As White As Snow

(This is a tale in the imaginative eyes of a child playing with a stuffed animal during a snowstorm.)

It was a snowy Christmas morning and I ran downstairs to my Christmas tree, immediately darting for the present labeled with my name. It was wrapped in a mostly-white wrapping paper with blue snowflakes, tied up in a golden ribbon. I eagerly ripped open the present box, pulling out an Arctic Fox plushie. It had a gleaming pair of plastic amber eyes and two pointed ears with fluff in them. Taking an immediate liking to the plushie, I named her Snowy because her fur was as delicate and white as the snow that fell just outside my window. I ran to my parents holding the stuffed fox in my arms and hugged both of them, thanking them for the gift they had given me.

“That’s not all, darling, but we’ll have to get your main present from our company,” my mom said before my dad added, “We’ve spent weeks on it so we can’t wait to show it to you!”

Since both my parents worked in the same company which produces costumes and various outfits for others, I was enthusiastic about what they had prepared for me. After a hearty breakfast, I stared through the windows of my bedroom as my parents’ car rolled out of the house into the snow-covered road, watching the red lights at the back of the car fade into the distance. As soon as they were out of the vicinity, a strong snowstorm blew through, turning the visibility of the outside to near zero. Being a mere child, I was worried that they might not return and hugged Snowy tightly, sobbing and internally panicking.

Out of nowhere, the sensation of warm, fluffy fur brushed against my face. The Arctic Fox plushie’s tail was moving on its own accord, wiping and soaking up my tears. “Wh-wha… Snowy?” I questioned in disbelief, trying to peel open my eyes amidst tears and sniffles as she licked at my cheeks with her pastel pink fabric tongue to clear up my remaining tears. “Don’t cry. I’m here for you,” she said with a soothing voice, almost like how my mom would console me. “They’ll return by lunchtime. Meanwhile, you can play with me!” Snowy hopped up and down, performing a play bow like an energetic canine who wanted to run about.

With a cheeky smile, I gave chase to Snowy as she became a flash of white, appearing like a zooming cloud around my home. I giggled everywhere she led me to the house, eventually catching up to her and cornering the Arctic Fox plushie in the kitchen, scooping her up from the floor and cradling her in my arms. “You caught me! Hee hee!” Snowy laughed for a few seconds before her expression changed, raising her snout into the air and sniffing. “What’s wrong, Snowy?” I asked, lifting my head to where she was staring, quickly spotting a jar of bite-sized cookies sitting on the kitchen countertop. “You want… a cookie?”

I could feel her stuffed tail shaking rapidly, her head nodding while her eyes were still fixated on the sweet treats in the jar. “Yes! Let’s share, shall we?” I raised an eyebrow at her as I lifted the lid of the jar to retrieve the cookies, offering one to her. She gently bit it and held the cookie with her mouth, bringing it to one side to eat it. As I indulged in a few cookies, she was still taking swift nibbles at the one cookie I gave her, eventually working her way through the whole piece. “How are you eating, Snowy? You’re just a plushie.” The Arctic Fox plushie licked the crumbs off its paws and turned to me with a wink.

“Not just a plushie! A magical plushie!” She corrected me, wagging her tail happily. “See?” She opened her mouth wide, showing nothing but a stuffed, reddish interior with a pink tongue, but no traces of cookies or crumbs stuck in the fabric. “Well, I’m full and ready to do some more exploring!” The Arctic Fox plushie said, lying on her back and contentedly patting her belly with her paws as I closed the lid. “Hang on, lemme wash my hands first!”

After rinsing my hands in water and soap to clear the crumbs and oil from my fingers, I turned back just in time to see her leaping off the counter and poking her snout into various rooms of the house. Soon, she found her way to a wooden shelf of books in my mom’s room, tilting her head at the various sizes and colors of books. “These are my mom’s. She loves reading fantasy stories, especially ones with animals in them.” Snowy hopped onto the top of the shelf and glanced around the room where posters of anthropomorphic animal mages, archers, and knights posed in their full glory.

“Your mom’s interesting!” She squeaked, taking a graceful leap from the top of the shelf to the ground beside my feet. “Onto the next room!”

Unlike before, the Arctic Fox plushie hesitated and slowed down, her ears twitching a little and facing another direction. Taking a few more paces forward, we arrived at my dad’s room where everything seemed like a typical bedroom. Snowy sniffed before pawing at the wardrobe, one place my dad forbids me to touch while he was away. Taking caution, I pulled open the wardrobe doors slowly to find many of my dad’s costumes, from animals to superhero ones. I sighed and explained, “My mom and dad love to be in costume, but they share the space to store them here. I’m not supposed to be here while they’re away…”

“Don’t worry! I promise not to touch anything!” Snowy reassured with a smile. “But something is making my snoot tingle…” She then sniffed and her nose found her way to an Arctic Fox fursuit with some sky-blue patches on parts of the suit. “Oh, that’s my dad’s favorite animal character he named ‘Frostbite.’ He says it’s very expensive, so I’m not allowed to wear it, even when he’s around.” She sat and turned her snout to look at me, offering, “Why not lemme make one for you? It’s gonna be like Frostbite, but one your size!”

“You can do that?” My eyes opened wide at her proposition.

“Yes! Remember, I’m not a magical plushie for nothing. Just give me a-” Snowy sneezed, causing a
a temporary cloud of fine snow to puff up around me. Once it dispersed, I found myself dressed in some sort of Arctic Fox outfit. Swiveling my body to take a look at my father’s bedroom mirror, I was in a fur-covered costume with a fluffy tail and some sky-blue markings, just like Frostbite. My hands and feet were not covered, but I did not mind. The hood of the outfit had sewn on white pointed ears with a dark-gray hue on each tip, animated eyes and a cute triangular nose. I could pull down or raise the hood freely, but I chose to have it raised over my forehead to complete the look.

Being very comfortable in my new warm and fluffy outfit, drowsiness washed over me as I rubbed my eyes and yawned. I could feel Snowy tapping both her forepaws on my shins, gaining my attention as I dipped my head to tend to her. “You should take a nap. You’re tired. Let’s go to your bedroom!” The Arctic Fox plushie bolted out of my dad’s room towards my bedroom, leaving me trudging after her with the fluffy tail swinging side to side on every step I took.

Upon entering my room, my eyes almost popped out of my head as I saw a giant plush Arctic Fox in place of my bed. “Snowy? What happened to my bed?” I asked before coming to a random guess. “Did you eat it?” The now giant plushie shook her head, but did not reply to me verbally. Instead, her tail swayed a little, holding back her full excitement to prevent herself from sweeping me off my feet, only ticking me through the Arctic Fox costume on me. Lying on her back, she patted her fuzzy belly with a paw, wordlessly requesting me to lie on her.

Since I did not have a bed anymore, I treated Snowy like a bed and clambered onto her, sprawling with a sigh onto her plush body. Surprisingly, her belly was fluffier, softer, and squisher than my original bed, like I was lying on a warm cloud. I then curled up on her body, burying my face into her fur and smiling as I prepared to sleep. To make it more snuggly, she wrapped her tail around my body like a blanket, lightly pressing on my body like a weighted comforter. With both of us smiling in unison, we fell asleep together through the fiercest of winter storms.

A few hours later, I awoke to my parents calling for me from outside my room, but to my disappointment, I was back in my old bed and normal clothes, hugging Snowy close to my cheeks. Sitting up and shaking the groggy feeling from waking away, I held the Arctic Fox plushie in front of me and whispered, “Thank you, Snowy, for the costume and for letting me sleep on you.” I nuzzled the plushie and saw her tail wagging, but one thing was still waiting for me. My parents had made something for me that took them weeks, and my excitement was brimming once again.

Holding Snowy in my arms, I reunited with my parents in the living room and what I saw made me smile from ear to ear and my eyes glimmer with joy. My father had brought me the same foxy outfit that Snowy had fitted me in earlier with every fine detail of the suit. “Surprise! We got you a tailor-made Little Frostbite outfit! Since you love it when I wear my Frostbite suit, I got one your size so that you could be like me! Heh heh!” My dad said, getting into his character voice and posing towards the end. “Oh honey…” My mom sighed at my dad’s antics as usual, leaving all three of us laughing for a bit.

I embraced both my parents for the gift and quickly changed into the Frostbite outfit in my bedroom, emerging as a cute Arctic Fox with Snowy in my arms. I happily pranced around the house with Snowy in hand, to my parents’ entertainment, running through the corridor and letting the fox tail bounce behind me. With both the new costume and Arctic Fox plushie as white as snow falling outside, I had the best Christmas day any child could have ever wanted.
