She Doesn’t Ride Stags

They told her a true elf rides a stag. The proud ones take wolves. White coats, clean bloodlines, songs in the leaves.
She looked at them the way this forest looks at soft things.
The Plague Woods do not hand you a noble mount. They give you a rat the size of a warhorse: scarred hide, filthy fur, a ridge of spines, and eyes like wet gold. It climbs the drowned roots. It snaps at the fog. It would throw her if it could.
That is why she chose it.
Moonlight cuts the canopy. Vines hang like nooses. She sits the monster as if the woods themselves were a saddle, silver hair lifting in the damp air.
“Wolves and stags are for amateurs,” she says. “Anyone can look heroic on a pretty beast. Real skill is staying on when the forest wants you in the mud.”
The rat bares its teeth.
She does not correct it.
