Public Beta Launch of the "Court Magician"

Today marks a pivotal moment in the arcane tapestry of The Court Magician as we unveil for the first time, the Public Beta version! 🎉

This marks a key turning point in the 4-year saga of this game's development because this game is now publicly available on our itch.io page (and also Patreon/Subscribestar) for anyone who wishes to download it. This does not mean the game is complete...far from it! The content pipeline is just beginning! However, it does mean that there is a completely playable Chapter 1 with a lot of sexiness and wicked scheming.

Almost all of the placeholder art is gone now (still a few holdovers that should be weeded out over the few weeks) and we have implemented a truly dynamic and sexy erotic training system for the maid-servant in addition to the content already created for the Baroness and Slave girl.

What's Coming Next!

The saga continues! Our latest public version is out (0.10.2) and we are already hard at work on the next one. The next update will be slated for May 19th for supporters and Jun 2 for the general public. As always this update will include an animated lewd scene (although this one will be a little bit of a tease!). Let's just say that it will involve Greely observing a private carnal act with a certain noble woman. >:)

Additionally, we have created animated slave girls for the goblins, the first one is already ready and implemented in our test version and the other one is in progress. These will eventually be interactive characters (and characters that can be scried on) but for now they are just a little bit of eye candy.

We are also working on the Lewd Drawing quest which will include a little mystery that leads to either gaining favor or a blackmail opportunity.

Also included are some new scrying scenes including the Baroness in a new outfit.

We will also be working on animating the maid-top inspection and including hair and (maybe) breast size variations.

This is less sexy, but incredibly important: Behind the scenes our programmer is hard at work replacing our existing javascript dialog system with one based on a much easier to use and more powerful scripting language. This will enable the dialog to be much more reactive and faster to write. We have already integrated this new scripting for parts of the game, but as it replaces the old system it will move even faster.

As a stretch goal for this update, we will try to re-institute the "brooding by the fire" event. This opens up a menu to observe stats on all of the NPCs in the game.

An important note on Cross-Posts. Over the next several months I will be sharing 3 cross posts with other game devs who I respect very much and who I genuinely think make fantastic games, games that inspired The Court Magician and which I think you also will like. These devs also supported me with my launch and I'm very grateful to them. I know that cross-posting is a little contentious, so after these 3 cross posts I will hold off on any additional cross posts for a while, but I would encourage you to check out their work.

A Rogue on the Run

Tristan Lamprey is a rogue, a cheat, an aspiring artist, and a failed magical apprentice... And he’s on the run from the dread Archmage Xargoth! Luckily for Tristan, he has been magically teleported to the hinterlands of the kingdom: the tiny riverside mining village of Sinners Landing.

Dungeon-Crawling Fun

Venture into nearby dungeons, such as the Abandoned Copper Mines, or the twisted labyrinthine Wildlands. There you’ll encounter rotbones, fungoids, woodies, funkslimes, and dozens of other creatures. You’ll also be faced with traps, riddles, and choices that could provide great rewards, or fatal dangers. Each crawl into the dungeon is different, with an ever-expanding world of choices, monsters, and combats.

Public Version Released, Supporter Release Coming 3/30/2024

We are pleased to share that the latest Free version of the Court Magician (ver 0.9) is now available on itch. We are currently planning the next Supporter release for 3/30/2024.

We have some ambitious targets for the next version, and as always we are going to include an animated, interactive lewd scene. We also have a ton of new art to integrate and a new, lewd-filled questline. Finally we are going to update the skill progression of the Tarot system so that you get better at using the cards over time.

Two big complaints that we have received are 1) bugs and 2) art clash.

Regarding the bugs, our valiant programmer is developing an entirely new and more robust dialog system to replace the old one which was held together with shoe string and duct tape. Once fully integrated, this will remove the dreaded black-screen bug that occurs sometimes with dialog. It will also make dialog much easier to write and implement new dynamic quests.

In regards to Art Clash, there are several types of art clash here: placeholder art, default assets and art style.

The first is due to placeholder art. These are almost all completely gone from the game. There are only 2 placeholder portraits remaining and these are minor npcs that you may never even see.

The second type is due to using some rpgmaker default assets. There are only a couple of map sprite npcs who use this default art type, and they will be gone soon, but they are lower priority. We also use Rpgmaker battlebacks as the backgrounds for the NPC portraits which we may replace at some point in the future, but again, it is lower priority.

Finally we have a clash of art styles from my earliest art in the game to my latest art. My vision for the game has always been to have a combination of 90s Sierra adventure game style mixed with 90s Disney/western comic style. While I think I have achieved a functional Sierra style, my animated portraits were a mixed success.

The Disney look is actually very difficult to achieve (which is why it was one of the hardest studios to get into in its glory days), and I did not have the artistic ability to mimic it, let alone create my own Disney style characters. It is actually much easier to do a pseudo-realistic look (some of described it as early Elder Scrolls style cover art). So my earliest art in game looked like this with heavy shading and rendering and realistic proportions.

I have been formally studying art for a few years now though and recently I have had more success at achieving the Disney look. So I am working on unifying the art style with this look.

Some of my earliest and best supporters really liked the old look and prefer it to the new look and I'm sorry about that. I will incorporate a feature to toggle between the art styles in future versions.
