Culture Log 01 - Who is Julia Stewart?
Good evening, passengers of Flight 172!
It has been a hot minute since our last Culture Log, so let's dive right in! Before we get into the nitty-gritty of who Julia Stewart is, let's take a quick look back at our previous character deep-dives for Alyssa (and Zero), Celeste, Charity, and Grace.
The Theme: Emotional Maturity
As I have driven home before, and will continue to emphasize, every Culture Log explores a different facet of the human condition:
• Alyssa and Zero explore the struggle of accepting oneself, flaws and all.
• Celeste explores guilt and grief from afar.
• Charity explores the fragile path toward healing after loss.
• Grace examines humanity's fierce perseverance in embracing and overcoming disabilities.
While I don't want to bang the same drum over and over, you will definitely notice similar narrative threads weaving throughout all the girls' routes. This shared resonance is entirely intentional, as it serves as one of the core pillars of Flight 172.
Who Is Julia Stewart?
Age: 27 years old
Eye Color: Sectoral Heterochromia
Theme Song: Rusty Nails and Butterflies
Julia Stewart is the youngest of four children and the only daughter born to Rebecca and Austin Stewart. While her mother initially envisioned a future filled with dress-up, tea parties, and playing house, Julia preferred roughing it outside with her three older brothers. Her childhood became a routine of cuts, bruises, and urgent care visits until high school, when she traded tiaras for batting helmets and found her true passion: fastpitch softball.
She wasn’t just good at the sport; she was exceptional. Julia earned a full ride to Cinder Tree University, dominated the collegiate scene as the nation's top catcher, and became a household name after leading the Emberhawks to a Women’s College World Series victory. After graduation, she channeled that fierce competitive drive into the Business Intelligence sector. She joined SmartWorks Incorporated as a QA Engineer, quickly climbed the corporate ladder, and now serves as the Head Quality Assurance Liaison, seamlessly bridging the gap between customers and the development team.
How Does Julia Fit into the Story?
When building the cast for Flight 172, physical diversity was only the baseline; we have short and tall girls, skinny and thick girls, blondes, brunettes, gingers, and raven haired. True diversity means varying the actual game mechanics for each character. We've already discussed how Zero's opinion of Xander dynamically alters Alyssa's route, but Julia introduces an entirely different spin.
Julia is a competitor to her core. Everything is a contest. If Xander and Julia were both hooked up to heart monitors, she would genuinely try to compete for the lower resting heart rate. While brainstorming how to properly capture this intense energy within the narrative, the perfect solution hit me: Quick Time Events (QTEs) and Mini-Games.
Julia's route will be heavily influenced by these interactive moments. She will literally compete with the reader. Depending on whether she wins or Xander wins, her reactions, behaviors, and the story itself will change.
Now, let's pump the brakes for a second, because I know a lot of readers actively dislike QTEs and mini-games. Rest assured, all QTEs and mini-games are completely optional and can be toggled off. If you choose to turn them off, you will simply be treated to the canonical result of each event (some will be wins, others will be losses) so you can enjoy the story stress-free.
For those who do play them, my approach might be a bit different than what you're used to. I am treating these events not as 'success or failure' barriers, but as branching choices. When it comes to Julia, there are no wrong options or game-over screens; losing to her will be just as narrative-rich and rewarding as winning against her. I should add a quick caveat here: while the wider game does feature some high-stakes QTEs with life-threatening consequences, those are completely separate from Julia's relationship-based mechanics.
I have some incredibly unique ideas in store for Julia and Xander, and I can't wait for you to experience them.
Until next time!
Safe Travels, Grizzlebubs
