Lost Freedom 0.9 - Dev Log #1

Hello everyone!

I'm currently working on rendering the new scenes for the upcoming update.
Among them, there's a new Evil Kate's scene... yes, she's coming back!
I've also spent a considerable amount of time going through the script and correcting a lot of spelling and translation issues, both in Spanish and English. And when I say a lot, I really mean a lot.
For the Spanish version, most of the corrections were related to moving the entire game toward a more neutral form of Spanish. Because of that, the number of corrections is quite high, even when the original text wasn't necessarily "wrong."
The English version was a different story. There were many more serious issues that had accumulated over time: missing words, overly literal translations, unnatural or non-idiomatic expressions, incorrect word choices, and other mistakes that could make some lines sound strange, change their intended meaning or even making no sense.
Here is the number of corrections I've made so far:
  • Prologue: 5 Spanish - 7 English
  • Chapter 1: 250 Spanish - 190 English
  • Chapter 2: 516 Spanish - 220 English
  • Chapter 3: 74 Spanish - 48 English
  • Kate's Story: 511 Spanish - 175 English
  • Andy's Story: 194 Spanish - 59 English
  • Amanda's Story: 129 Spanish - 53 English

There are probably still some mistakes hiding somewhere, but the number of issues has been dramatically reduced.
This is something I've wanted to take care of for quite some time, especially because some of the older English translations were made very literally. Going through everything again is taking a lot of time, but I think the overall quality and consistency of the game will be noticeably better once it's finished.
And now, for the change log:
Change Log
  • Words: [no count yet] (47,679 full game)
  • Images: 66 (4,483 full game)
  • Animations: 0 (57 full game)
  • Gallery Scenes: 0 (15 full game)

There will probably be two or three new gallery scenes in this update as well. My current goal is to continue working until I reach the new Isabella content.
So, for now, I'm mainly focused on rendering the new scenes, finishing the script corrections, and getting everything ready for the next release.

Lost Freedom 0.8 - Dev Log #1

Hi everyone. I wanted to let you know that the next update will be a small rework of some scenes/dialogues involving Isabella and Agatha, as well as some improvements to images/animations that had poor lighting or small errors.
  • Update 0.9 will continue the story of Chapter 3.

This rework is because some parts didn't turn out the way I wanted and ended up conveying a completely different idea from what I had in mind.

When I make a scene, I usually start with a goal: something that needs to happen, an idea I want to convey, or a key point in the story.

For example, in the scene where the MC sees Isabella for the first time at the basketball court and talks to her, the goal was for the player to sympathize with the MC and see Isabella as the "bad guy" in the situation.

That way, later on, the player would be able to understand and support the MC's decision not to see her again and, especially, not to tell her who he really is.

That was the original goal, but when I developed the scene, it ended up conveying the exact opposite idea.

The MC approached Isabella and talked to her in a strange way, so she reacted accordingly and ended up calling him a "pervert." After that, the MC decided he didn't want to see her again and left.

The scene ended up doing exactly the opposite of what I wanted: the MC seemed like the bad guy, Isabella seemed like the good one, and the player ended up sympathizing with her. In other words, she was right, MC wasn’t.

As a result, the MC's later decision not to see her again or reveal his identity ended up feeling unjustified.

So, I decided to change the approach to the scene in order to achieve the original goal.
Before the MC even gets a chance to talk to Isabella, something happens, she trips on the stairs and is about to fall. The MC kindly tries to stop her from falling by catching her. However, Isabella reacts aggressively, refusing to thank him and/or listen to him.
Faced with this reaction, the MC decides that it's not worth insisting and simply leaves.
This way, the scene conveys what I originally wanted much better and makes the MC's later decisions make more sense to the player.
I also modified several dialogues between the MC and Isabella on the island to make them consistent with the changes made to that scene.
These changes aren't significant enough to warrant replaying the game, but they're something I've wanted to change for quite a while.

I've also fixed some renders that had poor lighting, as well as some animations with minor errors.
