Summer Scent is my first project.



It's the beginning of summer. Jack is 18 years old and has just finished high school by graduating.
He has a tense relationship with Eve, his childhood friend who seems to have disliked him cordially for a few years.
Jack's parents had left town for a week, Eve invites her best friend, Cassie, to join them.
They have the house and the pool for them alone.
How Jack will handle the situation depends on you.



The game is a visual novel. Your decisions will have consequences and will influence the story and its conclusion.
You will be able to change the name of the main characters.
Images are Full HD renders (1920x1080).



The game should be rather short but it will be an adequate size for a first experience. I hope you will enjoy it.

Latest version available to 5$ subscribers : Summer Scent V0.4.1.
It covers the story up to the end of Day 4.

Dev Update #41


The posing of Scene 4 took longer than I expected. There wasn't any difficulty, I just ended making more shots than I first envisioned.
However, It's done. Scene 4 is now fully posed and it will render overnight.

With this scene, V0.5 has passed the 110+ render mark.

Some rewriting also happened during the posing. As usual.

I'm now working on writing scene 5.

I've added Discord Roles to the rewards. If it doesn't work properly for you, let me know and we'll find a solution.
Tiers have also been renamed.

Dev Update #40


I worked and still work on posing.
As expected, Scene 1 was difficult to deal with, but it's done. I've spent several days on it. Scene 2 was much easier to pose. I'm currently working on Scene 3.
As I mentioned in a previous Dev Update, I also reworked Jack's clothes. Nothing crazy. Jack isn't really a fashionista.
I've also spent some time reworking the girls' clothes but didn't manage to get something quite satisfying. I still have time, though, as the first scenes are mostly sleepwear/sportswear and I don't really need the new outfits before the next sets of scenes.
As I started rendering, the render previews will be back, starting today.

The quick sum up :
  • Day 5 will contain 22 scenes.
  • Scenes 1, 2, 3, and 4 are written.
  • Scenes 1 and 2 are posed.

Dev Update #39


I don't have much to say this week.

I finished writing Scenes 1 to 4. The word count is now about 9500 words. I'm mostly happy with what I wrote. I still may rewrite some part of it at some point but for now I'm happy with it.
I'm currently working on the posing of Scene 1. I've lost some time with a shader problem but it's now solved.
There will be some difficult poses in Scene 1 but Scenes 2, 3, and 4 should be pretty easy to pose.

About project management.
As I mentioned last week, I searched for a way to give you some more frequent and regular information about the development of the game. I came up with this Trello Board. I'll still publish a dev update every week with a report on what I worked on during the week. Let me know if you find it informative and useful to you.

Dev Update #38


Here is a very short update.

I'm writing.
I reworked my story map again and added a couple scenes so that some events will make more sense. So there are now 21 scenes on Day 5.
Scenes 1 and 2 are written. I'm 4000 words into day 5.
I stopped working on the posing of scene 1 to concentrate on the writing as scenes 1 to 4 are very closely related. I want to write these four scenes in one go before really working on the posing.

However, I'm still trying things with Daz.
Day 5 will take you to new places. You've already seen the police station and there will be at least one more new location. New clothes also. Eve's shirt on Day 4 looked pretty nice on her but was a pain in the ass to fit. I'll probably change it on day 5. The same goes for Jack. I have a lot of things to try. We'll see how it goes.

I also need to find a better way to show my advancement in the project. I've seen some dev offering some kind of "progression bar" but I'm not sure I can work with that. If you have any idea, I would be grateful to read it.

Dev Update #37

Day 5 story map

Day 5.
The outline and the mapping of day 5 are done. I'll probably still change a few things as I'll write the scenes but for now, I'm happy with what I envisioned.
Day 5 will consist of 19 scenes (maybe 20 as I'm having new ideas as I write this dev update).
I've started writing the first one.

Official android port.
I've made an android port for V0.4.1.
The ability to name saves included in V0.4.1 caused a lot of problems on android so I simply removed it. Testing the build was a real pain in the ass and took me hours. Everything should work. If not, you can report any bug on my discord channel.

V0.4.1 Itch.io & Gamejolt release, public version.
Summer scent V0.4.1 is now available on Gamejolt and will be available on Itch.io as soon as I've worked out the filesize limit problem with the staff.
V0.3.5 is now the latest free public version.

Subscribestar goals and rewards.
I think it's time to have a little talk about goals and rewards.

When I originally set up this page, I truly had no idea what to propose as goals and I filled that part with some basic and mostly meaningless content.

  • The first goal is "500$/month - I'll buy more assets." Obviously, I didn't wait to reach that step to buy more assets.

  • The second goal is "4000$/month - I'll work full time on the game." I'm already working full time on the game since the last December.

  • The third goal is "6000$/month - I'll buy a better rendering station." Well, I still haven't changed my hardware, but I'll invest in a new rendering station way before I'll reach that step. As soon as I have saved 5000$ and  Nvidia has released its Ampere products, I'll go for it.

Honestly, I still don't know what is a good goal. I have a feeling it should be something that I give back to the community more than a way to improve the game or my personal life. So I'm asking you. What do you think would be good community-oriented goals?

I have a similar problem with rewards.
I have no idea what to offer, aside from the game and the preview renders. What do you think would be interesting for existing tiers or hypothetic higher ones?
I don't want to offer things that change the game or take too much time to do, like "bonus scene" and so on. A week spent working on this kind of reward is a week I don't spend working on the game itself.

About the credits page.
Also, there is something that I plan to change in the rewards. The "your name on the credits page" part. Right now it's only the level 3 supporters who get it. I plan to change that. Some 5$ supporters who have supported me for months don't have their name on the credits page while they actually gave me way more than several 10$ one-timers that are thanked in the game.
Starting with V0.5, everyone who supported me with 10$ or more in total will be on the credits page.
It may not be important to most of you but I really think that it's important to properly thank everyone.
Of course, if you don't want your name to appear on the credits page, you just have to message me and let me know.

Dev update #36


Now that Summer Scent V0.4.1 is released I'm back working on Day 5 content.

Beware of spoilers.

  • I'm not completely satisfied with the outline I wrote. There's a couple of scenes I need to rethink. For now, I've planned 16 scenes and I think about adding a couple more.
  • As you can see in this post illustration, I'm testing new assets. This is officer Marion Smith. Depending on the path and various choice Jack previously made, he may meet him during Day 5. This is still a work in progress, of course, and the set up may change as I already know that this scene will be very difficult to render time-wise.

Summer Scent V0.4.1 has been very well received and I want to thank everyone who supports me in this journey. It may sound a bit cliché but it's utterly true: the game wouldn't exist without your help. I wouldn't be working on this game if you weren't supporting me.

Summer Scent V0.4.1 released !



Here is the release.
It's V0.4.1 and it's available for level 2 supporters, in this post.

A quick changelog :
  • Some typos have been corrected.
  • Some stat checks were missing and some conditions were misplaced.
  • You can now name your saves.

About the walkthrough :
It only shows the key choices and important triggers of the story and which scenes are affected.
You'll still have to watch out for the necessary stats points on your way.
I'll try to keep this monstrosity updated with each new version of the game.
Of course, it's filled with spoilers.

With this release, I can go back to work on V0.5. I've already started to outline Day 5 but I have many things to test and plan before really starting writing. I'm 100% focused and motivated.

Dev Update 35


Heya!

It's done.
V0.4 is out for early access.
Level 3 supporters can download it from this post.
Level 2 supporters will have access to it in 7 days.

A few words about this release.
It's the biggest release so far. The game size is now flirting with the 1 go.
I tried new settings for the renders and I have mixed feelings about it. I'm pretty happy with the level of details and some renders are pretty clean, however, some other renders are very grainy. There's nothing I can really do about it without upgrading my rendering station and I won't do that before the end of this year. I'll have to do with what I have.

About save compatibility :
I've made changes to the asshole path. If you were playing this path you will have to restart your game.
To be clear :
In V0.3.5 you could be a total asshole and still go shopping with the girls. That wasn't intended and is now corrected.
You could also fail the coffee shop test and still receive Kelly phone call. That was also unintended and has been corrected.

Change log :
  • Day 4 content. 480 renders, 44 000 words of dialogue, 8300 lines of code.
  • Some problems with the asshole path have been corrected (see save compatibility).
  • Added an option on Day 2 living room discussion with Cassie. You can now play a true neutral path. No love, no submission, no domination, no asshole behavior. Just a friendly dude. Yes, there will be content exclusive to this path later (as for every other path).
  • The stat tracker should now be activated by default. You can still disable it in the preferences menu.
  • Corrected, some choices too long to display correctly.
  • Corrected, name and text size have been reduced a bit, to allow the use of longer names and contents.
  • Corrected, some typo!
  • Plenty of other things I have forgotten about.

As always, You can report any bug, continuity error, typo and so on on the discord channel.

Dev Update #34


Heya!
As promised, this will be the last dev update before Early access for V0.4.

The script is fully corrected.
Scene 18/19 renders are done.
I'm currently reviewing the entire code, line by line, tweaking and debugging.
I'll continue the cycle test/balancing until I'm satisfied but it shouldn't take much longer now, I'll probably be done with it by tomorrow.
I still have a few things to correct in the previous days' scripts and to work on the post-processing of all day 4 renders.
It should be done by Monday.

So.. yeah, V0.4 should be ready by Monday. I'm going to keep a couple of days in reserve in case I find some renders in need of a rework.

That leads us to early access for level 3 supporters next Wednesday (maybe earlier if I'm done with it.) and a week later for level 2 supporters.

I'm really eager to know what you think of V0.4.

Dev Update #33


A quick update on the development of Summer Scent Day 4.
There is not much to say. As I explained in my last update I didn't work on the renders of scenes 18/19. I focused on preparing and coding all scenes so I could send them to my proofreader.
And it's done. All scenes have been sent. Corrections have already been made up to scene 12.

So... what remains to be done?
  • Posing and rendering of scenes 18/19. That should be pretty easy. 30 renders should be more than enough.
  • Post Processing. One day of work, maybe one and a half.
  • Bug fixes. I have a small list of bugs to correct on previous content.
  • Testing, tweaking, testing again, again and again. Just to be sure everything works as intended. 
  • Correction of scenes 13 and up, when my proofreader will be finished with it.

The next dev update should be the last one before early access.

Hello.

The situation here with the covid 19 related lockdown is getting pretty absurd. We now have to wait in line for hours just to get in a shop. Shelves are still mostly empty. Some hoarders are stripping them of everything as soon as they're refilled. Things like toilet paper (why ? seriously?), flour, pasta, rice, and sugar are now nearly impossible to find. We should all be confined but there are still morons strolling in the streets like nothing is happening.

Anyway, let's talk about Summer Scent.

I finished posing scene 17 but I finally rewrote a lot of it. It took me quite some time but it's finally done. However, I'm now pretty happy with the results. I hope you'll like it.
Writing of scenes 18 and 19 is done. I'll probably rewrite some minor parts of them while working on the posing but I'm already satisfied with what I produced. I've started the posing, but I'm going to put it on pause for a few days so I can work on something else. I need to code some scenes so I can send them to my proofreader.

As of now, V0.4 contains :
  • 42000 words
  • 456 renders

Remain to be done :
  • Posing Scenes 18 and 19
  • Coding scenes 10 to 19
  • Correcting the script when proofreading is done.
  • Post-processing.

Heya!

It has been a very strange week here in France. As you may know, the whole country is on lockdown due to the covid 19 outbreak. The lockdown doesn't really impair my ability to work but it makes daily life much more difficult. I've lost three hours this morning trying to find something to eat.
Between the restrictions on access to shops and the empty shelves, it is difficult to shop for food normally. There shouldn't be a shortage, but some people are in full panic mode and are uselessly stockpiling. Let's hope it gets easier soon.

How is the development going?

  • Scene 16 is fully done.
  • Scene 17 is written, posing is halfway done.
  • Scene 1 to 6 are coded and proofread.
  • Scene 7 is coded and has been sent to proofreading.
  • The scene 18 / 19 combo is half-written but I'll probably make some heavy changes to it before posing it.
  • Scene 8 is half-coded.

Scene 18 / 19 should be smaller than the other conclusions scenes. I have reasonably high hopes to finish it, posing and rendering included before the next dev update. After that, I'll be in full coding mode. The release of v0.4 is near.

Heya!

Once again, I couldn't fulfill all of my objectives for the week.
Scene 15 renders are done, Scene 16 is fully written and I'm halfway done with its posing. It's a 4000 words scene with two different versions.
On the coding side of things, Scene 4, 5 and 6 are coded and sent to my favorite proofreader. It's also a consequence of writing longer scenes: coding takes more time than I expected.

Maybe it's time to describe my writing workflow for V0.4. It may explain why it takes me so much time to release this version.

I have a map for the general events of the whole game, separated along two narratives axes: the first one being the evolution of the relationship of Jack with the girls, the second, being the story with the events with the two psycho brothers. For each axes, I have a calendar of what will happen.
When I start working on a new day, I first proceed to outline all the scenes. That's the moment where I add minor events that won't have a longlasting impact on the story. Like little things that won't really matter but will make the story more believable. The outline is like a simple storyboard:  how many scenes, where, who, what, notes about dialogues, ideas about poses and movements.  I work on these notes until I have a clear and believable plan I can work with. For V0.4 it took something like a small week.
Then come the moment where I start working on the actual scenes.
I start with writing, of course. Following my outline, I can write a first draft pretty quickly (Usually one day).  Taking scene 16 example (Eve's love scene in Day 4), the first draft was roughly 2500 words long.
But I'm never satisfied with the first draft. So I rewrite it. I reread it, keep what I think is good, rework everything else. One or two days later, I end up with a second draft that I found much more satisfying. (Still going with Scene 16 example: 3500 words long, two variants.)
I then move to posing the scene. Doing so, I reread the scene, over and over, and over. Inevitably, I end up rewriting part of it again, because posing gives me new ideas of interactions which in turn give me ideas for dialogues.
In the end, producing scene 16, already took me four days, with three days of writing and it's now 4000 words long (and I still have one or two days of posing to complete it).

I have no idea how other devs and writers out there work but it's my way of doing it and I hope you'll like the result in V0.4.
Honestly, I didn't take as much care of the writing for v0.1 and v0.2, for several reasons: English is not my native language, and I was very impatient to release something. The writing thing really started in V0.3. And I kind of regret it. I'm thinking about fully rewriting Day 1 and Day 2 once the game is finished.

Let me know what you think of that.
Maybe I'm writing too much?

Current State of V0.4 :
  • 37 000 words
  • 370 renders.
  • Scene 1-6 are coded.

Remains to be done :
  • Finishing scene 16 posing.
  • Writing and posing Scene 17 (Eve's Sub scene). I'm not gonna lie, it will be a big one.
  • Writing and posing  Scenes 18/19 (The asshole combo). These should be shorter.
  • Coding and proofreading.
  • Post-processing. It took me less than one day to process all V0.3 pictures. It shouldn't be much longer for V0.4.

It's almost 07 pm here in France as I'm writing this. I'm going to take a couple hours break before going back to posing scene 16.

Heya!
I couldn't work on the game this weekend, as a consequence, I couldn't advance as much as I wanted.

I changed the order of the scenes. I said in my last update that scene 15 was supposed to be Eve Love scene but it's finally Cassie Dom scene.

So, scene 15 is fully written, and I'm halfway done with the posing and rendering. I hope to finish the posing tomorrow. It's a big scene with several possibilities and different outcomes. It's 3000 words long. I hope you'll like it.

I started writing scene 16. And this time, it's really Eve Love scene.

I was supposed to prepare a few scenes to send to my favorite proofreader but I finally decide to fully code them. As a consequence, scenes 1 to 3 are fully coded and have already undergone proofreading. I hope to be able to code up to scene 6 or 7 this week. Scene 4 is coded but I didn't send it to my proofreader yet.

For v0.5 I'll probably change my workflow and go back to coding scenes immediately after I've written them, so I can send it to proofreading earlier in the development process.

As of now, Day 4 is 33 500 words long and 325 renders. If I continue writing this much, Day 4 may end being as large, writing-wise, as the whole game in V0.3.5.

Here are my objectives for the next 7 days :
  • Complete posing of Scene 15.
  • Write and pose scene 16.
  • At least, write Scene 17.
  • Code scene 5 and 6 before this weekend, 7 and 8, maybe 9 before next Wednesday.

Scene 13 and 14 are written, posed and mostly rendered.

I'm not completely happy with some renders (specifically close ups) where the skins of the characters don't look really good. I tried a lot of things to correct that but couldn't get any satisfying results.
I could probably solve the problem by rebuilding the skins of the characters from scratch but they'll probably wouldn't look like themselves anymore.

Scenes 13 and 14 are two versions of Cassie "love" scene. You'll have choices to make and probably consequences to face later.

I'm currently working on writing and posing scene 15, which is Eve "love" path scene. 

I'm also preparing the script of the first 14 scenes for proofreading. It should be ready by this weekend.


Day 4 content is now more than 30k words long and contains 310 renders.
For the sake of comparison, the whole 0.3.5 is 46k words.


Remains 5 scenes to be done :
  • Scene 15: Eve "love" scene.
  • Scene 16: Eve "sub" scene.
  • Scene 17: Cassie "dom" scene.
  • Scene 18 & 19: "asshole" path scenes.

Dev Update #27


Heya!

All scenes from 1 to 12 are written, posed and will be completely rendered tonight. There's a total of 262 renders for these 12 scenes.

Remains the 7 last H-scenes.
I've started writing and posing scene 13, this episode Love scene for Cassie.
Writing goes pretty fast as, to be honest, I've been thinking about those 7 scenes for a long time. Posing is a bit more complex. Intricated poses are not so easy to do.

Mid-February is already gone. That was the date I hoped to release V0.4 and, once again, it's a failure. V0.4 is bigger than V0.3, and I suspect that V0.5 will be even larger. I suppose that's to be expected from a branching story with impactful choices.

I'm learning a lot from this. I don't know what my next game will be after Summer Scent, but I'll sure aim for a more flexible narrative structure that will allow for more regular updates.
