Hello everyone! You know, on Patreon I'd say something like "Hello patrons!", but what name do you give your patrons on SubStar I wonder? Subbies?
I've been picking away at the pre-production on the Um Jammer Lammy comic, and I'm now at the point where I can start doing thumbnail sketches and cool things you actually get to see! It almost seems backwards, but I had to do research about the publishing end of making a comic before I could start the thumbnail sketching. The last time I worked on a comic, I chose a dpi and canvas size at random, and just went for it. Now that I've had some experience, I know what questions to ask before I set to work. It was a bit more difficult to find standardized information than I thought it would be as far as the comics industry. Basically, the dimensions of your comic depend heavily on who you decide to print it through. I dug through all the adult and furry centric publishers I could find, and wrote down each of their format specifications. Luckily a number of them lined up, so I have a consensus for size that still allows me flexibility of choice.
For those curious, I've settled on: 6.63" x 10.25" page, at 600dpi (may reduce to 400dpi depending on my computer's ability to handle the pages), estimated 23 pages plus front and back cover, full-color, with saddle-stitch binding.
To go along with the info above, I also have some traditional media sketches I've been doing in my spare time, to try and pin down Lammy's style and design. The eyes gave me the most trouble, since her eyes are very oval-shaped and cartoony. I ended up finding my way by looking through some of Ken Akamatsu's work (the artist behind Negima-sensei and Love Hina)! I also went ahead and did a round of test colors with my Copics to see if I had what I would want on hand for further traditional media colored art of her.
Copics: RV11, R05, R17, R85, R89, YR12, YR15, Y06, B01, B34, V09, W1, W3, W9 Windsor Newton: V626
That's all for now! I'll be posting the hi-res versions of these sketches, plus some extra sketches, for the $5 and up tiers in just a moment. There'll be another update next week, most likely on Tuesday. Thank you all for the support so far, I'm so excited to have things to share with you all!
