You will be able to read weekly updates I make about what I have been working on (which dev and game, events for which characters in those games, how many words per game and/or character I proofread, etc.). When possible, this will include one or more screenshots of short snippets that show some marked-up text. These snippets will lack greater context, have character names, etc., redacted, be approved be related devs, and never contain any major spoilers.

Features

  • The general idea is that I will help devs either improve their English language accuracy or save time in their development process by proofreading and, if they want it, editing their work before release.
  • In addition to a higher quality reading experience, players who aren't able to support the devs directly can support me for a very basic monthly cost to get access to the public-release versions of everything I proofread asap. I will be asking devs to password protect their public release, and the passwords will initially be posted here behind my most basic level of subscription. These passwords will then be released to the general public two weeks later.
  • Your direct support makes it easier for me to keep the costs I charge to devs low, and as your support increases, I can even lower their costs further.

Who I am and what I'm planning

Hi,

I'm Lost Lupus, a freelance proofreader and editor looking to help independent creators save time in their own development process and/or polish up the quality of their written English.

My primary target clientele are game devs of 18+ visual novels, who likely post their content on this platform. That said, if other written content creators become aware of me, I'd also be happy to discuss with you the possibility of proofreading your work if you are interested (assuming that this happens while I still have enough time to take on new clients).

The idea is to try to help keep the cost to devs low by also receiving direct funding from the devs' fans. I will be initially lowballing my rates to devs to drum up some interest, so the initial rate will be $10/1,000 words, which is at the very low end of what professional proofreaders will charge for their work. This rate will remain in effect until the end of the 2026 calendar year, when it will be reassessed based on total direct fan contributions (similar reassessment will also take place every quarter thereafter). If fan support is below certain thresholds, then I may unfortunately have to raise this rate. This will partly be to reflect the likelihood that my proofreading help is (hopefully) turning into increased funding direct to the dev, meaning that they could afford the higher rates in this circumstance. However, as fan funding direct to me increases beyond higher thresholds, devs will be offered even further discounted rates.

So, by supporting me directly, you'll not only be engaging in fan-funded improvements to all games that I proofread, you'll also be helping keep the cost of this service to devs as low as I reasonably can.

As an added incentive to get as many of you as possible to give me a very small amount every month, I will also be asking the devs who I proofread for to post their free/public releases with password protection. For the first two weeks after release, the passwords for these files will be made available on my crowdfunding platforms behind a $1 subscription tier (I am new to this, so depending on transaction fees I may need to raise my tier costs, but this is my initial concept). I will post these passwords at the time of each client's public release, or slightly beforehand depending on time zone differences. Two weeks after the update's release, I will make the passwords available to the completely-free-to-play public. I will never ask any devs to permanently lock my proofreading aid behind a paywall. Rather, when fan funding passes certain thresholds, I will reduce the delay in public release of the passwords and, at a higher threshold, eliminate it entirely.

This means that, for example, if a year from now I have 12 clients, of whom you are a player/reader of 7 of their games/VNs, then for $1 a month you'd have immediate access to the passwords for all public releases from those 7 devs you are a fan of (and the other 5 if you decided to give their works a shot too). Not to mention that you'd be helping fund the improvement of the written quality of all their games, shorten their dev cycle, and minimize their direct proofreading expenses.

Basically, I want to help existing creators improve the quality of their work and I'm requesting your support to help me make that possible and keep the expenses to devs low.

Goals

$0.00 of $500
per month
My initial proofreading rate to devs will be $10/1000 words until the end of the 2026 calendar year. If after this point the total monthly fan-funded income remains below this amount, I will need to raise my rate to devs to $20/1,000 words. If this goal is met but the next is not, then the rate will be $15/1,000. Dev rates will then be reassessed quarterly based on the average monthly fan-funding from the previous quarter and will apply to the following quarter. Depending on consultations with devs and how the time before this deadline plays out, these goals may be reassessed.
$0.00 of $1,000
per month
At this level, direct fan funding is significant enough to cover the bulk of my monthly expenditure. This means that I can keep the rates that I charge to devs at my initial price of $10/1,000 words, as the combined income will be enough for a reasonably comfortable living.
$0.00 of $1,500
per month
Direct fan funding is now covering all of my monthly expenditure, and I can afford to offer the devs a new, reduced rate of $9/1,000 words.
$0.00 of $2,000
per month
At this level, the devs will enjoy a further reduced rate of $8/1,000 words. Also, your contributions are high enough that for the following quarter the delay before the passwords will be released to the completely-free-to-play public will be reduced to one week.
$0.00 of $2,500
per month
At this level, the devs will enjoy a rate of $7/1,000 words.
$0.00 of $3,000
per month
At this level, the devs will enjoy a rate of $6/1,000 words. Also, your contributions are so high that for the following quarter, the is no need for a delay and password protection on the proofread-public version. This means that devs will be able to release the proofread public version to the entire public without any paywall delay.
$0.00 of $4,000
per month
This is the final goal. At this level, the devs will enjoy a rate of $5/1,000 words. I am keeping this minimum mainly to make some devs a little hesitant. I wouldn’t want every dev under the sun thinking that I have an infinite amount of time to be able to serve every single one of them completely free-of-charge just because fans are contributing so much to me directly.
