Friends in Need Chapter 1 Remake v0.25
Barring any game-breaking bugs, this will be the final version of the Chapter 1 remake. Contains 889 images.
Ooooh I don't know about this 'sexy' chapter title card. You should replace it with Guy looking depressed!
*shakes fist!*
There are some aspects of the original that I'll miss but, all in all, I really like this. Looking forward to the next installment as always!
Thanks! I'm planning to eventually make the "old" Chapter 1 available as an extra from the main menu, so it'll always be available. :)
I'm a little bit torn about the remake to be honest. There are aspects I really like, the better builup for mc's and Nicki's relationship for example. On the other side there is a lot that makes the Chapter feel kind of bloated now, or at least makes the pacing worse. The old chapter just felt a lot tighter and on the point as the remake. The remake feels more like aimed at existing players, like a flashback with easter eggs, as an Introduction that want's to be a good onboarding experience for new players.
That's fair! I can see where you're coming from (I may have gotten a little *too* cute with the Ashe cameo..) but I feel like the original Chapter 1 was almost a bit too lean. It worked for what I was doing at the time, but I like that the new one lets people kinda sit in the world a bit, instead of being almost entirely confined to Guy's condo.
There are things I miss, the original opening wasted no time in getting to the action, and in my case, showing just how creatively mean it could get. That worked to its advantage when I first played and it was the only chapter. It stood out in my memory. But there's stuff in the new version I like as well.
On the Ashe thing I think you're overthinking again. If you don't know who it is yet it's just a very brief appearance by an attractive lady in small, tight clothes (Which is hardly something you should be avoiding in the introductory stages of an AVN), and if you do recognise her I can't see how the early cameo would be bothersome to anyone.
Oh CH1 had definitely some room for improvement, as said especially the better insight into MC's and Nicki's friendship felt nice, and the whole "what happened after he got rich" segment with the lawyer and him buying the Building etc.
The whole Crypto bullshit in the beginning tho, maybe it's just me, but my brain goes instantly into "booring, skip" mode whenever I read such slop. Maybe it's just written to well and sounds too real^^ But in the end I think while it's important to know that it happened, theres no real benefit to the Player to know it in such detail.
For the Ashe scene, I don't think that's a problem for CH1. It will be more of a thing for CH2 to make it not feeling weird/too convinient that MC runs ino the random Girl a second time, after moving, changing social circles, in a big city.
If anything the "problem" with the Scene, in my opinion, is more about how it feels like a rather plumb attempt to set a flag if MC is an redpill dude/incel and if yes how far he's gone already.
Especially as, in my opinion, no other reaction than Smiling at her would make sense, considering how he behaved so far and how good friends he and Nicki became. This dissonance is somewhat in the full Chapter if you aim for the dark path, at least in the way you tell the Story in the remake.
Maybe the branching point into the different paths was really the strongest point in the OG Ch1. That Nicki's visit and the plea for money let mc either stand up to be a true "good guy" or (maybe not rationally but emotionally) snap and let all his frustration, pain and dissapointment out on her.
The Scene was impactfull enough to believable set up MC for the path the player would steer him in future chapters. And it worked for all possible outcomes, while for the remake only the "good guy" choices feel believable. What makes it ultimatevly less fun to explore and feel more Kinetic than a "choices matter" Game, and that's probably what I liked most about the Game, that it had multiple very different paths.
Sorry for the wall of text, in the end I believe I would have liked a "Definitive Edition" of the og CH1, expanded with the good parts of the remake, more than the total rewrite of it.
