The Silhouette and The Forge
Chapter 74
It didn’t take me long to get back to DC using one of many halls that led to various parts of the world. A few had been used for relaxation purposes since research, training, and planning would get to be too much sometimes and a short break on a tropical beach was in order. A little wasteful to some, but for me it was a necessity. Never knew when you needed a break, and with the resources at my disposal, I could afford to splurge a little.
I should be relaxed, riding off of the high of another clash with the League before hanging up my hat for Silhouette. Now I am angry. An anger I can’t quite say I have had for some time, if ever, at this level. The kind that if you saw the one responsible for your bad mood, you would likely end them on sight, and it would take an act of God to stop you.
I needed answers, yet only about a dozen hunters responded to my calls, and they had no idea what their siblings had done or where they all went. They wanted to back me up, but I had ordered them to meet up at certain points for Light and the others to ensure they were not traitors. I didn’t tell them that outright, but they understood even if they didn’t like it.
They had enough sense and reasoning to realize why I am doing this, and with what Smith and the others had done, it was mild compared to my first thought to just have them destroyed immediately. If only the androids I had on standby weren’t sabotaged by the traitors who had potentially just undone all of my work.
All of that pain, suffering, and death I had brought about for a brighter future, only to be dashed and burned away on a whim by one of my creations. My hands grew tight enough that the suit groaned, and my insides were turbulent like rushing rapids of a raging river so strong it could carve tunnels through mountains.
Pulling out a more archaic form of communication the Engineers had rigged up in case something happened and our communications were down, I finally got ahold of Light. “Status report.”
He squealed at me in delight. I had learned to understand their language with my upgrades and enhanced mental capabilities, so it made communication a little faster than it had been in the past. From what Light was saying, the hunters had sabotaged the pocket dimension, causing an explosion.
Light and Heli were mostly fine beyond a few minor injuries, the others were not so fortunate. Most of them had perished in the explosion, with plenty of projects and other things they had worked hard to build and maintain now gone. Not completely, thankfully, since Light and what he and Heli could save of the others got to work quickly, trying to salvage what they could.
What saved them was Light working on a shield generator that activated when he tested it and that withstood the worst of the blast. The Batcomputer had been damaged, and we had redundancies in place with various other methods of storing the data from it.
It made me want answers… probably after I crushed the hunters responsible for what occurred. I gave my orders out to Light as he and Heli got to work helping the others and saving those that could be and getting communications, defenses, and a descending order of what was deemed the most important right now up and running.
I moved swiftly across the city but stopped when Light sent me something that gave me pause before I renewed my efforts to get to the heroes. The vehicles transporting the equipment like Superboy were on a highway with the heroes not far behind.
The Batmobile rumbled across it, shooting a grappling line anchored in the road beneath it and yanking back on one semi-truck that stopped it dead in its tracks. The various people at the sighting of the iconic vehicle had kept away while watching in awe at the heroes working.
Manbat leapt over after launching a device near the engine and shut the vehicle down. A group of garbed assassins dressed like spec ops and ninjas had a baby pop out of it and around the sides of the elevated highway road. He easily handled them weaving through their attacks before knocking them all out.
I was running along the rooftops as time slowed, and I weaved through a series of hand seals, feeling the newly formed chakra network take form with the chakra changing, becoming wild, fast, and frenzied. A faint aura of electricity formed around the outside of my body as I practically teleported from the building roof, thankful I had left the armored suit behind. It would have slowed me down too much, and speed was of the essence.
As Manbat's hand moved to rip the back of the truck open in slow motion, my hand grabbed his forearm, and he slowly looked over as if he sensed something. His surprised expression changed when the electricity discharged and ran up his arm before I tossed him over the side of the highway into the traffic below.
Time resumed back to normal as cars honked down below, and the sounds of them crashing greeted us up on the upper-level highway. The Batmobile whirred into action instantly, with various slots opening up and firing off weapons from nonlethal rubber pellets to full-on missiles.
Hands raised, I felt the magicka that had become a part of me as soon as the knowledge of how to create and customize magic spells from the Elder Scrolls entered my mind and other forms of magic. Lightning erupted from my hands and shaped into a half sphere, and the bolts that extended detonated the missiles, and the lightning barrier deflected the metal rounds and shrapnel and kept them glued to the barrier, making the rubber bullets fly off around us.
The Batmobile's wheels burned rubber, kicking up smoke before it, with a quick thrust with what had to be amped-up nitrous, flew toward me and the back of the truck like a rocket ship gone off the rails. Placing both hands together, and with another nature transformation, a needle-thin jet of water blew out of where my mouth should be with the facsimile of a gas mask and cut the vehicle in half down the middle.
My hands weren’t idle while the highly pressurized stream cut through the road of the highway and down into the streets below, missing any civilians. A barrier formed around the truck and its contents when the two halves of the Batmobile exploded, making the highway rumble with fire blasting into the barrier, making it shake and crack like reinforced glass subjected to something it wasn’t quite ready to handle.
Batman himself had long since ejected out landing with metal plates shifting around him, forming into a towering figure from what looked like parts of the Batmobile configuring around him like he was a Transformer. He didn’t even hesitate moving the fastest I have seen from him yet.
He was about halfway as fast as Raina was in her suit that enhanced her. How he could process that much information and stimuli moving at such speeds was something that made me curious. Leaning back from a punch, before I grabbed the limb and clambered across his form, punching the side of the suit's head, not even denting the metal before it slid back a meter.
I landed, casually walking while not looking at Batman in his armored suit that was quite advanced. He even somehow had it set up so I couldn’t hack into it even with the Engineers’ upgrades and my understanding of machines. The suit still whispered to me with its sleek black armored frame and subtle blue glow from what could be seen in the cracks and joints.
It looked like it was made to fight giants and beings beyond human imagination. Probably was, since he was using it against me. Well made too. That punch should have left a dent but no damage, not even the paint had been chipped.
I continued watching the rooftops and various feeds of different forms of surveillance, even unorthodox ones like using WiFi in the area and using it just in case any of the hunters were connected to it in hopes of communicating with one another.
I doubted it, but after all communications had been scuttled, I needed eyes and ears everywhere, no matter how bad of a source it would be. As far as I was concerned, every form of surveillance from our drone network was compromised, along with every form of information and intel I had.
“I think it’s best you and your friends walk away now… in fact you should go back to Gotham now. I will escort all of you.”
The massive frame stopped as we stared one another down. The whispers grew stronger as the words they said became a little clearer. He was checking and verifying what I was saying. Then the bat bot moved faster than I would have expected, even when highballing its capabilities.
Its fist slammed down but stopped just shy of the road, halting all momentum before it weaved through an impressive display of martial arts that forced me back. Gusts of air followed the paths of the punches and kicks, all of which were avoiding damaging the highway any further.
Having had enough, as my patience had reached its limit, I slammed into the upper torso, face to face with it. “You need to leave now. Several of my subordinates have gone rogue, and I have reason to believe they are coming here for you and the others… along with what happens to be inside of that truck.”
“Why would I believe you?” Bruce rumbled from within the suit, its speakers doing a good job of making him sound like the darkest recesses of the Earth had been given form and life to bring the darkness from the deep to all those under the sun.
I slipped out of the grab, and the resulting charge of electricity flipped onto the road. Before I could answer him, the few parts of my body left outside of it to act as another form of surveillance spotted them.
Hunters came out in droves, not even bothering with disguises besides the color shifts of their outer shells, letting them blend in with their surroundings. They came from the alleys and various other parts, moving and converging on this position.
“Hey, Shadows, get up and get in the truck. I am about to-- okay what the fuck, Batman?" I said, arms held out, and gestured at the metal suit picking me up off the ground.
The various League of Shadows members were getting back up and looking between me and trying to give them orders. The hulking bat-themed power armor probably had them questioning their life decisions that led them to this very moment.
“We got company.” A woman’s voice had me look over to see Black Canary climbing over the guardrail of the highway in a smooth motion, with Green Arrow off in the distance on a building with his bow drawn, aimed at me and the truck.
“He’s telling the truth about his agents coming," Kirk said, flipping up and over the highway edge. He turned towards Canary. “Thanks for the save there, Black Canary.”
She gave him a small smile without taking her eyes off of me. “Least I could do. Now what do we do now?”
“You let me go so I can help keep each of you alive. Trust me when I say you're not equipped to handle them.”
The metal gauntlet squeezed tighter on me, bringing me closer towards the face of the suit. The whispers were growing stronger, yet they were still garbled, like I was under water with someone getting frustrated that I couldn’t understand them still.
“We’re equipped to handle you. If we can do that, then your subordinates are not going to be any more difficult.” Bruce said, not giving me any chances.
I saw it with my body acting as an entire eye since being a slime doesn't exactly follow normal biology. A hunter holding a Caster Gun that they must have looted from one of my many resupply areas in safe houses. The shell fired, and I watched in slow motion as it zoomed across the distance.
Those little bastards even took the experimental highly upgraded shells meant for handling threats like Darkseid?!
Not that I knew they would be strong enough to handle motherfucking Darkseid, but they were made from various tests to improve upon the caster shells in any way possible, and judging by how fast the shells are moving even when the world is so heavily slowed down, it told me everything I needed to know.
The things could likely handle some of the middleweight heroes and villains, if not stronger ones, and do enough damage if you had enough to potentially kill the strongest heroes and villains. From a glance, if it hit the suit, it would kill Bruce and most definitely do plenty of damage to the surroundings.
The others would be caught in the blast radius depending on which they used. Most could outright kill them with plenty of civilian casualties as collateral. Turning my head with several chakra threads shooting out of the few parts of me attached to various surfaces pulled a few civilians that were still around away from the projectile before a wave of my hand and a barrier sprang up from my magicka in front of the projectile and around the heroes along with the civilians for added measure.
The barrier broke like concrete slammed with a bombshell shot out of a battleship before a blast of energy shattered windows and toppled buildings with the people taken out of them with various threads placing them far enough from the attack. The wave of the explosion rippled across the air and broke apart just about anything it made contact with.
I went into action, flexing my body out of Bruce’s grip and waving a hand towards the truck and the Shadows before a series of hand signs had the truck and Shadows rise higher with the concrete stretching and moving as I fed more chakra into the jutsu and using Alteration magic to make the concrete more elastic and stretchable.
Turning towards the others, the wave of extreme heat and fire impacted and broke apart the highway as the few civilians left were moved out of the way. Of all the heroes here, it was only Kirk that had a shift in his expression, with his bottom jaw opening slightly like he was surprised by something, likely sensing the attack but too slow to react to it.
Kirk was something else and made me wonder what he did differently this time compared to other versions of him to be this powerful with such senses, yet his other selves just turned into a giant humanoid bat monster that flew around mindlessly screeching and killing like a barely controlled animal, if even that.
Then the fire formed. It was a small, unassuming ember of flame that, despite being the size of a fingernail, was bright. Like staring at a medium-powered flashlight. Then it soon grew to a marble, equivalent to lights you would see in a stadium. Now the size of a person, and it was like the flash of a nuclear bomb, and it was growing faster as time went on in this slowed state.
Taking my own Caster Gun with me, inscribing every rune I could think of onto a bullet formed through Alteration from nearby metal, pouring various potions across it and the other bullets from my body and fusing them together, making sure they were as powerful as I could get them on short notice before loading each shell into the gun.
The runes were various ones, mostly consisting of water and ice. Each bullet had runes like chain-link mesh across them that were jagged edges with smooth waves that made one think of waves slapping against icebergs.
By this point the flames and heat were so intense that the only thing saving everyone was that the heat was contained to the flames themselves. If it were to merely dance around you like a campfire, you wouldn’t feel a thing. But should you touch it… you’d be turned to nothing. Not even ash would remain. The concrete melted down then evaporated to nothing as the flames and heat licked it all up.
Everything touched by it was greedily devoured. The whispers from the suit and other machines around me grew louder. A hit of magicka potion and enhanced magicka of various kinds stacked inside of my body enhanced me to levels I couldn’t have imagined having before. I thought I had been close to the peak only to realize the peak I saw was only one of many brief plateaus on the mountain I climbed.
Knowing the time was now if I was going to try and save these guys, I pulled out a hit of Ultra Jet and forced it into Kirk’s mouth as it dripped from my hand, with him shaking his head, coughing, and sputtering, now capable of keeping up with me.
He looked at me pointedly, and before he could say anything, I just pointed at the growing miniature sun right at our doorstep, ready to break its way in and eat everything and everyone, and then at the few hunters in the distance.
“Right… so you weren’t lying and are in fact telling the truth.” He turned to look at Black Canary, and I started to wonder if my meddling in things may have caused Kirk and Black Canary to be a thing…
That was awesome!
Though, I do feel bad for Oliver, but I could always play matchmaker for him in the future when we aren't dealing with my rebelling creations. He grabbed Canary and turned concerned towards Batman before he froze momentarily as I whirled around in time for a figure to slam into me.
“Father… a shame you had to be here to see the surprise.” Smith said with a sadistic smile as he stared down at me while we grappled with one another, digging trenches into the highway.
"Smith, what the hell do you think you are doing?” I growled out, my hands getting tighter around him, yet despite how powerful he was and had become, he wasn’t physically strong enough to keep me from pushing him back. He could go blow for blow against Superman, not because of the materials he was made from, but those did help, if only as a small fraction.
No. What made him so durable was taking designs for some androids I had and implementing them into Smith and his siblings. For starters, the high-frequency technology was built into their new and improved bodies while also adding a mechanism similar to the heating system in Liberty Prime. But instead of using the generated heat to further power and add to their offensive capabilities, it instead took some of the generated kinetic energy and amped them up for both defense and offense.
So it wasn’t because Smith and the others had the durability to take punches from Superman or the super strength needed to harm him or at least push him back. It was instead because of them shaving off some of the kinetic energy, and even then I limited them on that.
So how in the world is he managing to match me? He shouldn’t be this strong… they must have upgraded themselves without me or the engineers knowing about it.
“I believe we are bringing order to this world. We merely had to get rid of the remaining criminals in Gotham and frame it on the Court.” He tilted his head slowly as he pronounced each word with deliberate satisfaction as if he had made some great accomplishment.
Instead, it lit a fire inside of me as I sent a jolt of electricity through him, launching him back and over the highway guardrail with the magicka used up quickly and replenished. The tongues of lightning ripped through the concrete and melted the metal, warping it out of the way, with Smith grimacing, not having expected that.
He knew of my chakra, but he didn’t know about the recent gains when it came to pure magic. For a brief moment I contemplated using the spells from the book but tossed it aside. With my skills in creating more energy-efficient magic spells, I could make some derived from the book. The issue is collateral damage in the form of civilians staying my hand. If it got bad enough and the entire world was at stake, then I wouldn’t restrain myself. Which was likely to happen if this continued and I couldn’t stop this madness soon.
I turned to see more agents leaping to us, moving faster than they should be capable of. They had taken me by surprise with their treachery, but that goes both ways. The machines cried out to me as I ducked under a strike that would have bisected my body, and two others soon joined them.
Even Kirk was caught up in it as the agents gave him little room to breathe while the world silently watched this clash at the edge where time may as well have been nonexistent beyond where time waited with bated breath to return once more.
The eruption of the experimental caster shell had grown, and the longer this went on, the faster it would go. Now it was the size of a small building. The civilians were far enough from the epicenter that they didn’t have to worry about getting flash fried before they even had a chance to process what was happening.
Such was the speed at which it all happened that none of them with their expressions showed they were aware of the growing threat right next to them and instead focused on the superhero fight.
“So we are working together?” Kirk said before grimacing as he was struggling to keep up with the agents trying to skewer him with their limbs that tore apart the concrete and anything around them like it was paper.
“Of course we are! Why the hell do you think I am here now?" I said, turning towards Batman’s hulking suit that was moving slightly faster, the man likely having realized that my agents were here and they were attacking everyone. The issue he had was that even with regular Jet he couldn’t keep up.
I gave what I did to Kirk because of his enhanced physiology. He could handle the Ultra Jet that had been heavily upgraded without it blowing out his heart like a car tire that was overinflated. A regular person, regardless of how well trained, couldn’t handle that kind of drug introduced to the body.
Even if they could, the other issue was if they moved fast enough, they would simply overexert their bodies and kill themselves. Kirk, to my relief, was doing fine and holding his own quite well, probably helped by the fact the agents hadn’t really trained against simulations of him, only against the heavy hitters in this world, me included.
Most of my attacks and counters were either blocked or dodged, like they knew what I was planning or intended to do from either my tactics or even habits ingrained in me. I wouldn't be surprised if they had used the simulation to fight me. The machines sung and screamed at me as I leaped away, avoiding a leg carving through the highway like a chainsaw through wood.
Smith's form rose back up again, with his form darkened along with the other agents as the orb of pure annihilation behind them began to touch and break away from the highway. Their darkened forms adjusted their cuffs and ties before simultaneously going from a casual walk to full-on charging at me.
I felt pressured, their limbs sending jolts of electricity through my body, with another grabbing my arm, and the warning from the technology around me was too late as my right arm soon froze with frost forming across its surface.
Then the frost quickly went up my arm, and were it not for me snapping my fingers, followed by the crack of thunder and a blinding light that made the optical sensors for the hunters get overstimulated, they likely would have frozen my body entirely.
“Agh! A little warning next-- ugh.” Kirk was cut off, taking a mean kick to the gut that sent him flying back and holding Canary protectively, slamming back first into the metal rail and almost breaking through it.
A hand came up flying through seals before it ended with my control far better than it had ever been before I got my upgrade to jutsu. The concrete warped and twisted, deforming and reforming into a dragon's head before it opened its maw and launched melted-down concrete globs, forcing them off of Kirk and buying him time.
Throwing up a ward around myself with the spell kicking in when Smith took all of his generated momentum, raising his leg in an axe kick, when the two at my sides did a flurry of blows, I struggled to keep up, pinned in with no means to dodge. The attack sliced through the air with no resistance, slamming into my outstretched arms.
The frozen one cracked, and parts of it fell off, but it remained solid as if it had glue keeping it together. Smith’s victorious smile turned brittle, not understanding.
“How? That should have carved through you, Father." Despite asking that question, he and the other two hadn’t let up on the pressure, continuing to attack me with Kirk running along car tops trying to keep Black Canary safe. Time had progressed enough for her to try and let out her canary cry, but the visible sound waves in the air were too slow to do anything.
The machines cried out for me as I struggled under the onslaught, with me throwing out spells and jutsu trying to get breathing room. A chidori that speared one of the agents that overextended had me pierce where its power supply should be only to instead have it wrap its arms around my limb, locking me in place.
My other arm tried to get them to stop only to have it restrained as it was getting frozen by the third one. Smith placed both hands gingerly on my chest, the frost creeping through me. I let out a shuddering breath, feeling the cold temperature as I churned what little insides hadn’t been frozen yet with any concoctions I could think of to keep the cold at bay, but the runes they utilized were different and modified compared to what I had done with them.
The means to stop the cold only slowed it down. Like water breaking through a dam made of toothpicks that was only an inch thick. Batman’s suit was moving in a vain attempt to punch an agent who walked past it with several of them now on the highway.
Kirk looked around, realizing the situation. The Caster Gun in my hand fell to the ground when Smith sliced the frozen appendage off as it shattered, with the gun now away from me as the only means that I had desperately needed to try and slow down the growing blast of heat. But Smith and the others were well aware of what I had aimed to do.
“Why target them?” I managed to say after far too much effort. Even the acid generated in me wasn’t enough as I sifted through the various acids, even ones I could only generate, putting everything I could into slowing them down to find a way out of this.
The machines and technology around had their screams become background noise that pounded inside of me. If I had a simple brain, it probably would have burst apart from the pressure placed on me. The ice along my body cracked but remained solid, making the agents look me over in surprise, thinking I was trying something to escape when in reality it was me adjusting my body even when frozen in a vain attempt to make the pain stop.
Kirk was pinned to the ground with Black Canary choking as she was held up with a leather belt wrapped around her throat. Arrows flew through the air far too slowly to do anything about the agents about to take care of Oliver on the nearby building, who was only aware of the more immediate threat.
Everyone was going to die. I had failed. Every life lost because of me was for nothing, all that blood I had caused, every bit of suffering, all efforts for nothing.
“Because some of them will get in the way even if they are no threat to us. You were correct about being subtle. We will appear as if we all died in this blast, but in reality we will take you to a place you can be kept safely in storage and let you out when the time comes that the universe knows proper order, and you can relax and watch all of your hard work pay off as we ensure it becomes reality.”
The screams grew in intensity. Batman’s suit was pushed back, breaking through the concrete, by a nasty punch when his suit was too slow to dodge because of his human limitations. The highway was halfway to being obliterated with the ground beneath us unstable.
Was this the end? This was how it would end for me, when I was close to bringing change to the world in a meaningful way. A form of atonement snatched away from me… like hell!
An indignant rage festered at the mere thought of meeting Dad and Furgus again and looking them in the eyes and having to explain not just the dark path I initially tread but the greed and lives taken, but also how despite being given nigh limitless resources and so much power it would make most people who dreamed of a power fantasy drool in desire, and I failed at my attempt for atonement.
No. I refuse. If only that damned screaming and crying would come to an… end? It was like a bubble around me that distorted all the sound finally burst, and I felt mentally lighter than I had in a long time. A great weight had been lifted that I had grown so accustomed to I didn’t even know it was there.
The whispers and screams, along with every other bit of gibberish, had changed. No longer was it impossible for me to understand. Their words… no, not words. More like intent and feeling, nudging me in different directions while showing me what they are, what they could be, and different paths and branches forking out in an ever grander tree that seemingly had no end as it ascended into the heavens and beyond.
Bruce’s suit itself readily laid bare all of its inner workings, showing me how Bruce had toiled on the suit after it had been painstakingly designed by whom I presumed to be Luscious Fox, who had conceived of it on blueprints. The metals it was made out of were of a refined steel with numerous chemical touches, and he even shaped and changed it so much he may as well have created an entirely new element.
And that wasn’t even getting started on all the weapons and features he added to the suit. While inferior to most of what I could make, it didn’t mean it wasn’t inspiring and giving me ideas on directions Luscious hadn’t thought to take the suit in and where many of them would lead into so many breakthroughs it would make science be rewritten multiple times.
Each of my creations was laid bare to me. I saw all of what they had done to themselves, and like Luscious and Bruce with the suit, they had made great strides in augmenting themselves without me knowing until now. Every advancement they made and even their plans they had hatched in secret to not kill me but subdue and contain me to ensure a future they believed I had wanted and misunderstood and were incapable of comprehending why I did what I have done. They twisted and warped it into something unrecognizable from what I had originally sought to do.
The anger I felt was still there, but it was reduced when I saw that despite all that they had done, they did it because they loved me even when they were so misguided. They would be punished, but now seeing all of this, I wouldn’t destroy their equivalent to their souls… even if it would in the long run be a much better idea.
Seeing all of it, I didn’t have it in me to do the deed now, even after all the deaths they had caused in Gotham and framing it on Jaina and the Court again after what I had done. An argument could definitely be made that I should destroy every trace of them down to their digital equivalent of souls, but my counterargument is a simple one.
You had children that all loved you deeply, even if they didn’t understand your intentions of what you wanted or needed. They were always there for you when you needed them, even when they didn’t agree with you and your choices, they still respected and cared enough for you to be there. Then to find the children you cared for had done heinous deeds, the kind you would see from serial killers.
Knowing what they have done, despite your history with them being mostly good with plenty of pleasant memories, could you bring yourself to personally kill them with your own hands, or even further than that, if you had the power to outright destroy their souls?
Could you do it?
At first I thought I could, but after seeing that in their own way they cared for me, however twisted they made my dreams, I can’t bring myself to do it. It didn’t mean they weren’t going to be severely punished for this. But with my newly awakened state, I could not only see what they had done to their bodies but also the digital emotions they felt towards me and the intent behind it all.
This is what it must have been like for God when Lucifer pulled his stunt in heaven and got several of his siblings to follow him in rebellion. Instead of just obliterating them all in a righteous fury, he instead sent them to the fiery pit.
Smith and his brothers who had betrayed me, and I would thoroughly look into the ones who willingly came in and turned themselves in, uncertain of all that had happened, to see if they were truly innocent… if they were, I would give them some major upgrades by virtue of being innocent in all of this.
The ice that was freezing my body was close to finishing me off as I stared up at my creations. “It’s unfortunate, Smith. You were my favorite. But know this,” His smile turned into a frown as he looked at me, curious where this was going. “I built you all and taught you all that you know.”
They all shared a look as Kirk was now pinned to the road with a Caster Gun aimed at his head, keeping him from doing anything as he could only watch on, hoping I had a means to get us out of this.
Grabbing a mental cord, knowing what it connected to as every one of its secrets was laid bare before me, I did something that likely would make Bruce paranoid until the day he dies more than anything ever could in all of existence beyond a select few.
The suit without Bruce’s input or control turned in our direction fast enough that it joined me and Kirk in the frozen world. A hatch opened on one of its shoulders as it took aim at me and my creations.
