Castlevania: Road to Belmont's Curse
4/09/2026
When we think of Castlevania, “Akumajō Dracula” for the real ones, we think old school, 2D platforming action from the golden age of video games. We also think of the decade of disrespect publisher Konami has shown the franchise.
1997’s Symphony of the Night, or Akumajō Dracula X: Gekka no Yasōkyoku, was a double-edge sword for the franchise. We don’t need to go in-depth on how revolutionary the sequel to 1993’s Rondo of Blood, aka Akumajō Dracula X: Chi no Rondo, was for the franchise. Who would’ve thought turning Nintendo’s 2D exploration platformer, Metroid, into a full-on RPG would go a long way? But it did; “Metroidvania” became the dominant style of gameplay for all future “mainline” entries in the Castlevania franchise.
Alas, the silver age of Soma, Charlotte, and Shanoa was when Castlevania was relegated to the bargain bin along with other JRPGs. If you weren’t a blockbuster AAA 3D title, you were considered irrelevant by both “gamers” and corporate executives alike. Metroid-proper would have to evolve with the times, and to say it did so in a huge way would be an understatement. 2002’s Metroid Prime, and its subsequent follow-ups, set a high bar that even Nintendo themselves would struggle to surpass in later years.
The same couldn’t be said for any of the 3D Castlevania games.
Only in recent years have the 1999 Nintendo 64 iterations - Akumajō Dracula: Mokushiroku / Apocalypse ( We refuse to call that game by either its official, or unofficial, English names), and its expanded prequel follow-up, …Mokushiroku Gaiden: Legend of Cornell / Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, been given more positive reappraisals. Even the 2008 fighting game, Castlevania Judgment, has been called “over-hated” in the years since its release.
The 3D “curse” would also befall both PlayStation 2 installments: Castlevania’s self-titled 2003 game (キャッスルヴァニア), and 2005’s Curse of Darkness (Akumajō Dracula: Yami no Juin). The video game that would be released in North America on 21 October 2003 as “Lament of Innocence” was the third in a “trilogy” of sorts that attempted to rebrand the franchise in Japan under its English title. The other two titles were released on Game Boy Advance: 2002’s Byakuya no Concerto / Harmony of Dissonance, and May 2003’s Akatsuki no Minuet / Aria of Sorrow. The original “Akumajō Dracula” name would nonetheless be restored in the franchise’s next entry, 2005's Sōgetsu no Jūjika / Dawn of Sorrow; which was both a sequel to Aria of Sorrow, and the first game to be released on Nintendo DS.
It wasn’t until 2010 when “3D-vania” finally hit pay dirt.
What was originally intended to be a completely new IP, MercurySteam’s Lords of Shadow would be repurposed into a complete reboot for the Castlevania franchise. By retiring “Metroidvania” in-favour of God of War-inspired gameplay, and giving new fans other things to sink their fangs into, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (once more released in Japan under the series’ English title) became the breakthrough Konami had been waiting for. This change-in-direction would be validated by the scores of 8’s and 7’s the game received all around from critics.
Sadly, Lord of Shadow’s success would be short-lived thanks to the poor performance of the game’s follow-ups. Both 2013’s old-school-inspired Mirror of Fate [Sadame no Makyō], and 2014’s open-world-based Lords of Shadow 2 were unable to impress critics. The shifts in narrative direction, gameplay style, and visuals were noted criticisms. Symphony of the Night was indeed a double-edge sword in retrospective. If you weren’t part of the vocal minority who just wanted another “Metroidvania”, you questioned if Konami had lost sight of what made Castlevania special to begin with.
After 25 February 2014, Dracula’s coffin was sealed away from the AAA gaming world for over a decade.
“You Don’t Belong in This World”
On top of becoming a scapegoat for the franchise’s perceived downfall, the failure of Lords of Shadows 2 may have contributed to Konami’s disillusionment of AAA video game development; as the once-beloved and respected publisher would conjure an endless hurricane of controversies in the decade that followed. For the blissfully ignorant who don’t know what we're talking about, feel free to look up P.T, and Kojima Productions.
2015 was one hell of a year. We digress.
The most relevant controversy to our story was a 5-part interview by Nikkei Trendy Net with then-Konami President Hideki Hayakawa published on 14 May 2015. It was misinterpreted by some "intellectually-challenged" NeoGAF users as “AAA video games suck! Mobile games are where the money is!” Polygon also got their hands on the interview, fortunately for us, but the quotes they selected didn’t make the optics look any better.
You only wish the “Erotic Violence” seen in the trailers and cutscenes for the "CR Pachinko Akumajō Dracula" slot machine released that same year was from an actual Castlevania video game. Sadly, outside 2019‘s "Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls" (originally released for mobile devices, of course), Konami has published no such thing to this very day.
Frederator Studios’ game-changing (pun intended) animated adaptations for Netflix have been the most notable activity the franchise as a whole has seen in recent years.
Konami’s loss of respect would be a gain for independent video game developers, as popular demand saw “Metroidvania” become a genre in of itself. The latter half of the 2010s would see a rise in "Symphony of the Night"-inspired RPGs, from "Shovel Knight" to "Hollow Knight".
In the same year of the P.T, Kojima, and “Mobile games are the future” scandals, "Symphony of the Night" writer and programmer turned (ex)Castlevania series producer Koji Igarashi would launch the kickstarter for "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night". You already know how that turned out: five years later, Bloodstained has become a franchise 3 games strong.
As for Metroid-proper, both 2010’s "Metroid: Other M" and 2016’s "Metroid Prime: Federation Force" would receive mixed-to-negative reactions from the English-speaking world. To put this in further context: these games were the only new entries in the series since "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption" in 2007; a near-decade long stretch.
Ironically enough, it would be the same studio that briefly resuscitated the Castlevania franchise whom would do the same for Metroid. Nintendo brought in none other than MercurySteam to develop a remake of 1991's "Metroid II: Return of Samus" on Game Boy. The symbolically-titled "Metroid: Samus Returns" was released in 2017 for Nintendo 3DS and was hailed as a welcome return-to-form. Impressed by the studio’s work, Nintendo would give MercurySteam the unenviable task of developing the long-overdue Metroid 5.
Much like "Sonic the Hedgehog", there have been too many failures to warrant another attempt at a 3D action game; but it would also be redundant for Castlevania to take the IGAVANIA route given that there are already so many other games in that style. We also feel that the original timeline has ran its course.
Our proposal: old-school, classic, side-scrolling gameplay set in an "Ultimate" universe that cherry-picks the best elements from the offical timeline and some non-canon games. Imagine "Harmony of Despair" and "Grimoire of Souls" if the story didn't take place inside a book; and its gameplay was based on the 1991 SFC/SNES remake released outside Japan as "Super Castlevania IV".
