Dev Log #5 | Personal stuff update
Another two weeks, another Dev Log. Things have been very eventful for me recently, but let's just jump into it.
Notes on the progress:
- I made the sprites for the characters that will show up in the character menu, to those who use GameStoryLog - I also added the characters with their new sprites onto the site
- 20 out of 24 scenes edited in the Prologue
- I started visually mapping out how the renders for all scenes will look. This is particularly important for certain scenes, as they will require very careful crafting. For these scenes, I also plan to do a lot of post work to achieve the desired visual effects, since they're meant to be very impactful (I've been doing lots of technical stuff, learning and researching various software when it comes to visuals, which I'll talk about some more in the future)
- As usual, I've been doing lore work, although I've been feeling a little stuck on certain aspects that I'd ideally want to nail down before the Prologue, even if they wouldn't even get mentioned yet. Nevertheless, there's a very interesting aspect of my universe-building that's making good progress. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever done but it's extremely satisfying to see it come together, but unfortunately I can't say more than that for now.

Those of you on our Discord server, you might've read my message about how one day my PC died and refused to start after repeated power outages forcefully shut it down multiple times. Long story short, after 11 hours of troubleshooting I managed to fix everything but it was insanely stressful. While I wouldn't have lost any of my work on Aether as I make sure things are backed up, I had no access to my accounts without my PC (fixed since then) and I really didn't want development to halt for an unknown period of time. Nevertheless, things are fixed and I basically only lost my custom overclock for my CPU - which I forgot the exact numbers for so I'm doing safe testing while working.

Some personal stuff
TLDR: (Just so people don't misunderstand the upcoming section) Nothing bad is happening, I'm not abandoning anything, I'm not putting anything on hiatus or anything of the sort. I'll simply have to reevaluate how I put my time into working on Aether so I can make sure development is not slowing down due to new personal circumstances. This project means the world to me, hence I prioritize it above as many things as possible in my life.
I'm in the process of switching jobs as I was let go at my previous workplace due to downsizing happening (the life of people working in positions that AI is slowly taking over). Through some connections I managed to land an almost instant offer though - so no anxiety over unpaid bills. However, here is the thing - my previous workplace was incredibly open to people working from home, I went into the office once a week most of the time, and it was only 25 minutes away from me. It was also something I was very comfortable in, which meant I could do my job way quicker than normal, giving me some extra time to put into my passion.
Unfortunately, the company I'll be starting with soon is working on a 4+1 basis, meaning I have to be in the office 4 days a week and I get 1 day from home. The place is a ~2 hour commute away from me and I'll be working in an environment that will be extremely new and challenging for me in many aspects. There are a bunch of additional personal things and problems that I'd rather not get into (life just being life and pain becoming a friend), but the point is that it'll be exhausting as fuck and I'll have less time and opportunity to work on Aether.
As I said before, this doesn't mean anything awful, and I'll try to come up with solutions for how I can get extra work done whenever I can so I'm able to keep to my original timeline as much as possible. I have several ideas lined up, so no need for concern, I'm not clueless, I know exactly what's going on and also how any news like this may seem, nobody wants development to slow down, especially me. I can't predict exactly what my progress will look like with this new job, but I'm familiar with sleepless nights so I'm also ready to tackle this the hard way.
Thanks for reading!
