Dev log #1 | Posting schedule

Hi everyone!

It's been an exciting time going public with Aether, finally showing a glimpse of this passion project of mine to the world.

First off, I want to say thank you to everyone who has already expressed their interest and is curious to see where we go from here - it means the world to me! I can't wait to get the Prologue released, so you can get a taste for what this dark journey has to offer!

What posts to expect

When it comes to updates on the progress of development: I'll be posting dev logs every other week, so if you're interested in following the progress closely, make sure to check in when I post them.
I'm planning on doing more type of posts and more (special) renders for you all to enjoy in the future, but more on that when we get to it later.
I know everyone is eager to see the love interests, so: I'll be introducing the love interests in the coming two weeks, I might actually split things up a bit and do one half first and then the other half with the next dev log in two weeks time.

On that note - who is the girl in the render?
Meet - Ella, one of the main LIs in Aether. If you want to learn some more about her, you'll have to wait bit until the introductions!

Dev log #1

This dev log will be an introductory report on what's still to be done for the first release and where I am currently with development.

Writing:
The Prologue's script is written and it's in the editing phase right now. The word count for it currently sits at just over 30k words. However, this includes some notes I have and also about 4k words from scenes that I may cut out. While I don't want to rush with the story and let you ease into this world, I realize that I must strike a balance, so potentially 3-4 smaller scenes are getting cut from my original plan for the Prologue. Overall – I'm expecting 20k-25k words, which would mean about ~1.5 hours of content (depending on reading speed).

Rendering:
I've prepared several maps already, with props and extra stuff, so when I get to rendering, I don’t need to bother with those. I've also made two fully custom-made maps as I couldn’t find something that I was happy with (I made them inside the game, and to this day I'm thinking I should've probably done it inside Unity – bit of a mistake there, but water under the bridge). Nevertheless, rendering hasn’t officially started yet, I'll start once I'm close to finishing editing the script.

Animations:
There will be one animated lewd scene in the Prologue and while I've been equally anxious and excited about making it myself, I may reach out to some very talented animators and ask for their help.
For a really long time I've been trying to figure out how custom animations are made and what technique I'd want to use when I create one, but I think I may require more practice to bring you a quality I'm proud of. Still, I want the lewd scenes to feel really impactful and for things happening during the act to feel logical and in-character, so I'll do my best whether it's someone else's animation or mine for it to be a fun (and hot) experience.

Coding:
Coding will really only start for the release once I have the script finished and start having enough renders so I can put things together. This will also put me in a position to start testing things out and see if everything works as intended.

Menus and UI design:
Before the release of the Prologue, I'll design my own menus and UI so it's not a bare-bones renpy screen you'll be staring at. There are a couple of functions that I'll need to code and also to design the UI for too.
  • One is a character screen with basic information on the characters.

  • And the other is the "Book of Lore" mechanic for those who want to know more about the world or if they missed/forgot the meaning of something and want to quickly check it.

Audio:
Aether aims to be an immersive and atmospheric experience, which means music and sounds are very important for me to get right. Overall, I'll highly recommend all audio to be enabled.
For music, I'm putting a great emphasis on making sure the music and the tone of the narrative fit together, especially in impactful scenes. I have several tracks picked for various scenes and I have the stylistic direction picked that I'll be going for.
Regarding sounds, I'll have to get more of them, but expect sounds to be an important part of the immersive experience I aim to deliver – so much so, that if you're playing without sounds you may miss some stuff or a scene may seem weird or awkward.

That about wraps it up for today! Thank you very much again for your interest this early and thank you for reading all my yapping.
