Thunder Over the Red Wastes

The storm rolled in without mercy.
Across the shattered highway of the old world, where rusted cars sank slowly into the dunes and power lines hummed like dying ghosts, she rode.
They called her Ashen Vale, scavenger, courier, survivor. The desert had taken kingdoms, swallowed cities, erased names. But it had not taken her.
Lightning forked across the blackened sky, illuminating the skeletal towers on the horizon. The wind howled, lifting sand and embers into a burning spiral around her horse’s pounding stride. Raiders wouldn’t travel in weather like this. Machines wouldn’t either.
But she would.
Strapped beneath her cloak was a relic, a cracked fusion core salvaged from the ruins of the western grid. Enough power to light a settlement for a year. Enough hope to start a war.
She leaned forward in the saddle, whispering to her horse as thunder split the sky.
The storm was coming.
And she intended to outride it.
