-0.4- Progress Report 90% + Extras Included


Here it is, the last Progress Report of 0.4.
And then, the update should be complete.

I wanted to make this one, just to keep everyone posted on it's progress before the release.

I'll also divulge into a little bit about why it's taking me so long to get this update out the door.

Writing
The writing for both character's routes is done.
And in total, the word count comes to over 21,000 words for this update.

That said, it seems Sachie's episode will be longer than Sanae's.
With her episode alone having the longest word count.

I'd say the writing for this episode has been the easiest part of working on it.
Maybe I got a bit stumped on certain moments, but it was quick to overcome.

That said, it did begin to feel at points that the writing would never end.
I guess that's when I should have realized it was getting too long.

The Hold Up
Now here comes the hard part.

The truth is, 0.4 from a development standpoint is a rather unconventional update.

Admittedly I was aiming for an October release, all the way up to the last week.

But you know, I just kept adding onto the workload with my ideas.
A more obvious one being with the amount of rendered scenes that's being made for this update.

As I'm really trying to outdo myself with not just the amount of rendered events I can pull off, but also the kind of scenes I can create.
So the moments will feel more 'eventful', especially in their variety.

And I've also made a special conversational event with one of the heroines for the first time.
It somewhat acts as a mini-game, to gain affection points, whilst learning a little more about her in the process.

And I probably shouldn't be saying this, but another reason why the update has taken so long.
Is because I've been modding a custom map into KK for the first time, and...it required a lot of work to pull this off.

Perhaps I'll share a dev-log on that if anyone's interested.

Conclusion
Sadly all this means there was no October release.
I know that's unfortunate, but I hope the extra time will make for a better release.

Might be quite a bummer, if you were hoping to play it this October.
And I do apologize for that.

If anything, I believe this has taught me that I'll need to change how I'll make updates in the future.
As I don't like making you wait very long between each episode.

But I shall talk more on that plan, after I've finished 0.4 for you first.
As that's my no.1 priority right now.

And I'm so close to finishing this update.

To my patient backers, your support has motivated me to push on through the difficulties of development.

-0.4- Progress Report 70%


Unlike my diary approach for most of the dev-logs of 0.4 so far.
This will be a more detailed report going over the progress of every aspect of 0.4's current state for my Backers & Followers.

Let's get right down to business.

Writing
The scripts of 0.4 are very close to being finished.
They just need a bit more work to tie them all up, then they should be done.

But what happens in the episode, all of it's events have been outlined.

Art
I would say a lot of the scene blockouts have been done, and implemented into the game itself.
Though some scenes are still in the process of being blocked out.

On top of that, I've added some new ones to episode 1.
As looking back, I do feel that episode suffers the most from a lack of rendered events.

With the new scenes, this update will be featuring new backgrounds as well.

As mentioned in a previous dev-log, the variety of rendered scenes in this update is intended to be a lot more than the usual.

I'd like to also mention something about the credits screen that plays at the end of each update.

When you reach the current end of a heroine's update in 0.4, it should play out a unique animation depending on who's route you're currently playing.
As you watch the credits scroll.

I know that's not a big deal, but it's something neat that I thought I would share with you.
(I've done Sachie's, now I just need to include Sanae's...)

Programming
As for this update's programming work.

It's a lot more straight forward than the last update (0.3).
As I'm not trying to figure out how the routes' system will work, and what flags need to be remembered.

I've got the formula down now.

That said, there are some new things I'm doing for this update programming wise.

One of them, is a conversation event.
Where you're chatting with the heroine, and provided with many different dialogue choices.

Compared to the usual where you pick one choice, and the game continues.
This one loops back to the choices, until a certain condition is fulfilled.

Nothing too extravagant, but just thought I'd share that with you.

Goals (Release Window?)
The current goal of 0.4, is to do what 0.3 did, but better.
Take what I've learned from working on 0.3, and create something better.

As for when I hope to release this new update?
The current release goal is to release this October, which has now become this month.

And on top of trying to release the update this month, I'd like to release something else...
But it's too soon to talk on that.

Hopefully I'll be on time for Halloween, as I'd like to do something for this holiday. 🎃

Conclusion
I'm going to be very busy this month, probably pulling all-nighters to get this update done (RIP my sleep schedule).

I'd say it's getting close to completion, for me to confidently claim that it should be done by this month.

But man...that remaining 30% is going to be one hell of a push.

-0.4- Development Log (27/09/2024): Up To The Challenge


Hey, Winter here.
I just want to talk with you about where 0.4's currently at.
As well as the challenges being tackled.

I'll also be sharing a new render.

Start
As of today, a lot of progress has been made on 0.4.
Some things that I can't talk too much about yet, as it's not the right time.

But let's just say I've managed to pull something off, that's been eating away at me for a while now.
That I believe will be a game changer, for how I create the scenes.

That said, 0.4 still has a lot of work ahead of itself.

If I had to describe to you the current challenges I'm facing.
It would be a mixture of the new stuff I'm doing for the first time, and the quantity of event renders being made for this update.

Thankfully, it's going relatively smoothly right now.
And I'm not hitting too many brick walls.

But there was one aspect that ate up a lot of the development time.
As it required a ton of patience, through trial & error to pull off.
(Again, I have to be vague with you as I can't reveal what this is about just yet...)

I think it will be worth it in the long run though.

But yes...the quantity of event renders.
Taking what I've learned from 0.3, I believe I can now pull off more event renders than before.

And now I wanna put this to the test.

For the older fans that played the first two updates (0.1, and 0.2).

You may remember just how little event renders there were for the episodes (especially 0.1).
As I mostly opted to save the unique renders for the ero-scenes, and maybe a special event in ep.2.

Whilst 90% of the visuals were the familiar background & sprites combo.

Playing through the older episodes again, my mind started retroactively wondering what would've been a good render for certain moments.



I think with 0.3, I started moving towards this vision.
But it still wasn't quite there, as I was stretched a little thin working on 4 animated ero-scenes for the first time (so that had to take priority).

Now that I'm going ahead with this, I feel this weird sense of power at my fingertips that I didn't have before.

Previous constraints are disappearing, as I develop smarter & faster.

But the thing about power is, it's a double edged sword.

You can wield it to accomplish greatness, and you can use it to your ruin.

What am I saying?
I'm saying...I feel I need to be careful not to get carried away with making too many renders.
As it can backfire.

So I'll only create unique event renders, where I see there's potential in it.
Hopefully ensuring quality over quantity, with a fair bit in quantity.

So I'd say the new approach maybe involves 33% unique event renders to 67% bgs & sprites usage (rough estimate).
Compared to before's 10% : 90%

Don't want to overestimate this, but that's how it's currently looking for us.

The Challenge
The biggest challenge I find right now, is honestly time related.

You know, I never realized how finite time was as a resource until now.

Whether it's me working on the update whilst it's daytime outside, and then realizing it's suddenly past midnight.

Or when I have to pick between working on the game, and doing another thing in my life.
Sometimes I'll choose the game, sometimes I'll do said thing...it's a coin toss.

That said, when a release is coming up.
And I'm in the final stages of an update.

I'll usually lock myself in, and disregard the other stuff to finish the update.

To try help with this, I've started scheduling when tasks need to be done by.
As a way to keep me on track, and not to get lost in the creative process.

It makes development a little more fun for me, setting challenges for myself to beat (a bit like getting a best score in a game).

That said, I've come to realize I'm not the most organized person I know.

I have plans, but sometimes I get bored with the plan.
And go a completely different route.

I'm not sure if that's a strength or a weakness, but it's something you'll likely start noticing in my output.

Like 0.4 was originally intended to be a rather safe update to make after 0.3.
But I realize now that I'm actually taking some risks with it.

Guess I'm just a natural risk taker.

Might be the reason I'm one of the few Netori Developers 🤔😎

Rounding Off
So yeah, sorry that I haven't been posting as much.

I promise that I have my reasons, but still...
I should find a way to work on the game and post consistently together in tandem.

But the way that I currently am, requires me to spend some 'down' time hammering it out.

[0.3] - [0.4] Development Log (02/09/2024): Another Step Forward


Hello everybody, sorry for the silence.
As I've been quite busy.

That said, I'll also be talking about what I've been getting up to leading up to the Full Public release of 0.3.
And a little bit about 0.4, for those of you who've already played through 0.3 and have been waiting on the next update.

Finalization of -0.3-
So as you may know, 0.3 was an ambitious update.
In terms of content, scope, and scale.

Having to pull off so many new things, that I had never done before with the previous updates.
Was quite the undertaking.

But there's one thing I forgot to mention...
It was unfinished.

Which is why I have been calling them "Alpha" builds.
Not only because you're a fellow Netori Alpha, by being a member of mine ;)

But also, I just didn't consider it to be a truly finished build.

Yes, in order to get this update done, which took a very long time.
I had to make a temporary sacrifice, and remove something that I promised would be saved for later...

You may remember seeing this choice screen, with Sanae.
Whilst hiding away from her husband.
 
But you may also remember, it only had one choice to pick from instead of two...
Well now there's two!
 
So...what happens when you pick this choice...?
...let's just say you should definitely not pick this option...

But if you do, you may learn a little something interesting about the story.
And could even meet a new character...

I've said too much.
But hopefully you will check this refined build out, to see what happens in the choice's scenario.
(Though I should warn you, you may be in for a bit of a shock.)

I've also made a change to the text UI for dialogue.
Gone is the default textbox, that takes up a quarter of the screen.

And honestly, it already looks way better in my opinion.
 
Now instead of taking up a quarter of the screen (or a third if you were playing on mobile).
It's a tiny fraction of the screen, only being used for the quick menu at the bottom.

And now the dialogue text uses a black outline, almost making it look more like subtitles.

The reason chose to do this was I felt the default textbox just took up too much unnecessary screen space, especially for event scenes.
That I just decided it needed to be changed right away.

I don't hate textboxes in general, but the default renpy one really wasn't doing it for me anymore.
Tell me what you think about this change, do you like it?

Starting The Next Update -0.4-
Yes, so the next update.

Some work has already been done on the next update, and I even have some of it working inside the game itself.

I've even begun blocking out Sanae's scene for the episode.
But I'd say the script is the closest thing to being complete as of right now, as it was written well in advance.

That said, I'll probably be putting Sachie's Episode 4 through another draft.
As it was written all the way back in 2022, believe it or not.

Let's just say it no longer meets my standards.
It's normal, given the time gap.

Sanae's Episode 4 though, was written fairly recent.
And seems to be coming along quite nicely.

I won't spoil what their Episode 4's will be about.
I'll just say you will be spending more time with them, compared to the previous episodes.

-0.3- Epilogue
Going slightly off-topic.

As I was writing this Development Log, I saw this old post related to 0.3.
It was made before I had to stop the project, all the way back in 2023.

Regarding the results of a poll for my Patrons, on how an ero-scene from Sachie's episode should play out.
(A cropped example)

And after days of voting, the result...was a draw.

Well now...this matter needs to be settled somehow, I thought to myself.
Maybe I'll just post two comments with the options, and have people like those comments to see which receives the most likes.

But it seems you all had another idea...
 
 

And you know, at the time I thought "Yeah...why not? I'll give them both scenarios then."
 

And those of you who participated seemed quite happy with this outcome.
 
 

Little did I realize, what the promise I made to my audience would do to me...
 

Fast forward, I've chosen to comeback.
And I remembered that I was going to 'do both' for this Sachie event.

But when I tried putting it all together, with animations as well (which was a first for me).
Oh my god, it was a nightmare.

It was like trying to make 3 different scenes at once (Face-sitting + HJ + FJ), but they're all connected and rely upon each other to work.
I genuinely thought about going back on it, and just choosing one option and sticking with that.

But then...I remembered the promise.
And realized it wouldn't be good to go back on my word, when making my return.

I made a promise, that I had to keep now.
And so, this along with Sachie's other ero-scene of the episode required a complete overhaul to how I put the scenes together.

And in the end, I'd say it all worked out.
It was a valuable learning experience for me.
And I intend to put what I've learned from that, into the new updates going forward.

Still though, that Sachie scene took the longest to make.
And was the last scene of the update to be finished (ignoring the "I should go now" option that's only just been added).

But I guess I'm bringing this up, because it's funny to look back on.
How this one poll, would carry over a year later.
And how it all came together in the end...

So yeah, just thought I'd share that funny story about the update with you.

One more thing I'd like to say is, I'm glad everyone seemed to enjoy this update.
And some have even enjoyed it enough to want to support the game's development by becoming members.

So I'd also like to welcome them, by thanking them for their generosity,

I'd also like to thank my legacy members, who were supporting me before I had to stop working on the game.
And even went out of their way to support me again after I made the announcement of my return.

Really cool folks, that makes the hard work worth it in the end.
