AI Involvement - Backgrounds / Battle sprites
Hey guys,
I'm just looking to gauge people's opinion on topics and about the use of AI for certain aspects of the project. To clarify, this would only be for things like blurred backgrounds, possibly location backgrounds and battlers. This will never involve AI for main artwork pieces / CG / Busts etc.
You may have noticed recently that a lot of the new and upcoming artwork / CGs do not feature backgrounds. You may have also noticed that a lot of the backgrounds for locations do not match up in artstyle (in fact some are 3d renders). And going forward with the new battle system, we will need to create a variety of battlers, as well as battle backgrounds for all the different places battles could occur.
In a lot of cases for the CGs I have reused the same background and applied it behind the scene (seriously you might see this popup a lot): What I'd like to do is add actual backgrounds to these CGs that make sense for the context of the scene. Here is an example of what I mean. Top is no background. The middle is the background I always use for scenarios like this and the bottom is an AI generated blurred background based on the Captain's Quarters location background (where the scene takes place).
Me personally, I see this as an improvement, especially considering how often that starry background window is used. Also there are quite a few instances where that background would not fit.
You might be asking, why I don't just hire an artist to do these backgrounds? Well we have to review the situation of the project. Right now the project makes just about enough to cover the cost of Witchking on a monthly basis (despite the goal's seemingly not matching the reality of the situation.) We will never be likely be able to fund for things like CG backgrounds, location backgrounds and battlers. Especially when I think funding is better suited for things like animations and voice actors.
My concern is that the reuse of this particular background as well the location backgrounds being all different and chaotic in styles / approach could make the game lackluster for an eventual steam launch. The way I see it right now is that this is a very cost effective way to develop some of the assets we need and that way we can put funding towards things that I imagine people would like to see more such as animations and voice acting.
Again, I just want to reiterate. We will not use AI for any focal point artwork, no CGs, no bust work, nothing like that. This is to simply add a bit of more interest into the CGs via generated backgrounds as well creating a cohesive look & style for the planet locations.
Please let me know your honest thoughts around this as I know this a hot topic for debate. I want to hear people's actual thoughts which is why I'm not polling this, but you can always use the like / dislike button if you do not wish to comment.

I'd be alright with it in light of your finanical commitments; it's a better idea than just blurring real-life photos and the like as I've also seen in other places.

I agree with your point, Charon. As someone who’s supported the project since the very beginning, I am pretty passionate about it but even I have to admit that the game’s already struggling as it is. Your idea seems like a suitable solution to allow the game’s development to continue without breaking the bank. Personally, I am not against the use of AI to enhance projects like this, especially if the bulk of the work is already being handled by capable developers like you and Witchking00. So, go ahead with your idea, boss.

I'm not the biggest fan of AI but can see why you are considering using it. Happy for you to do what you need to do to keep the project going and help get releases out.

I think this is a perfect example of where AI can be used to affect. There are no characters involved, and simplistic backgrounds are a place where I think using or not using AI make very little difference. If you have specific ideas and feel comfortable with the results, then I see nothing wrong with using the tool. I would not like it used in a creative situation (such as character design) but for inanimate things in the background I am ok with it.

I support this, but I’d like AI to be used mainly for translating the dialogues. I constantly have to edit the files to translate them because my English isn’t very good. (And since you plan to release it on Steam in the future, I think it’s totally fair to have other languages.) In my case, I translate into Brazilian Portuguese, but it would be nice to have Spanish, Japanese, and other languages as well.
