The Eyes That Wear Her

The forest only breathes when she stops.
She stands between the black trees, pale as bone, the moonlight sliding off her skin like it doesn’t want to touch her. The armor never rests. Red eyes open and close across the metal plates in slow, wet blinks.
Black veins pulse beneath the surface, climbing her thighs, wrapping her ribs, always hungry for more of her.
She doesn’t remember the name she had before the armor claimed her. She only knows the eyes want to be fed, and the forest is full of things that still have names.
Something moves in the fog behind her. The armor’s eyes all turn at once.
She smiles, just a little.
The forest holds its breath again.
