What is Luminary Protocol?

It's an Isekai AVN with a bit of a twist. The MC isn't the only one who finds themselves in a new world. He arrives with several others at the same time. But the world they arrive in, Lumis, has been receiving travellers from other worlds for thousands of years. It's a warped mirror image of Earth, but an Earth where magic is real. The world is infested with gods and powerful entities, each one the spiritual ruler of their own territory. Some are benevolent, some are hostile but many are not what they might first appear.

You will find yourself drawn in the centre of power of the most advanced nation on Lumis. Arrivals from other worlds are sought after; for some it's their skills and knowledge, but for others, especially the young, it's just that they can be trusted and trained into useful agents for the state. The Triumvirate is a nation that is under siege by enemies on all sides; beset by disasters, infighting, criminality and the covetous machinations of powerful people and gods. In its struggles to bring enlightenment to Lumis, it has made many enemies, not all of whom are apparent. With no prospects, you are drafted into a prestigious academy, trained in combat and dropped right into the seething heart of the ongoing struggle for the city's soul.

But the god that brought you all to The Triumvirate did so for a reason. Strange anomalies begin to manifest within you and your close companions. Powerful abilities emerge, abilities that will make you valuable. And make all of you targets.

What to expect?
It's a story first AVN. Each update adds around 12-20,000 words of story and since July 2025 I've released about 1 update a month. This is the type of story I always wanted to write. I take a great deal of care to craft and write interesting and consistent characters. I've also taken great care to write characters that are interesting, different, likable and that each one brings something different to the table. The feedback I've had since launch suggests I'm succeeding with that. So expect a deep plot, some mysteries, some great characters and a lot of adult themes. Sex, nudity, violence, drug use as well as some horror and gore are common. This isn't a game where the MC has a sexual encounter every 2 minutes. Encounters are detailed, fleshed out and earned. They are intended to be as realistic as possible in terms of how they come about and their content when they do.

The storyline is fixed, but there are choices to make. Most of these choices change the flavour of the story, but not the outcome. E.g. you may choose to kill someone, cripple them or talk them down. Which one you choose will earn you a certain alignment point, a bit like the Mass Effect Renegade/Paragon system. What happens next will be different based on your choice, but the outcome is still the same - you defeat the bad guy and are successful (or not). It isn't a game that aims to punish readers for not making the "right" choices. Or a game that makes you feel like have to play it through multiple times to see everything. It's just intended to allow some variation for role playing purposes. Some characters will respond better to certain alignment choices. This won't lock out those characters, it just means it may take a little longer to unlock their unique content.

I use AI extensively to generate static images, sprites and animations. I'm a lone developer, with no artistic skill and no budget to hire artists. I understand the discourse around AI, but the reality is the project just wouldn't exist without it. I use a mixture of home generation tools like SDXL for image creation. I also use professional image generation tools for specific creations (like placing characters naturally in scenes, rather than only using sprites). I also use professional animation tools like Kling and Pixverse to create SFW high quality animations. For NSFW animations I use Framepack, WAN2.1, WAN2.2 or LTX-2, generated on my home PC. I estimate there to be about 6-7 hours of content in the game currently (v0.49). There are thousands of graphic assets, including hundreds of animations.

The latest public version can be downloaded here:
Full 1.011R->1.022R patch notes:
Added in Cartographers Guild mission 1.
Added in Zara debrief 1.
Updated the notebook system to better handle messages from multiple people + added in message from Matsuyo to link the mission and the debrief.
Corrected a lot of spelling and grammar errors.
Fixed a bug that would cause a crash when choosing to take Marcus's warning about training seriously.
Updated every 2d image and sprite in the game + galleries and side images + some animations to reduce brightness and increase contrast slightly. AI 2d image generators tend to create quite bright, slightly washed out images and I decided it best to go in and add renpy controls to improve the colours etc.
Replaced a large number of sprites for the MC, Sarah, Alice and Lilly from the first part of the game. I have finally found out why they were being so inconsistent and have tried to fix all the worst offenders. Also replaced a number of animations so that they match the new sprites.
Added 2 x animations of Lilly for her dressing gown scene in the Prologue.
Fixed a mutant hand in the academy locker room image.
Fixed a mutant foot in Isabella's sex missionary POV scene.
Added in a missing animation towards the end of Isabella's sex scene.
Added in code that should catch if you are loading a save from the old version of the game, explain that you can't do that and then kick you back to the new game start.
A few other miscellaneous fixes (missing side images mostly).
Fixed an issue with Saga & Felsia's galleries not displaying, added an extra sprite of Felsia to make her gallery and profile screen less bare.
Added code to detect if audio is muted in the game settings and remove the mute on load. I have removed the option to add mute in the menu. This is because the mute function blocks animations that have their own sound from playing at all. I removed the option to mute in the last update, but didnt realise that the mute would still be stuck on for those who had previously set it. There would then be no way to unmute it. So the new code detects if mute was set on load and removes it. If you want the audio off, just lower the volume slider to 0.
Not including replacement sprites and animations, this update adds:
2 x animations of Lilly.
1 x animation of Isabella.
95 images/sprites of Emelia
36 x animations of Emelia
*12 x images of the MC.
*8 x animations of the MC.
18 images of Bram + speluncid opponents & villagers.
6 x animations of speluncid opponents & villagers.
10 x images of Saga
2 x animations of Saga
1 x image of Felsia
1 x animation of Felsia
27 x images of Zara
7 x animations of Zara
48 x backgrounds
2 x transition animations
*He also appears in a fair few of Emelia's images and animations.
I hope you enjoy the update!

Development Update 26/10/2026
This week I did a little more bug and spelling correction on the next update before it's public release on Wednesday and spent the rest of the time working on the content for the update after that.
The next update will include the 1st Isabella standalone event and the first Emelia standalone event. That is the event where you pop in to see Isabella to see how she is getting on putting the Pearl back together, which if you are on the romance path, turns very steamy. And the event where you pop in to check in on Emelia after your first Guild mission and she needs the tender loving care of Lilly.
For the Emelia event I have created all the base assets. For the Isabella event I have pretty much created all of the 2D assets and about 75% of the animated ones. I also wrote a new event in at the start of this event, where you get to meet one of her grateful entertainers. I won't go into too much detail on this scene, it introduces a new character. This isn't a main character, but she will be someone that pops up as a friend. She is intended to be a normal person, nothing particularly heroic or Machiavellian about her, she's just trying to make her way in the city. It's only a short event, it's intended to do two things. 1. Introduce a simpler character (in that she has a much simpler story, no big plotlines, no great perils or daring do, she is just there to be a friend.. or more). 2. Add a bit of heroism to the MC, he did recently save a lot of the entertainers at the Pearl from a life of slavery, so I figured it would be nice to have that acknowledged. She is also the first character I've had to create variable image content, depending on your set preferences. So that was an experiment. It's not difficult to create variable images or technically difficult, it just gets a bit fiddly. Especially as I have to switch back and forth between the image versions to make sure they are aligned correctly. Which means undoing and redoing the images being added. So... not 'difficult' just very fiddly, I'm guessing my ADHD doesn't help with that either.
The other update is that I discovered that my new AI toolset subscription gives me unlimited access to SeeDream image creation and editing. Which is cool. Every image (and base image used for animations) during the intimate scene with Isabella has been created using Illustrious sprites and guide images combined with the required background scene, so that the characters look naturally placed within the scene. It's not perfect, it still screws around with the background and camera angle a lot of the time. As a lot of these images are POV shots, I don't think it matters too much as it can be accounted for by the MC moving. It does mean that all the lighting is correct, the sheets and pillows are all correctly deformed to their bodies and the animators do a better job because they appear naturally in the environment, rather than a 2d sprite added on top of it. The style is probably a bit close to photorealism for me to feel comfortable, but it's still clear enough it's not real people. As it creates the people based off illustrious sprites they do look too neat and tidy to be real.
A few screenshots from what I have been working on this week - one of the new character, a few of Lilly and Emelia in their outfits for their event and a few shots from the Isabella event. None of the Lilly or Emelia pics have been processed, they may not get used (probably will, Emelia will probably lose the garter straps and Lilly's outfit won't be quite so... plunging. Maybe, I'm still debating with myself about the plunginess of her outfit). Usual small print for the demo images shown here basically.

Development Update 19/10/2026

1.02R (well, 1.021R now) has been released to early access. The public version will go live on 28th October. The patch notes for the update are at the bottom of this post.

The last week saw me putting the finishing touches on the first cartographer's guild mission and building the Zara debrief. That went pretty well, SeeDream, while far from perfect, is certainly getting much better at not screwing around with the background image, so I've had less instances of random items being replaced with other things. Which has meant I was able to build the debrief in a day.

I lost a day when I got notification that the online AI editing service that I use has formally set the date to which it is retiring all the stuff that actually gives it a USP over what Google and every other big name AI image editing tool offers. Mid November. That's frustrating. A lot of these tools use chat to edit, and I despise it. I've talked about it before on here, so I won't go into it again. Suffice to say, i find chat to edit AI editors to be either incompetent or maliciously compliant and they are a stressful and unpleasant tool to use. The tools they offered that I liked were built around precise inpainting and built on the Stable Diffusion platform. Primarily - hand fixing, image extension, object removal, background removal and occasionally inpainting items. They weren't perfect, but they were cheap to use, only edited the specific bit of the image I told it to and had no content filtering. They do have replacement options but they have content filtering and cost 4x as much for the same thing. That's progress for you.

So, I've cancelled my subscription with them and gone with another provider. I lost a day researching and testing out alternatives. I found another provider that allows NSFW content, provided you pay the higher subscription tier. But that's ok, because I will use the benefits of that tier anyway. It also includes SeeDance, WAN3, Hailuo and their own propriety image and animation generators with NSFW added. Added bonus, they have the slightly lower image quality but cheaper versions of SeeDance, so that helps spread the cost a little bit. The hand fixing they offer is crap. This is the hardest bit, the service I used had a really good hand fixing tool. I'm still not sure how they did it. It's built in stable diffusion, and I can add hand fixers into my image gen stuff via ADetailer, but it's nowhere near as good (although free to use and can brute force solutions but churning out lots of attempts). That's also using Stable Diffusion architecture. I initially tested it on SDXL, but it seems Illustrious works better. Anyway, I have a solution. Image extension can be done via this new service - this is used when a source image has anatomy cut off and I need to extend the image to complete the full image of the person. Background removal I've setup a piece of software called IOPaint, via the Pinokio app manager. This is a nice little tool which you can access a lot of different background removing models with. I eventually found what is probably the best general purpose one. It removes the background about 4x as fast as the online subscription service did, so that's nice. It also comes with an object removal tool that is much faster and seems much better than the subscription services one, so that was two birds with one stone. So, I lost a day, but in return I got access to more and probably better overall tools.

I spent Sunday sorting out some variable stuff and also went through and adjusted every image in the game. I added to each image a reduced brightness and slightly increased contrast. AI image generators tend to produce very clear, very well lit images. Which I do want for sprite creation because if you have all sorts of fancy dramatic lighting, the sprite can look weird when put into a different scene. However, by default the end up looking a little washed out as a result. So I've adjusted this to deepen the colour and darken the image. I think it looks much better. It's more 'cinematic', but I've not gone all Christopher Nolan and made everything too dark to see and all the sound too hard to hear. It was one of those changes that I sort of stumbled on, thought it would be a good idea and then spent hours doing it. I had to adjust each image every time it's called by renpy, as I didn't want a blanket rule in place in case it wasn't right for some of them (which it isn't). I did setup blanket rules for the side images and the galleries though.

For the next update I'm aiming to do Isabella's slave raid follow-up event and the check-in with Emelia and Lilly. I say this every time, but I'm hoping these won't take too long as they are quite controlled and specific events. I already have all of Isabella's & Emelia's backgrounds done, it's taking less time to make NSFW scenes and the quality is improved with the new tools and there are aren't big variable choices that can send you on multiple versions of the same event. So... I'll see but I think maybe 3 weeks for this one.

Some screens from Zara's added event added this week.

Development Update 12/10/2026

It's a little early for the update this week, but I have my final presentation/exam thing for my qualification on Wednesday, so tomorrow will be spent mostly on prep for that.

I did get some time on Friday and today to progress things and the Cartographer's Guild mission is now done. Well, mostly done. I do need to do some sprite checks and manual sprite edits. I need to go through and setup variables to record the specifics of the choices, I also need to add all the image and video assets to the galleries. After that I need to do the debrief with Zara. I'm going to change how that comes about, using the messenger feature in the notebook to unlock the debrief. This is partly because it will introduce the player to the idea that the notebook carries messages, and partly because I made the messenger system in the update before I stopped and started the rebuild. So I've forgotten how it works! I want to go back in and refresh myself on it. I'll also have to convert all the image assets to .webp format to cut size.

This week I completed the speluncid village tour content and built and scripted in the Emelia tap overload scene, it comes in somewhere around 4-5 minutes of animations. I've shown a bit more of village life and their Lodeshine crafting this time around. While the story is the same, I've tweaked sections, added bits and improved stuff as I go. So with all the new image/video assets, the diary entries + the amendments it should hopefully be enjoyable to play through it once more. To put it in context, the original version had 72 sprites of Emelia and 25 480p framepack or 720p Kling 1.6 animations, totalling around 3.75 minutes. The new version has 97 images of Emelia and 36 animations, totalling around 9.75 minutes of animation - all 720p or 1080p and done on LTX2.3, WAN3, SeeDance 2 or SeeDance 2.5. Then there is all the extra speluncid animations and images on top of that. So, while it's "the same" it really isn't. Plus, back when I made the first version of this, I couldn't do images where the characters are created natively within the scene, which I now can and that adds a lot to it I think. Anyway, if you are playing the remake you will see what I mean when this goes out.

I've also gone back and corrected a few minor errors and rebuilt one of Isabella's sex scene animations. I realised that in one clip I had somehow missed that her toes turn into fingers. So... that's nightmare fuel. I decided to test out SeeDance2 2 on it's replacement and it did a pretty good job. I'm still hopeful I can get this update done by or over the weekend.

I've seen/had some requests for translations. I know there is an Italian version knocking around that someone kindly does for the Italian VN community. It had crossed my mind to see if I could turn out an AI translated version. AI translation seems to be much better than older 'machine translation'. It's quite nice to do it with AI because it understands what is code and what is text, so I can get it to ignore the code and only translate the text. It's still a bit fiddly because I have to manage version control for multiple versions. Someone has kindly volunteered to help produce a German translation. I can't promise to keep that version officially updated, but there may well be a German version out soon enough. The problem with the AI translation is that Gemini (which is what I'm using in this case, but I suspect it will be the same for all of the main ones) won't translate the sex scenes. So those are being done by a kindly volunteer (who is also sense checking what Gemini has done for the non sex scene translations). As long as I have a kindly volunteer, then I should be able to produce a German version.

I don't have any screenshots to show this week because there are boobs everywhere. So... enjoy these bonus pictures of some of the less well represented characters as far as bonus content goes so far...
