Hotsatyr-15
This is the third in a series of illustrations that will expand the lore of Hotsatyr at each solstice and equinox, revealing more of their untamed world as the seasons turn! 🍃
In a month's time, it will be the Autumn Equinox, the time that marks the balance of day and night before the winter darkness overtakes the light.
I have many things to share about this illustration, so let us take it step by step.
Who is the character?
He is Nuada Airgetlám (“He of the Silver Arm”), King of the Tuatha and father of Tadg (the Tuath who frees Hotsatyr from the fairy circle).

Where is he?
Nuada is in the Sídhe, the hidden kingdom created by the Tuatha after the arrival of humans in Ireland. Known also as the Hollow Hills, it lies beneath the earth, invisible to mortal eyes unless one knows precisely where to look. Within, the Tuatha have recreated a near-perfect reflection of the surface world they left behind.

What troubles him?
Once the valiant leader of the Tuatha of the Four Misty Cities, Nuada is a monarch revered by allies and feared by foes. Yet his retreat into the Sídhe weighs heavily on him. To him, it is a silent admission of defeat to the humans who now dwell upon lands that were once his.

What are those statues?
They are ancient Tuatha tombs. Though the Tuatha age far more slowly than mortals (granting them lifespans that border on immortality) they are not invulnerable. Death can claim them through rare, but known, means.

And the sword?
It is one of the four sacred treasures of the Tuatha, brought from the Four Ancient Cities. This sword, Fraganach, hails from Findias, the eastern city. Once drawn, none can escape it, and when its blade rests at a neck, it compels the truth from whoever stands before it.

Why is he unclothed?
The Tuatha share a deep bond with the natural world. In moments of profound meditation, they set aside all material possessions, to commune wholly with the essence of nature.

Why does he bear a silver hand?
This is a tale of many turns, but in brief: Nuada lost his hand in battle. Among them, a king must be physically whole, and so the injury cost him his throne. Yet the greatest blacksmith among his people forged for him a hand of enchanted silver, restoring both his strength and his right to rule.
