're getting close to the end of V0.5. The release feels more and more real.

Dev Update #65


Scene 22 is posed, rendered, and scripted. With that scene, V0.5 has passed the 800 renders mark.

I'm now working on writing Scene 23 AND Scene 24. These are the two events for Eve in V0.5. They're actually two versions of the same event but they will be 99% different depending on the path you choose. 

I don't intend to pose anything before I get my hands on my new rig (that should be ready on Monday, maybe Tuesday...). So I'm going to write until then. That means Scene 23, 24 and maybe scene 25 if the rig is late but I'm sure it will be there right on time.

I'm a bit worried about bug reports on the last version of Daz studio. I won't have a choice but to work with it on the new Pc-chan. Fingers crossed I'll get lucky with it. I guess I'll still be able to work with my current equipment if I have to, but it would feel like defeat.

Scene 22 writing is done. It's 7600 words long, split into three different versions. It's... a bit longer than what I expected but I'm happy with it.

I'm now working on posing that scene. I think it will be a bit easier than for scene 21 because even if there's a lot of custom poses, there's also several shots that will be reused across all three versions. I don't expect to pose less than 50 shots though.

I couldn't get much work done today because I had to take a stroll to a nearby city in order to secure a new rig. The good news is that I should soon get my hands on a far better rendering station. It shouldn't really cut on the rendering time because I will probably try to up the quality instead. However, it should make working with Daz Studio globally faster.

Scene 21 posing is done. The rendering is complete, and I also scripted it. It's now in the capable hands of my proofreader. It was pretty intense to write and pose. But I think that the results are good. The posing has been especially difficult with many custom poses to work from scratch. I should have expected it.

I'm now working on writing scene 22. This is on Cassie's dom path. I know that this isn't the most popular part of Summer Scent but I actually like writing that part of the story. Cassie is a complex character and I enjoy working on her. The scene itself will be split into three parts. The first one is already written. It's 2400 words long for now. 
I'm pretty happy with that first part. Just as scene 21, it's going to be very intense.

I'm still working on scene 21.
I finished writing it. The whole thing is 5550 words long, separated in three different versions.

I've started posing it a few days ago already and it takes forever. I've posed 24 shots for now. For half of these, I had to build a 100% custom poses for the characters, from scratch. And that takes a lot of time.
These 24 shots posed barely represent one-fourth of scene 21.
Rendering as also started and a few shots are already done.

I also reworked the lights of the master bedroom a bit. It's where the action of scene 21 takes place. The first renders are looking good. For now, I'm pretty happy with the results.

I'm going to take a few hours break before going back to posing.

Scene 20 is posed, rendered scripted and has been sent to my proofreader.

I'm currently writing Scene 21. What can I say about it?
Well, it's on Cassie's love path. There are two versions of it. I've mostly finished writing the first version. It's 3500 words long. Things are getting intense for Jack. The second version should be much shorter and I hope to finish writing it tomorrow.
The posing will probably take some time. I don't expect to do less than 60 to 80 renders for that scene, and some shots will probably be quite difficult to pose.

I've already said that scenes 19 to 25 were what I call "Naughty" scenes. However, scene 19 and 20 are on the emotional side of the naughty scale. Scene 21 to 25, on the other hand, are more on the "action" side.

V0.5 has passed the 60 000 words and 700 renders marks. And I still have 4 and a half scene to write and 5 to render.

I've finished posing and rendering Scene 19. It will need some added work in post-processing but I'm satisfied with the results.
I've also coded the scene and sent it to my proofreader.

Scene 20 is written. It's 3830 words long for now. I'm mostly happy with it but I don't exclude some rewrite to happen during the posing.
Scene 20 is a two parts scene. Depending on your relationship status with the girls you will see one part, or the other, or both. It's a bit bigger than I expected (as always).
I'm currently posing it. I expect some difficulties on a couple of shots because of interactions between characters but nothing unbearable.
The first batch of shots is ready to be rendered tonight.

Dev Update #59


The coding of scenes 15 to 18 went smoothly and everything has been sent to my proofreader.
I've also applied his corrections on scene 7 and 8.

Scene 19 is written. It's 3000 words long. A bit more than I expected. I've already scrapped and rewritten part of it. I'm currently posing it and I've rendered the first shots.
Scene 19 is an "exterior night" scene, taking place by the pool. I've already done a scene like that in V0.3 and I wasn't very happy with the results. This time, I've tried a different solution and I think that it looks better than my first attempts. As always with that kind of situation, isn't really to make a good picture. It's to do it in a reasonable time, as I can't afford to spend 10 hours rendering a single shot.
I've already posed 18 shots. I'll probably do 20 to 30 more to complete the scene. 
My objective of the weekend: to finish posing scene 19. After that, I'll code it and send it directly for proofreading. I'll be happy if I can start writing Scene 20 on Monday morning.

The quick sum up :
  • Day 5 will contain 25 scenes.
  • Scenes up to Scene 19 are written.
  • Scenes up to Scene 18 are posed and rendered.
  • Scenes up to Scene 18 are coded.
  • Scenes up to Scene 8 are proofread.
  • 53 135 words. 7836 lines of script. 619 renders are done, 636 shots are posed.
  • I'm currently working on posing scene 19.
