Metalsmith - Character Concept

The metalsmith represents a wealthy noble class of Mervè. Opposed to descending nobility, which is fully made up of Askallan progeny, most nobles aren't born into their class, but are assigned noble rights by the Archon in order to honor their work towards the betterment of the country and its people. Assigned nobles receive a piece of land, such as a small island, to cultivate their family bonds and care for lower ranks of society. To prove their belonging, they're gifted a noble armband, which acts as a non-written symbol of wealth.
In contrast to my previous character reveal ("Mistress"), the metalsmith shows a strong connection to the traditional values of merven society. Highlighting the flowing cloth and layering structure similar to Archon's Garb, you can see the Alva Issera taking spotlight as core of merven fashion, regardless of class. The outer layers are devoted to the element of Lamos, and symbolize water, skies and masculinity.
Race
The bright blue hair may bring some sort of discrimination from the older generations, as its seen as a direct link to Sylph'arae, the savages of merven jungles, the only thing setting him apart is lack of horns.
Phoki Chains
Phoki are the smallest form of currency of Mervè. One Phokos is equal to the lowest daily wage of an unskilled worker and is enough to purchase 2-4 loaves of bread (dependant on quality). Phoki are small, round coins with a hole in the middle, through which rope or leather strap is channeled through for convenient carrying. For cheaper chains people tie the ends, for more expensive, a small "nut and bolt" device is used to hold chains in place and it can be unscrewed to remove coins from the chain. Beads are inserted in between to separate different sets of coins, whether for organization or budgeting.
Mastery Seal
Mastery seals are predefined marks applied as tattoos for people who have proved their mastery in a craft. Although not necessary for people staying in their workshops, many craftsmen who decide to seek fortune elsewhere get them to easily prove their skill. Seals are applied in certified workshops by imbuers, and are made with use of secret formula magic ink which shines when exposed to certain materials to prove its validity. This tradition is taken from the magic mastery seals which are required for identification and control of mages across the world.
House Crest
This character's house crest is the Flaming Askallan Tor, a mythological creature resembling a bull, which was said to scorch the land with its step. The myth says that the Tor was trying to graze on the green lands of Mervè, yet the flames covering its body burned all to ash before beast could eat. In its search for food, it left the lands barren, bringing starvation to a town who ate from these fields. One day, a hero crafted a harness that did not burn, but suppressed flames, and put it on the creature then fed it. Tor was thankful, tasting food for the first time in hundreds of years, and it devoted itself to helping people. It would walk on the old fields, burning weeds and pests, leaving nutritious ash to help with the future cultivation. It is said that the creature brought prosperity to these lands and no one knew starvation for many years
Bathing culture
Ritual bathing was always a part of Merven life, as their religion - ertamerism - has recommended a bath at least once per week for women and twice for men, as a means to receive blessings and protection of the god Lamos. Recommended is also washing of face and arms as way of balancing the feminine and masculine traits, and aiding the symptoms caused by their imbalance.
That led to the erection of many public baths across the land, which became an important part of culture. People meet in these as often as possible, spending time together, drinking, telling stories, playing games and socializing.
Although there are traditional bathing suits used by all social classes, the wealthy found a way of displaying their status by additions of coverings worn outside the water. Those short tunics, skirts and wraps are often heavily adorned, and in some cases include leather and gemstone elements.

Mistress - Character Concept

The challenging part of designing characters is linking them to the world they live in. Although they're obviously one of the many races I crafted over the years, their culture has to display that, and for important characters still be unique enough. This concept is a first (public) reference sheet for a character for the upcoming webtoon, Memories of Crow. Her design was challenging as the ethnicity and current locations don't fully match, and she isn't a "typical" citizen either. I had to play around cultural and religious element, incorporating symbolism into the outfit, trying to imagine what people of this region would want to wear and how an outlier character would change that typical process of thought. In a place where tunics are more common, she displays more skin through carefully separated outfits, which both hint at her profession and create an image of a rebel fashion. Despite tropical weather, she's bravely wearing dark and expensive dyes, usually kept for formal occasions, and brings attention to her attire to create a memorable experience.

Ebonstone - Merven Materials Part 1

Ebonstone, ask. askasia [askaˈsiaː] (Askallan Mystery) is a rare volcanic mineral found exclusively in the Elveros Mountains on the Aure'a island in Mervè.

Ebonstone
is a hard, opaque material. It is black to purple or blue in appearance, with gentle glimmer of lighter tones. It has highly distinctive crystalline markings known as egeia (from ask. egeios, vein), which divide the amorphous material with translucent gold. Egeia are phosphorescent and scintillate gold in the sunlight and pale silver in the moonlight. With artificial light such as flame, they glow gold but without visible shimmer. Ebonstone is believed to be of arcane nature, as egeia tends emit stronger light if exposed to arx.
