She Still Opens the Door

The villa has been empty for a century, or so the village says. The gates are chained, the windows dark, and no one climbs the drive after dusk.
Yet the candles are lit again.
She waits at the foot of the staircase, where the marble has cracked and the gilt has flaked away. The uniform is the same one she wore the night the house went quiet: black silk, white lace, a bow at the throat. Above the waist she is almost solid. Below it she thins, stockings dissolving into the fog that pools on the steps, until there is nothing left to stand on.
Her hand is open.
“You’ve come at last,” she says, and her voice is only a little colder than the air. “The others always turn back at the gate. Please—don’t leave me alone...”
Behind her the chandelier stirs, though there is no wind. The fog climbs one step higher. And the door you came through is no longer where you left it.
