Emulated Minds

An emulated mind (EM for short) is a computer simulation of an individual's brain, as well as various important parts of the body, such as hormones and nerve endings, in order to recreate the person's self. An accurate EM can be produced based on a nondestructive brain scan, produced by micromachines taking "photos" of neuron structures in the brain.

The first successful whole brain emulation was performed in Bangalore in 2113, and replicated by labs in Shenzhen, Tokyo, San Francisco, Seoul, Paris, and Ibadan within the year. This led to an explosion in the development of the relevant technologies, as well as a rapid shift in the legal environment. China developed the New Life Assurance Campaign within the year, moving forward with performing brain scans of the population for backup and eventual use in case of death. Other countries soon followed, including the United States in 2115 with the MINDGUARD program.

One of the issues with very early whole brain emulation was the relatively slow speeds of emulation: the first ones ran at around 5-7% realtime speeds, even when running on top-of-the-line hardware. Developments in relevant physical and software architecture - heavily subsidized by state action - led to the earliest EM chips, designed specially for the purposes of emulating human minds. The first realtime EM chips were produced in Hsinchu in 2118, and continued developments led to increases in the variety of companies producing realtime or faster-than-realtime EM chips, with the Yellowstone supereruption in 2123 only slowing the pace of growth, not stopping it altogether.

In 2122, owing to rising concerns surrounding EMs (both EM abuse and potential domination of biological humans by EMs), all major economies and powers met at the United Nations to discuss a legal framework for the continued development of EMs and EM chips. The result was the Global Emulation Regulation Treaty (GERT), which established international limits on the number and sorts of EM chips that could be produced, as well as ensuring that EMs would be treated as full citizens of their respective countries. Each country is permitted to produce (or purchase from other countries, if they lack the capacity on their own) a number of EM chips equal to 1.05 times their expected death rate per annum. After the Yellowstone eruption in 2123, these limits were briefly voided, due to the decline in global food production and widespread famine; however, they were put back in place in 2127, as large scale controlled-environment agriculture came online and the deaths began to level out to a more regular pace. They were similarly voided for the duration of the First Contact War (March 22, 2200-July 7, 2215) and the Penultimate War (April 11, 2235-April 22, 2255).

EM chips continued to become better over the course of the first half of the 21st century, before beginning to level out in the 2140s, with a top-of-the-line EM chip managing 300x realtime in 2153. The current top-performing EM chip, the Japanese Kagami 4620Z, was developed in 2256 and manages 462x realtime speeds in performance tests, and is about the size of a computer tower. The company is currently working on the 4660Z, which they claim will manage 466x realtime speeds.

Emulated Minds and the Law
Legally speaking, an EM is considered a distinct individual from the person whose brainscan they are based on, as well as a human with full human rights against things such as involuntary experimentation, slavery, torture, murder, etc. They do inherit legal responsibility for any criminal or civil activity committed prior to the scan on which they are based.

In the vast majority of jurisdictions, EMs are not permitted to be privately "forked," i.e. to take a single EM instance and copy it to run on two separate EM chips simultaneously, as two distinct individuals, nor is an individual allowed to start running an EM based on them while still alive. The major exceptions are Japan, where this can be done with psychological examinations, acquiring a license (limited in quantity by the government), and paying appropriate fees, and Ambarisha, which is not a signatory to GERT and is under sanctions due to concerns about the severe degree of forking that is ongoing there (3,523 original EMs as of 2205 became over one billion, though forking has largely stalled out since 2212). Governments are allowed to fork EMs, and use their "excess" EM chips to do so. They often also auction out such rights to various corporations, which are used to copy high-value EM employees (with consent and appropriate compensation).

In cases where EMs are legally forked, both EMs divide all assets between them, involving the judicial system if necessary (e.g. handling large illiquid assets such as a home). EMs who are forked at the behest of the government or corporation are generally paid enormous sums so that neither fork sees their wealth significantly reduced.

Permanently turning off an EM is considered to be killing them under the law in all jurisdictions. This means that even in cases where an EM is found legally liable for self-copying, only the most draconian nations will actually turn them off. As EMs are still guilty of the crimes of their pre-fork/scan self, however, there can be extremely quick executions of forks of those individuals who have already been convicted of such crimes. In 2182, the United States turned off 13 copies of Jacob Juncker, an American radical socialist and revolutionary, after a single brisk trial for treason, for example.

Emulated Mind Platforms
An EM chip is generally installed into a "platform" - a physical, mobile, specially-designed piece of machinery, made to enable the consciousness on the EM chip to interact with the normal world. Most platforms are humanoid, and designed to resemble the individual's biological body. Dysphoria and difficulty adapting are frequent consequences of nonhumanoid bodies.

The most common platform for new EMs is the Keter Type-12. It is shaped to the individual's pre-mortem dimensions. A specially designed, printed set of pseudoflesh is then plastered over it. The pseudoflesh is genetically engineered to resemble the individual's pre-mortem body, and incorporates all soft features such as skin, breasts, penis, nose, ears, and hair. Without the pseudoflesh, the person simply looks like a largely-sexless robot. The pseudoflesh is fed by specialized systems in the Keter Type-12 which turn consumed food into usable nutrients for it (100kcal/day is enough), or is rubbed with nutrient paste if ordinary food is not forthcoming or forgotten. As it is alive, it can recover from minor damage and abrasions that an individual suffers in their ordinary day-to-day.

The Keter Type-12 has ball joints at the phalanges, wrists, elbows, thighs, knees, and ankles, granting improved flexibility. The EM chip itself is shielded inside the highly-durable chest. It is capable of lifting approximately twelve times what an ordinary human male of equivalent height could. It weighs between 15 and 30% more than the person's pre-mortem weight. It is powered by a SMES (superconductive magnetic energy storage) battery, which uses a superconductive solenoid to maintain a charge, and powered by being plugged into a wall. It can be recharged within a few minutes, and the charge lasts for forty days, though earlier recharges are recommended.

Payment for a Keter Type-12 and Laishi 1070X (a 1.07x realtime speed EM chip), or locally-preferred equivalents, is covered by virtually all national insurance plans in case of an individual's death. However, cosmetic alterations, upgrades, and other adjustments are paid out of an individual's own budget. In cases where an individual dies repeatedly, due to an excessive lack of care, they may be placed in 'cold storage' for a period, to reduce strain on the national budget and EM stores from such overuse; the length varies from a few months to years.

Vivian Charybdis Washington

Vivian at a charity function for The Vivian Washington Foundation, 2258, in Los Angeles, California, FCS. Donors who gave more than $100M to the cause got their choice of blowjob, titfuck, anal, or intercrural, to completion or ten minutes. Vaginal cost $300M.
Vivian Charybdis Washington is an American best-selling author (of both nonfiction and erotic fiction), philanthropist in the field of EM rights, mother of fifteen, semi-retired adult film actress, former prostitute, and the original mind on which the "Vivi" EMs are based. She currently lives in Anaheim, California, with her husband, Todd King. According to polls done by Maxima, Alita, and World Culture, she is the most recognizable sex symbol in human history. She is regularly voted the most beautiful woman alive, as well.

Vivian was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 30, 2100. Her parents were both enlisted in the Navy and stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman. She was noted by her teachers to be a bright student, getting excellent grades, though she was also repeatedly censured due to being caught engaging in sexual activity on school grounds seven times between 2114 and 2118, leading to a police investigation into the possibility that she was being sexually abused in 2117, which lasted three months and concluded she was simply extremely sexually promiscuous.

On July 19, 2119, she acquired a copy of her own brainscan from an employee of the Department of Health and Human Services (later prosecuted for his involvement), by means of flirtation, seduction, and sexual activity. As the MINDGUARD program was only in its early stages, and had not even finished fully scanning the American population, security was woefully insufficient.

After spending the next month doing relevant research, starting on August 22, Vivian proceeded to email copies of her brainscan to 3,594 brothels in various countries around the world. Each was accompanied by a brief paragraph of text, explaining in evocative detail that she intensely fetishized being sexually used for men's pleasure, and thought that as EM technology advanced, her brainscan could be used to help service men. During her later prosecution, she would also claim to have been motivated by a desire to reduce illicit human trafficking, arguing that the copying of her brainscan would allow the supply of prostitutes to meet the demand without forcing women into nonconsensual sexual slavery, but this was not part of the email in question.

On November 27, 2119, shortly before her nineteenth birthday, the FBI, in coordination with the Honolulu Police Department, arrested Vivian for her involvement in the illicit EM trade. She was eventually convicted by jury in 2122, but due to relatively lax laws at the time (owing to the novelty of the technology), Vivian served only nine years of a fifteen year sentence.

When she emerged from prison in 2131, at the age of 30, there were an estimated 1,000 active EMs based on her original brainscan. As the years went on, and various illicit EM chips entered circulation from a variety of sources, more and more brothels began acquiring such EM chips, and Vivi quickly outpaced all other EMs involved in the sex trade in terms of the number of instances active. It is estimated that the number of Vivis reached 100,000 by 2150, and some estimates put the current number of Vivis at as high as twenty million. It's estimated that Vivis make up 29% of all EMs involved in the sex trade. Polls suggest that 24.6% of all men, and 1.2% of all women, globally, have had sex with a Vivi, generally in the context of prostitution.

Vivian returned to college after leaving prison, pursuing a degree in chemical engineering and meeting her future husband, Todd King. They were married in 2133, and she ultimately chose not to finish her degree, instead working as a prostitute for various classmates, former teachers, friends, and strangers, with Todd playing the role of her pimp and receiving all the money (at her insistence). She had her first child with Todd in 2135, becoming a "full-time mother," though she continued to have sex for money until 2139, when she moved into the porn industry. She has starred in 3,386 adult films, including 189 solo films, and 894 co-starred with her husband. She regularly engaged in live adult streaming on Tuesdays and Fridays from August 2151 to April 2200, resuming in July 2215 with the end of the First Contact War, and continuing to a "goodbye" stream on June 5, 2238, wherein a full one hundred fans ran a train on her. Her husband was a frequent participant in these streams, though she also had a twice-yearly lottery for a 'lucky fan' to be flown out to personally participate in these streams as an actor. Since her 2238 semi-retirement, she has appeared in three additional porn works, released in 2243, 2249, and 2255.

Vivian wrote a book, Mother of Whores: The Original Vivi, in 2139, capitalizing on the increasing popularity of her EM descendants. It was co-written with three separate Vivi instances, who provided some of their own life experiences to the text. As its popularity climbed, an uncensored version was republished in 2142, which included detailed descriptions of a variety of extreme sexual activities that the Vivi co-authors were involved in. Numerous additional books have since been published based on the experiences of various Vivis. Since 2147, all proceeds from Mother of Whores have gone to The Vivian Washington Foundation, a charitable foundation focused on helping exploited EMs. She has also written a number of erotic fiction works, most notably the best-selling Whorebound series (currently seventeen books) and the best-seller Cuckquean's Paradise.

Vivian's children have been largely kept out of public record, but her pregnancies can mostly be traced through her filmography. Her children were born in 2135, 2139, 2142, 2145, 2149, 2153, 2156, 2163, 2168, 2170, 2174, 2176, 2177, 2181, and 2188. Her husband retired from his job as a chemical engineer in 2142 with the birth of their third child, to assist in raising their children; he has not since returned to work, barring co-starring in some adult films with his wife, as the proceeds from Vivian's books and her filmography have provided the family a comfortable living.

Her husband was drafted on April 7, 2200, during the opening stages of the war; he was KIA in September 2200, during the invasion of Nunangut, and his backup (taken in August of that year) was restored in February 2201, to continue his service. Vivian herself was drafted in 2206, following her youngest child becoming a legal adult. She served as a celebrity speaker to help improve troop morale during the war. Her husband was finally demobilized in 2209, and the pair returned to living together, though without having any more children. According to interviews, during the nine years they spent mostly separated, she had sex with numerous different partners in order to meet her high libido. Her husband has stated he gave her permission to have sex with other men whenever she wanted before he left to serve. One of her children, Marcus Atticus King, died in service on Oct 7, 2202, and the data center containing his brainscan was destroyed by an orbital strike. Three of her other children (Marian, Adrian, and Donald) also died in service during the First Contact War, and two more (Hera and Hector) died as civilian casualties; other than Marcus, all were ultimately restored from their brainscans.

In 2221, she was the editor of the anthology biopic War Whores in coordination with several Vivi veterans, who wrote about their own experiences in various national militaries. Large numbers of Vivis were drafted into service, since EMs can serve in various combat and logistics roles that are more difficult for biological humans to perform. Given her high IQ and mathematics talents, they frequently served in various national service's space forces or engineering corps. After the war's end, a large portion of those demobilized did not return to the sex trade, which has served as a major cleavage in the Vivi population; many who are now out of the sex trade go by "Char" or "Charybdis" by way of distinction. The proceeds of War Whores have gone to the Vivian Washington Foundation since 2223; for the first two years after publishing, 80% of profits went to the Vivi authors, with the other 20% going to Vivi veterans as a small stipend.

Vivian and her husband did not personally participate in the Penultimate War. Two of her children, Adrian and Victor, died serving in the US Space Forces, but were restored from backup (Adrian) and brainscan (Victor).

Since her last livestream in 2238, she has largely retreated from the public eye, though she continues to write erotic fiction at a steady pace. According to an interview in 2249, shortly before the release of her second "post-retirement" film: "I still love sex. I still have lots of it, with my husband, other men, other women... I'm just tired of being the center of attention, especially with the war... it just seems crass. Especially with Victor and Adrian dying. I don't know when I'll get back in the business properly. Maybe I never will."

A 2191 economics paper, Why Vivi? asked the question of why her forks had done so well relative to virtually all alternatives. While forking in the sex trade was already studied (it proliferates due to the relatively low supply of willing female prostitutes, compared to demand), the question of Vivi in particular had only been lightly touched on by that point. The ultimate conclusion of the paper was that it was a confluence of several major factors, including:
  • Her extremely high libido (top 0.1% of women or above);
  • Her particularly high IQ and conscientiousness;
  • A high degree of empathy and quality skills as an active listener;
  • A high degree of interpersonal charm;
  • Her generally prosocial, selfless, and nonviolent personality;
  • Her extremely low standards in both long and short-term partners;
  • Her broad kinks and sexually giving nature, which combine to produce an exceptionally flexible partner.
