Horns Over District 9

The rain never stopped in District Nine. It just changed color when the ads woke up.
She walked the wet street like she owned the voltage. Red skin. Amber eyes. Horns curled back under a pair of glowing visors that still hummed from the last scan. Circuit-light traced her cheekbone, her collarbone, the seam of the suit that kept her together after the last upgrade.
People moved out of her way without looking at her face. That was the point. In this city, beauty was a warning label.
Someone in the crowd whispered a name she no longer used. She didn’t turn. The collar at her throat pulsed once, cyan, and the streetlights answered.
Tonight she wasn’t hunting. Tonight she was remembering what it felt like to be seen — and deciding whether that was still a risk she could afford.
