A brief History of Linden Lab's Second Life from a first hand account.
Second Life was launched by Linden Lab, an American software company, and was opened to the public in late 2004 at a time before cell phones and just when the internet was becoming widely used. I joined as Linden Lab's resident Quark Yifu in 2007.
When Linden Labs “Second Life” virtual world first opened it was beautiful. It started out as an empty grid and everything in the whole world was made by someone in Second Life.
Everything in the whole world made with only the modeling tools and programming features that were available in Second life at that time and you could click on anything in the world and see who made it, how many prims it was, what scripts were in it, everything.
You got a free 512X512 meter plot of land that was big enough for a house and yard and you could control the access to it, the music in, the permissions for it and time of day in your own little piece of free land that you got when you signed up for Second Life.
I joined in Second Life in 2007. Back then you couldn't just type in a user name you had to choose a first name from the list of available first names and then a last name from the available last names.
I chose the first name Quark because I thought it was an obscure word and therefore be a unique name that no one else would have. I didn't know at the time that there was a popular Star Trek character named Quark and a lot of people had that name.
For my last name I wanted something short because you had to type it in every time I logged on so I choose the shortest last name I could find, Yifu. That's how I got the Quark Yifu pen name that I still use today for my erotic story writing.
Second life was just wonderful back then. Everyone on there was smart and computer savvy. You had to be just to figure out how to move around and things like that in the world. And there was a currency called a “Linden” dollar that you could trade back and forth for real money.
The key thing about Second Life was that everyone was really open and honest because there was no reason to lie about anything. You could say or do anything you wanted there anonymously and there no social consequences. There was no way for anyone to know who you were in the real world unless you told them.
There were so many people there that you could meet and talk to! A gigantic whole new social world with all kinds of sub cultures. It wasn't like real life where you have to travel around to a bar or something and maybe met a few people. You could meet twenty or thirty people every day on Second Life if you wanted to. There was always at least 25 thousand other people on every time you logged in back then.
Everyone would talk openly about everything with no filters. Sex was always a common topic. Most people would put their sexual preferences in their profile and you could click on them to read their profile and decide if you want to talk to them or not. People would talk openly about their sexual fetishes.
I never knew there were so many fetishes or that they were so common! Particularly the Dominate and submissive thing that I had been so completely oblivious to for my whole life up until that point. Looking back I feel so stupid that I didn't figure that one out by myself before I saw it displayed so openly on Second Life. it was so Obvious in the real world once you're aware of it. Everyone has a dominate or submissive general nature.
On one end of the spectrum there are people that really want to be in charge and then there are people who don't really like making decisions and don't want to be bothered with it.
It was common to see someone wearing a collar that had their master's name on and there were tons of places to go where you could role play as slave and master with a bunch of other people.
People would have CyberSex by writing seductive lines to each other and creating a progressive story line as they did it. Two girls making out for example, might go something like this.
Amanda would write
“A gentle breeze chills the room, Amanda *Snuggles* closer to Samantha.”
And Samantha would answer,
“Samantha +Blushes+ and brushes Amanda's hair aside and softly *kisses* her cheek. She relaxes and rests her head against Amanda's with a heavy *sigh*. It feels so good to be so close to the girl of her dreams.”
Cybersex was a new way to get intimate with someone.. It was symbolic.
All these role playing things took effort and people could tell how much you liked them by how much effort you put into playing with them.
Back then I was much closer to all my friends on second life that I was to anyone in the real world and I had friends from all over the world. All my friends would rush home after work every day and get on Second Life just like I did.
I learned so much so fast about creating stuff from Second Life that I soon realized that I could actually create anything I wanted.
Every one on second life used open source tools and I soon got to know which popular free programs did what and how much you could do with them. I quickly got good at making stuff that other people wanted.
I made hundreds of Avatar skins, clothes and programable gadgets and put them up for sale for a few linden dollars on the Second life Marketplace. All the work I did on all that stuff I made back then stayed done and I still make a about $11 a month or so from the the Second Life skins, clothes and novelty items that I made and put up for sale on the Second Life marketplace more than ten years ago.
It's hard to describe the impact that Second Life back then before Second Life got super popular and Linden Labs had to put in all kinds of restrictions on everything.
Gambling was banned and there were new rules about political correctness and someone had to decide what was and wasn't politically correct. New rules about copyright infringement meant that You could no longer have a “Diet Coke” can in your set if it had the coke logo on it.
Second Life was a completely different thing after that.
Anyways, Second Life is still around and it's still cool and it's still packed full of beautifully made Simulated city and roll play sets. It literally has an endless supply of beautifully made sets and there are so many that you'll never have time to see it all.
