I'd imagine Zeke tends to find Ruby surrounded by strangers who are trying to pick her up or flirt with her. He makes it clear for them to back off when he holds her close by slinging her on his side to show that she's taken. While it's something that he does in the intent of protecting her from lustful predators, Ruby can find the notion awkward between them and make her erupt with feelings she's afraid to question.
