I've talked about Maggie a bit previously in the character intro, but you might have noticed that it was fairly sparse on details. That was certainly intentional; Maggie is a very important character and deserves a little bit more effort in outlining. While I think I would prefer most of you to get to know her while playing, there are some things I think should be brought up in advance as I expect some... controversy.
Now, it's nothing truly bad, and I think many will like her, but I know historically from web novels and VNs that her type of character tends to be unappealing to certain groups. As such, I wanted to talk about why she is like that and more broadly how the story might not appeal to someone seeking something different. Maggie in her inner dialogue form
Maggie is a genius, a fact she will let you know... repeatedly. When she has a plan, she will do anything in her power, moral or not, to see it through. She is a whizz at biology, mechanics,
and whatever else I need her to solve with magic science; the one thing she sucks at, obviously, is interpersonal skills. She's also very... uninhibited sexually, though her experience is basically entirely theoretical. Like everyone else in the world, she's a virgin; though she's a got a bit of a head start in the self-love department.
What's her problem exactly? It's less about her, and more about that fact that she is not the player character... but has a strong influence on the flow of the game. She often tells MC what to do because, ultimately, he would not know to do it himself. MC goes along with her because he has little choice. For those who seek to self-insert into the character, this might very well be off-putting. I have little doubt someone is going to be calling the MC beta, and demanding to be able to kick her to the curb on day one.
The thing is, all of those things that people will be angry about in Maggie are necessary. Maggie is an omnipresent force in the story; she is simultaneously the deuteragonist and the Greek chorus. The MC might be older, but he's a person of that world. He spent the first 30 years unaware of sex or how the city really functioned. Maggie, on the other hand, is closer to the audience in that she is aware of what is "missing" from this environment. Likewise she is the one truly motivated to change it. MC can't lead the change because he has no idea where he is going. It's difficult to empathize with a character who has different values than you do unless you have a means to bridge the gap. MC as a man of the world sees hugging between strangers as lewd behavior; Maggie, and presumably you the player, find the very idea ridiculous.
"But that means Maggie is more like the main character!", I hear you shout into my mind. I disagree with this. Much like Ismail and Ahab (or Kyon and Haruhi for the weebs out there), there can be a divide between the one who drives the plot and the point of view. And that isn't to say that MC here is a passive force, either. My closest model for MC is Arthur Dent from the Hitchhiker's Guide series. Originally 100% ignorant of the underlying truth of the world, it's through his eyes we see things become clear. And as he lives there for a while he becomes more accustomed and more proactive. Likewise, the same will happen with MC as he begins to acclimate to the insanity and more people begin to depend on him... especially with oncoming fatherhood. Maggie herself may not be as confident as she seems initially, and as you come to know her better you'll start to see the cracks in her "in control" facade.
I'd like the two of them to grow over time, as you come to know them. I do, actually, want you to like them both. From my perspective, they are both a part of the true Main Character. Maggie being the id, and MC being the super ego. You as the player take the part of their collective ego and drive the flow of the game. You can't decide who they are, truly, but you can come along on the wacky ride and hopefully come to feel closer to them. That's my hope anyway.
It's also important to note that despite her importance to the story, she's not exactly the romantic lead. That role belongs to... well, I'll pick that up in another post.
Stella is a singer and the former front-woman of the recent sensation The Shooting Stars. Stella has loved music and singing for her entire life, spending hours writing lyrics in her notebook. While Stella loves to sing, she's also somewhat of an introvert, preferring intimate settings where she feels she can make a deeper connection with those listening to her.
Her husband is the current guitarist and bandleader of The Shooting Stars. His entire life he has dreamed of being famous in Nede City. After Stella quit right as the band was about to be signed, he built up a large amount of resentment for her, accusing her of abandoning their dream. Now he spends all of his time doing shows, or interviews, and is excited to be soon touring the settlements. There are also rumors abound that he might be trying to get close to the band's new singer.
While Stella had no issues, her husband got them rejected for the simple fact that he skipped his interview appointment: twice.
Lisa is interior decorator and consultant, having worked in the field for 8 years. Her personality is meticulous and though she is a generally happy and cheerful woman she can often rub people the wrong way by pointing out all of their imperfections.
Her husband was a former client, a businessman who generally is unfazed by anything. Like many couples, the two married purely for reproductive purposes choosing each other primarily for their continuous proximity. The two live in separate homes.
Lisa was rejected for behavioral reasons, having annoyed the interviewer by spending 60% of the interview commenting on his look.
Megan has never worked a proper day in her life. Although her parents were not personally the wealthiest, her family connections on her father's side and a doting grandfather gave her the life of a socialite. Her only occasional effort is fashion modeling, which solely on her family's name tends to be found in adverts
Her husband is a 63 year-old former councilman who has no children of his own. With no heirs, Megan stands to inherit everything on his passing. Her husband is not in the least unaware of this fact, but it just happy to have nice eye-candy to look at in his final days.
Megan herself passed the test easily, it was her husband who was rejected on the grounds of his age. Although Prodigio wouldn't have used his sample anyway, they do take into account the health of the father as a factor in their ability to raise a child. This result was considered a 50% chance, so there will be no surprise on the side of the couple.
The game takes place an unknown number of years into the future. Human reproduction is tightly controlled by a single entity called Prodigio, which also unofficially acts as the center of power for the entirety of humanity. They choose who can, and who cannot breed and when. All reproduction is now carried out with in vitro fertilization, a process that is now heavily automated and completely outside the knowledge of the general populace. Indeed, not only do people not know how it works, they also have no knowledge of how it should work. Even worse, everyone is incapable of it.
Everyone, that is, except for our protagonist. While others, from the time of birth until death, treat their penis as only a vulgar organ meant to relieve themselves of waste, he has a particular quirk: at various times his penis can... grow big. And hard. This kind of function is unheard of in society, and due to Prodigio's strict but completely non-public breeding controls, anyone showing any manner of "aberration" is shunned by wider society as undesirable. And so our protagonist hides his condition in shame, reaching the age of 30 without finding love or companionship.
This all changes one day when he is hit with a sudden pain in his groin. Unable to bear the pain, he reluctantly visits a clinic with the hopes that they will keep his malady a secret. What he finds there, is a particularly attractive young doctor whose manner of dress and vulnerable posture stirs his imagination. Sadly, this triggers his condition, and his aberration is revealed. However, rather than be shocked and horrified, she is... excited? It turns out that he is exactly what she is looking for.
While Prodigio exudes an aura of absolute control and understanding, it turns out that they themselves have little idea how to operate the technology they have complete control over. Over time, the genetic modifications that led to the elimination of libido in humanity have actually ruined the fertility in most men. Now all children are in fact born from an ever shrinking genetic pool which is only accelerating the decline of humanity. The doctor who used to be a researcher at Prodogio suggested that the only solution was to try and reverse the process of eliminating libido. But the company, worried it would then lose it's power, rejected her proposal and kicked her out of the company. She had thought her cause was lost, but then MC appears and brings with himself the solution: traditional fertilization.
Her new plan is simple: using a drug she developed that can over time awaken the female libido they will target women who were, for whatever reason, recently rejected from Prodigio for breeding. The protagonist will use whatever method he can to get close to the women and seduce them into traditional sex, an act they are 100% unaware of. His targets range from the wives of famous rock stars, a lesbian couple, and even... his own childhood friend?
With the Doc by his side to guide him (whether he likes it or not), our hero will venture forth to love, to breed, and to lay the seeds of our future!
Ok, so that probably sounds ridiculous, right? A world where even the mothers are virgins, and every man other than the protagonist is permanently incapable of sex. It has to be a joke, right? Well, yes. Yes it is. Or was, I should say.
What started as a joke about the ultimate anti-netorare harem game basically evolved into this monstrosity. It's a game with romance, corruption, lots and lots of pregnancy... and no netorare in sight. The game features a fairly large and broad cast of characters to seduce and expand MC's progeny.
The game is split into Chapters, four in total. Each chapter takes place over a couple of months game time and contain a few new targets to choose from. Although you can choose to pursue the girls or not (but there is a minimum each chapter), you must complete their plot before the end of the chapter, or abandon them forever. The time between each chapter is another few months game time: this allows the development of pregnancies, and enables the player to see the progress.
Each chapter itself is split into multiple parts. These parts are the basic "full update" of the game, taking between 6-8 weeks to complete. Each full update contains a number of side events, either for fun or to progress the plot line for targets, and is capped off by an expansion of the main story arc.
Splitting those even further you have Alpha and Beta releases. Alpha releases are every two weeks for high tier subscribers, and contain in progress work towards the next full update. Some of this content might be incomplete and using scratch visuals. If the audio goal is unlocked, these versions will not yet feature the new audio.
Beta releases on the other hand are fully polished, yet still incomplete version of the full update. Every month will either include a full update, or a beta release. Beta will have polished art, audio (assuming we hit the goal), and will be bug tested as best as possible.
The question you might have it, should you play the alpha/beta releases, or wait? That should ultimately be up to you and the degree of incompleteness you can tolerate. If you are worried about major spoilers, I should note that the main story update will always come with the full update, and will not appear int he alpha and beta releases. This is to keep everyone on the same footing regarding major spoilers. Instead they will contain the side events like updates for target girls, one-off events, and VR events (all of which will be discussed in another post). The hope is that you will play the incremental updates because you want to contribute, not because you feel compelled to.
Michael Chambers (henceforth referred to as "MC") is the main player character of the game. Although on paper, while not a "peak" choice, there is very little that you could find fault in. He is decent looking, is in good shape, has a good education and good job, he even recently came into owning his own home after his Grandfather passed away. In this society there is no reason that MC should be single at his age.
However, MC has a dark secret, one that only a couple people know which, if it were know publicly, would have him labeled as a pariah or possibly even locked away. You see, MC has a peculiar problem: sometimes, and with seemingly little reason, his penis... the thing men use to urinate... grows... bigger. Search as he might, MC has never been able to find a cause for this, though he is worried about ever informing a professional for fear of the consequences. In this world where even the slightest physical deformity can have you branded an aberrant, MC's condition, especially one in such a filthy and disgusting place, would doubtlessly end up having him labeled a monster.
Even worse, the condition tends to pop up in the most inopportune times, which has lead him to avoid getting close to people (especially women). As such he has lived his adult life in general solitude, save for his own close family.
Little does our dear MC know, his condition may very well hold the key to the future of mankind.
Maggie Hopkins was once a child prodigy. Gaining knowledge rapidly from a very young age, Maggie became a researcher at Prodigio at the age of only 8. Together with her father and mentor, the late Laurence Hopkins, Maggie made large strides in reclaiming lost knowledge of the forebears. However, her reckless behavior and refusal to follow basic guidelines led to her being ousted from the company several years ago, along with her assistant Cotton. She now works as a clinical urologist with Amber acting as her nurse.
But there are rumors abound that strange phenomenon have been occurring around her little clinic. As the rumors compound, it might be too much for Prodigio to continue to ignore...
Alex and MC were the very best of friends for many years. As next-door neighbors, they spent large chunks of time together. With how close they were, both of their families thought it was only a matter of time before they were married and started a family of their own. Indeed, on the very cusp of adulthood the two embarked on the transition from friend to snuggle buddies.
But unfortunately, in a moment of warmth and intimacy, MC's condition reared its ugly head. Alex was clearly shaken, and ran out of the house crying. Soon afterwards rumors of MC being an aberrant began to circulate among their peer group. Feeling hurt and betrayed, MC cut off contact with Alex. Alex herself never tried to contact him in turn. Throughout their adulthood, other than brief pleasantries shared in passing, neither had much to say to each other. For her part, Alex threw herself into her work. Just as she dreamed as a child, she became a mechanist for one of the largest firms (outside of Prodigio).
However, one year ago MC received a surprising invitation from her mother: Alex was quitting her job and getting married to a wealthy socialite, and he was invited along with his family. With the desire to put the past behind him, he went to attend the wedding and give his congratulations, but even after he was left with a pit in his stomach. He was not sure if it was because of the somber change in her personality, or the realization that she was now a wife and soon-to-be mother of another man's children.
One of the things that is incredibly controversial in indie adult games is the inclusion of sound. Some people never play with the sound at all, some claim that it's impossible to enjoy without it.
Personally I have found that audio in adult games is a mixed bag. Many devs include it just to check a box and it get repetitive and grating, however some really spend the time to get right. I really don't want to be in the category of the former if I were to include audio, but it's important to remember that the latter is a sizable investment of time and money, and if most people end up muting it compulsively, that investment is essentially wasted.
So, I'd like to ask early on about your personal preferences and priorities. Even if the response is positive I probably won't add audio into the first release, instead adding it in over time, but I would still like to gauge interest early on so that I can plan accordingly. It's also possible I add it as a goal, so that at least the extra cost is covered.
