Behind the Scenes 9/1/2024


Hello guys,

Jasmine and Lizardman are back on track! I managed to keep most of their original locomotion animations, and now both characters support mantling, vaulting, and hurdling. Right now, I’m facing a big task in Jira—adapting all the retargeted animations to these characters. I’m hoping to find an animator to take this on so I can focus on other parts of the project.

But for now, I’m finally diving into character AI. Just a quick note—game AI is totally different from tools like ChatGPT or MidJourney. Game AI has been around much longer and works in a more basic way to give characters some life. My current goals are to get the characters to:
  • Navigate from point A to point B.
  • Climb obstacles and use vaults, etc.
  • Open doors.
  • Use ladders.

Behind the Scenes 8/20/2024


Hello guys,

Quick update. I’ve transferred all animations from the demo you saw in my last post and set up motion matching along with the hurdle/vault/mantle functionality as part of Move Skill v2. It’s not replicated yet, but I’m in a hurry to show you a demo as soon as possible.

Move Skill v1, which was based on the old Motion Matching version and a third-party plugin, is now busted because the author abandoned it, and it doesn’t compile in UE 5.4.3. My main task now is to fix both Jasmine and Lizardman so they can be controlled by the player again.

Regarding the ancient equipment upgrade, all three important PC components—motherboard, memory, and CPU—have been ordered. I expect to receive them this or next month. With this upgrade, I’m hoping for significant performance improvements in my workflow. Fingers crossed I won’t regret it. :)

I’ll keep you updated!

I stole animations from Epic 8/7/2024

Hi guys,
It's a clickbait caption, sorry for that 😄
In reality, Epic Games recently released their own Motion Matching solution with more than 500 animations for free to showcase their cutting-edge tech in action. So... as we were in search of a good set of new animations, I thought, why not just retarget what Epic provides to everyone and see the result? A few days of hard work, and here it is.
I'm going to keep it in our project for a few reasons:
  1. Epic's team has finally got their own solution for Motion Matching, which guarantees they will continue working on it and expanding it with new features.
  2. The Motion Matching solution they created uses root motion, but the character is driven by the Capsule and not by the root motion like in my solution. This simplifies things like network replication, makes characters more responsive to controls (I remember someone mentioning my characters are hard to control), and I don't need to write extra code for AI to drive the root motion-driven character. So I think we finally get something between quality and an easy-to-implement solution we should seriously consider now.
  3. Additionally, we get a vault system, which I wanted to create myself for quite a long time. Now Epic has done the work for us, and they promised to expand it in the future.
