Edging Space Publishing - what it's all about...

Hi, and welcome to my newborn SubscribeStar account.

You are very likely here because you're a fan of my Tumblr - female-orgasm-denial.tumblr.com
Somehow a blog that I started up for a bit of fun, in a niche I had no idea many would have been interested in, turned into a Google topping, million-plus visitor monster. A monster that Tumblr have tried to kill a few times but that's a whole other story.

This... SubStar… Let’s shorten it to that ( I mean 'sub' is always good). This SubStar is to support the writing and publishing of short stories, novellas, guides, audiobooks, and who knows what else, all around that theme close to our heart: tease, edging and orgasm denial.

I wrestled with the idea of setting this up at all, because I do feel a little odd charging money for what I have been doing for free on Tumblr and BDSMLR (and will continue to do), but two things swayed me.

Firstly, because when I asked, a whole bunch of you said you’d be interested in doing this (thank you so much for that vote of confidence).

And secondly, because I believe what I'm doing here is something genuinely new. This is about published books, getting orgasm denial focused erotica into the mainstream. Good writing, to be sold on Amazon, or Smashwords, or if it's really kinky, just accessible to you, my horny little SubStars.

And it's not just a pipedream. I've actually gone and done it. I'm on the verge of launching my first FOUR BOOKS. Yeah, read that and weep GRR Martin. I actually finished the bulk of three of them about ten months ago, but you know what I learnt?

There's a WHOLE world of difference between writing a book and publishing one!

The last year has been such a journey. The writing part was actually pretty easy. Learning how to turn that into something good, something pant-wettingly hot, and publishable is the real challenge; to create the right covers for it, format it, market it, publicise, distribute, get it onto Amazon. It's been a learning curve.

This is just the start of that journey, and your chance to travel it with me. I'm excited about the potential for this. Amazingly, so is my wife, who inspired and encouraged me to get off my arse and actually do this. So I'm very keen to turn it into a success.

Whether it's just wanting to support me a little, and get early and sometimes exclusive access to my short stories, or you're a budding writer too and want to team up with me to get access to all I'm learning and doing while making the transition from writer to author, then this is for you.

My goal is to share this amazing journey with you and get your precious input and encouragement as I strive to make the hottest stories I possibly can.

Fan Club Tier

I’ve drafted out what I felt was three good tiers. As you can see above (and in the video) the Fan Club tier is for those of you who just want to show a bit of support and get early access to my regular short stories and also captions and edging instructions and similar.

The fact that SubscribeStar.adult is a genuinely pro-NSFW platform also means, if you want me to, I can venture out into some edgier denial stories - what I’m calling my ‘Hard Edge’ series. I’m really going to be led by subscribers on that - but dubcon, consensual non-con, some depraved medical stuff, and who knows what else is the kind of thing that I could try out there. Maybe some fucked up misogynistic stuff that is just so wrong, or I know breast size teasing has been a favourite the few times I featured it on the blog. We’re all adults here and understand that fantasies, and what turns us on, are not what we want, or even hot in reality. Some of those things may not be for you, and that’s okay. Everything will be very clearly tagged. But I want to make this a safe place for all kinds of denial fantasies to be explored, led by you.

Book Club Tier

The Book Club tier is where you start getting more influence. I’ll be putting votes out for what books you want to be prioritised, maybe give options as stories develop to let you decide which way they go. Yes, I’m basically your bitch. A little bit of switching’s good for the soul. More importantly, you’ll have access to my full books as I write them. You’re free to just get off to them but like any book club, your feedback would be awesome. You'll also get proper ebooks of Advanced Reader Copies, delivered via the Bookfunnel service.

What you won’t be getting is copies of my back catalogue. This is because when I put my books up onto Amazon the contract with them is they aren’t available anywhere else. They are pretty merciless at removing accounts who mess around on this, so I won't be. I’ve had quite enough of that with Tumblr.

The point is, for advance reader copies, grab ‘em while they’re hot. They’ll only be there until it’s published on Amazon. So the ‘Advanced’ part is very literal.

Finally, if you’re formative in an idea for a book you’ll get acknowledged in it, and I thought it might be cute to offer the chance for some to get featured as characters. Your name, or a name you pick, and your general description. Imagine thousands of others getting off imaging all those wicked things being done to you. Hot right?

Writers’ Club Tier

Thirdly, there’s the Writers’ Club tier. I’ve been on quite the journey learning the publishing side of writing over the last 12 months. I’d love to share what I’ve learnt and the resources I’ve built up with other aspiring erotica authors. And I’m serious about the author part. This is for people who are wanting to publish and sell their erotica. It’s not just for people wanting cosy feedback on their little stories. I’m charging $25 for that because it’s an investment in actually helping each other make money from what we’re writing.
You get access to an exclusive Discord where I and other authors will be sharing our experiences, struggles, tactics and confidential ideas. I’ve got others helping me with editing and design who’ll also be part of it. If you don’t know if this is for you, please message me first and we can chat it through. Places are limited for obvious reasons.

As you can see, I’ve made as many of the initial posts public so you can have an idea of the kind of content I’ll be producing. But that is also very much up for discussion. Whatever tier you’re in I’d love to hear what kind of content you would like to see here.

This is early days, so if you have ideas for tiers, or content within them, message me here or email [email protected]

Ready, steady, write.

James

Can you tell a book by its cover?

When you start writing books everything is about the story, the plot, the writing process. But as you get to the end of that process you realise there's quite a lot more to getting a book published than just words on a page.

I've discovered two great resources in exploring this business side to publishing a book. The first is a podcast, the Self Publishing Show which is consistently full of high-value information and totally inspiring too.

The other resource is on Reddit, the EroticaAuthors Subreddit. The erotica market is huge, and the guys there are sharing their expertise and stories of success and failure. I've been devouring it for the last couple of months and I highly recommend checking it out if you're thinking of writing romance or erotica.

Anyway, one of the things highlighted in both those places is how important a good cover is.

On the whole, the recommendation is to look similar to the genre you're writing in.

I thought I'd ignore that.

Listen to my reasoning, because I really want your opinions on this.  Erotica covers seem to fall into three categories.

First, there's the cheesy, scantily clad guy or girl or some combination:

I mean, I'm in
No, this isn't a joke, this is in the TOP 30 of Amazon's UK erotica bestsellers. And okay, I get the reasoning, you're horny, So a hot girl or guy draws you in. I can see this working best with erotica targetted at guys. So why the fact it's on Daddy Erotica I don't know.

Secondly, you get classy, really well-designed covers like this:

Now that's great (and is top ten in the erotica charts at the moment) and if I'm writing erotic romance it's the direction I'd be tempted to go. But the 'edging erotica' I'm working on at the moment is definitely not romance.  It's kinky shit designed to get you off (well, maybe not all the way...) so I'll save this look for other stuff.

So last of all is the symbolic cover. think the 50 Shades ties or top seller Sylvia Day's stuff that all involves shoes or jewellery:

Again these are cool, and from a design perspective, really easy. Get some cheap royalty-free stock images, apparently, pair it with Arial font apparently and boom, you're set.

I like the fact you can get all metaphorical with images. But it's still very romance oriented, just romance with some good hard action.

I want something different.

The reason for that is I do feel like we're doing something at least a bit unusual here. There's very little orgasm denial erotica out there, and most of it is male orgasm denial.
Plus, if you've read my blog or my captions you know I like to bring a bit of fun to proceedings. So maybe it's a bit presumptuous but I started looking for an approach that was a bit different. Sexy in its own way, but definitely distinctive.

So this is what I've come up with.  I'd love to know your thoughts.

I've taken a pop art style as the inspiration for them. I liked the images, most of the ones I've found are by a talented Russian artist who goes by the name of StudioKS and had a load of them in my go-to Photo Stock Library.

But I also like the fact there's something of the pulp fiction feel about them. Before the movie of the same name pulp fiction was a trend in books as printing became cheaper in the 20th Century. Detective novels, sci-fi, they used to be churned out by the tonne and printed on really cheap recycled, 'pulp' paper.

As you'll see in a previous post, my plan for writing edging erotica is going to be similar. Quantity, quantity, quantity. That's because while I am keen for them to be quality too, my belief is that rather than trying to make one, perfect novel, I'm going to churn out as many stories as I can for you to enjoy, and in the process of writing, and your feedback and input, get better, and better

It also fixes a major issue for erotica covers, which is most Stock Image libraries do not get model releases that explicitly say the images can be used for erotica, so the terms are that

Also, I know that some don't like actual people on the covers as they prefer to create a picture of the characters themselves. I'm hoping using illustrations gives a nice middle ground between being personable but not feeling limited by what you see on the cover.

Most of all though, they're distinctive, and I love that.

What do you think, should I just be boring and go with a nice pair of tits, or am I onto something here? Would you stop and have a look?

Quantity leads to Quality - A Writing Lesson from a Pottery Class

I've mentioned elsewhere how useful the EroticaAuthor's Subreddit has been in quickly getting me up to speed with the ins and outs (and ins and outs and, oh god, in, in, in's) of erotica writing.

One of the most powerful posts there was another writer pointing me to a story, a story about not books, or writing, but making pots.

It's a story from the book Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. It's what I think is a profound insight into a route to getting good at something creative:

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality.
His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pound of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot – albeit a perfect one – to get an “A”.
Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes – the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.
Isn't that amazing. And so applicable to writing. It's easy to just get stuck going over and over trying to make something perfect, and I've already seen that trap looming as I've started writng material for you lot. But right here and now I'm opting to take this path, to deliver lots, and lots of content, most of which I think will be great, but almost certainly could be improved in some way. And through your involvement, increase the quality as we go. I'm pretty confident that I have a good baseline. As a supporter, you'll be able to see too, but I've already had feedback from a lovely group of 'alpha' readers who really know what they are talking about, and have encouraged me that what I'm writing is definitely good enough for a wider audience.
But I'm also not 'precious' about what I'm writing either. There's a lot of mystique built up around the writing process but my plan is to get it all out in the open. I want your input as we take this journey together - on the writing, which stories you want, what you think of the covers, the concepts, the output.

I'm going to make a lot of pots, some will be great, some might break, some may only be good for pissing in (and some of you might even like that). But I believe, as write, they're going to get better and better, with your help.
So thank you for your support, thank you for believing in this idea, and getting behind me. I'm excited about the journey and having you with me on it.

Edging Space gets some branding

The Edging Space domain has been something I've been using on and off for a couple of years now as a way to start being less dependent on my original Tumblr domain, female-orgasm-denial.tumblr.com.

That's always been quite a mouthful and actually a lot of guys follow the blog too, so I liked the move to something more generic.

Now that the books are nearly ready I thought I needed to  put some more effort into the branding of all this. I'm not a designer, although I do have some basic skills (as you'll hopefully see in the posts about cover designs.

My lovely friend Lizzie, who's a typography wizard, pointed me in the direction of this fabulous font RainLoveScript which is available free from fontbundles.net.

I didn't just want it as a nice script though. The best logos have at least a bit of customisation in the typography (this is for practical reasons too, it's easier to protect as a trademark if you're a big business).

I tried a few things underneath it, mostly feminine curves, but nothing really worked. Then I sat back and looked at the shapes of the letters. 'Hmm, that S kind of looks like the hole made when you cut a pair of pantyhose open' my twisted mind came up with.

So I opened it up in Illustrator (my least favourite graphics program) and just about figured out how to add a 'slit'. I threw the output at Lizzie, mostly as a joke and she was supportive as ever...

Then, as irrefutable proof of the concept of simultaneous invention, I thought, 'A drip on that would be very appropriate and had just put it in place as she messaged, ' you could’ve gone for a 💧 on the p’s descender'

GMTA am I right?

A dripping pussy needed a matching dripping cock, so after a few tries the first E got the dong treatment. I know it's slightly infantile, but it's still making me chuckle half a day in and if we can't have fun with this shit we're doing it wrong.
Colour choices went from red (the drips made it look like a Period blog) to purple, and then finally to gold, because we're classy like that!

So there we have it, a new Edging Space Logo.

I've made a few variations:
The basic logo

A short version for use on things like avatars and website icons

And then my favourite, a 'sub-brand' (pun unintended). The trick with sub-brands is take the normal logo and stick a contrasting font next to it. This is for the publishing side of what I'm doing.

They say it's all about the details. Check out the 'l' in publishing... I'm unreasonably proud of that.

So there you go, getting my ducks in a row. I hope it's interesting. As well as my writing and tasks I plan to use this to explain some of the other things that I've been doing that go into getting my books created and online. I'll be sharing my cover concepts with you in an upcoming post and talk you through the process I've gone through to get those too.

I'm really keen to get your feedback on those, and this of course.

What do you think, do you like the design. Is the cock too much, or did it make you laugh?
And of course the biggie. Cut or uncut?

Why SubscribeStar and not Patreon?

I thought it was worth saying why I'm using this service and not their very well known competitor.

It's been a real dilemma for me as I spent a while setting up a Patreon account last year and was all ready to hit the go-live button, but a few things happened to stop me doing that.

Firstly, reports started to pour in of adult content creators getting their accounts banned by Patreon, usually without warning. A quick Google shows a worrying number of verifiable examples of this. And while a lot of it can be blamed on prissy payment providers, the way Patreon handled it was just not cool. For many working hard to create hot, adult content, their entire livelihood was wiped out in one go, no appeal.

Remind anyone of our favourite blog site?

Yep, the Tumblr pain was too fresh and still is, to put myself at that risk again.

In comparison, SubscribeStar have a really positive attitude to adult content, and it feels like a much safer place to be building a following of this type.

Just for extra brownie points, SubscribeStar 18+ content specifically comes with the .adult third-level domain which is great because that gets blocked automatically on all internet family filters. Belt and braces, nice work SS.

Secondly, Patreon's payment model is kind of weird. The fact they still only gather money from subscribers at the first of the month left me with the dilemma of what to do for those who want to sign up, say a week before that. Do I charge them a whole month for a week's access, or give it to them for free until the month rolls over and so leave it all available without an effective paywall. Again, in comparison SS take payment when you sign up, and repeat that a month later. Seemingly an obvious solution, unless you're Patreon...

Finally, Patreon is hacked. Like really hacked. I won't put the links up but there are a number of sites where you can just go and type in the Patreon name and boom, there's all their content free to download. Patreon are absolutely aware of this and don't seem to care. That's a problem for me for a couple of reasons. Firstly it's not great to have things you work hard on just ripped off and you can't do anything about it, although honestly if people want my content and can't pay, I'm not too bothered. They weren't going to pay anyway.
Secondly, a major worry is that it totally removes the intrinsic age filter that a paid account provides. I have kids, do I want them getting hold of the kinky shit I write? Hell no. And I don't want anybody else's kids to either.

So yes, three good reasons I'm doing this with SubscribeStar. I know most of us may have a Patreon account already so thanks for taking the extra step of trying something new. I am too, and I hope it'll work for all of us.

James
