Ginkgo Hour

The ginkgo trees always turned first. One week they were green. The next, the whole avenue was a tunnel of gold.
She walked it every afternoon after class, coat open, scarf a little too warm, boots clicking on the stones. Leaves stuck to the path like coins nobody bothered to pick up. Wind found her twin tails and sent them drifting, and for a second the street looked like it was made only for her.
She told herself she was just taking the long way home. She wasn’t. This was the hour when the light was kind, when the city felt paused, when a girl with glasses and red hair could walk through autumn and pretend the season had been arranged for her alone.
By the time she reached the far gate, her pockets were full of fallen leaves she didn’t remember gathering.
