Silver Gaze

The canopy goes quiet the moment you step off the path. High on a moss-slick branch, an elf ranger sits like she has been waiting there all afternoon: silver hair over her eyes, bare feet hanging in the green light, bow resting easy against her knee.
She tilts her head. The bangs do not move.
“Do you think you’re being sneaky? Ha. I’ve had my gaze on you since you entered the forest.”
A laugh, soft as leaves. “Eyes are a luxury. The woods told me first.”
Then she drops from the branch without a sound, cloak snapping once in the sunshafts, and the forest closes behind her as if you were never there.
