Don't Open the Box
James sat on the couch in the living room with his younger brother asleep next to him. Duncan always got the remote first but it didn’t matter to James since Duncan always fell asleep first.
James flipped through the channels looking for anything more interesting than a show about talking dogs, but just found boring grownup stuff.
The next channel had some kind of scary movie playing showing the inside of a closet with a line of light coming in underneath the door. The light illuminated a small box sitting on the floor. Not wanting to have nightmares, he quickly hit the channel button.
“Golf… Boring.” He whispered. *click*
The same scary movie displayed on the TV again. The hair stood up on the back of his neck. *click*
Basketball this time. He went to hit the button, but before he could, the TV changed itself back to the scary movie.
Confusion spread across his face. *click* Nothing. *click* The closet door to his right slowly swung open.
On the TV, James now had a side view of both him and his brother sitting on the couch.
He quickly reached over and hit the light switch on the wall. His younger brother made a grumpy moan and rolled over burying his head.
The closet looked a lot less frightening fully lit. The box was just sitting there on the floor with a piece of folded paper on top.
Cautiously, he pushed the blanket and remote off his lap and walked over to the closet. Sensing no danger, he picked up the box and walked to the middle of the living room and sat on the floor.
He plucked the trifolded note and unfurled the top revealing the words “Don’t Open the Box”. Puzzled, he looked down and stared at the box.
He pondered it for a few seconds before curiosity got the better of him and he started peeling at the lone piece of tape holding the flaps down. When it finally let go, the box top flew open as if spring loaded and James let out a small yelp.
The box was empty. He scowled and shook it upside down but nothing came out.
Over to his left, his brother was rubbing his eyes and staring at him. “James, what are you doing on the floor?” He asked yawning.
“Nothing. Go back to sleep.” James replied in an annoyed tone before putting the box down and picking up the note again.
“You changed my show! No fair!” Duncan said before grabbing at the remote still sitting on the couch.
James ignored him and reread the note. This time though, James fully unfolded it. Written at the bottom, under the second fold, were the words “And whatever you do, don’t change the channel!”.
Goosebumps spread all over James’ body as he looked over at his younger brother on the couch holding the remote in his hand. “Duncan, n-“ *click*
