Daughter of the Drowned City

They say the ruins still breathe.
Far below the last reach of sunlight, where the water turns the color of old sapphires, she waits among broken towers and sleeping stone. Hair like spilled ink. Eyes the same blue as the shafts of light that never quite reach her. A crown of seashells and living kelp is all she wears of the surface world.
The kraken in her blood remembers what the city used to be. The girl in her still listens for voices that have been silent for a thousand years.
Tonight the jellyfish drift closer than usual.
She smiles, just a little, and the deep smiles back.
