The Weight of Scales (Ch.1): Unfamiliar Territory (Pages 16-21)

Iris pulled out of the parking lot and started the drive to the nearest medical center. They were eventually stopped at a red light.

Iris noted that it was cold in the car so she turned on the heater. She pondered her game-plan for ditching Drake at the doctor's office and then going home to drink her favorite alcohol.

She checked on Drake via her rear view mirror. He had stopped shivering and was looking out the window with despair. It seemed that he had grasped his situation more clearly now and was distraught over how to fix it.

He caught Iris staring at him in the mirror. The pity in her eyes made Drake feel worse, so he covered up his face with the blanket.
Iris realized he saw her starting and quickly returned her focus on driving.

As the light turned green and the drive continued, the awkward silence became unbearable for Iris. She tried to turn on the radio, but it was only static, so she had to resort to awkward small-talk instead.

Iris prompted Drake to talk about himself again. After a concerning coughing fit, he started off by saying the most alarm inducing sentence ever. Iris immediately regretted asking him to talk.
He spoke about being teleported and possibly even cursed.

His story was absurd, as far as Iris was concerned, and it rose her anxiety level to new heights. Just as she thought the story couldn't get any more strange, Drake was gearing up to reveal something that seemed to be hard for him to say.
