Politics and Censorship:How Legal Games like Straight!? are getting Removed and Banned
Hi.
Over the past few years I'm increasingly spending more and more time fighting websites, legislation, and the gradual shrill crescendo of Puritan screeching. This isn't a forecast for an approaching storm, it's already here. And while I recognize that projects like this are sometimes a way to distance ourselves from harsh realities, I'm troubling you with this today because our "break" from reality has now been directly targeted.
Recent Timeline
2024:
Patreon revised adult content rules due to Visa/Mastercard standards, censoring tons of content.
March 15, 2024:
Gumroad bans majority of adult content citing payment providers Stripe and PayPal.
April 25, 2024:
Pixiv changes allowed content based on regional use of US and the UK
July 16, 2025:
Steam quietly removes a number of adult themed games from their store (they didn't do an actual press release but you can do a search and pick your favorite news report for the scoop). An Australian activist group called
Collective Shout has claimed victory for this by calling them on the phone repeatedly.
July 24, 2025:
Itch.io"deindexed" ALL adult-themed games from their website and instituted draconian and vague regulations in addition to eliminating any appeal process. ("Deindexing" simply means you cannot use their website to search for ANY nsfw project. You'd have to type "itch gay nsfw games" into a search engine and then use the results rather than the website itself). Itch has cited Visa, MasterCard, Stripe, and PayPal pushing standards on them and recently stated they're l
ooking for other payment providers but they also handled the situation poorly and gave zero notice in addition to holding creator earnings hostage.
July 25, 2025: UK begins enforcement of the Online Safety Act 2023 which requires adults to actually take a selfie with a valid ID or share other invasive data like banking info, credit cards, etc. to verify age to access adult content or use dating platforms. Many of the UK residents on the Str8 Discord server have quite literally had to take a selfie just to login .
Moderated Content
Make no mistake: this isn't even about glorifying; in many cases it just applies to "containing." This has led to arguments over shows like Game of Thrones or Star Wars being banned because they contain incest (Sorry folks, Luke technically kissed his sister in a galaxy far away). "Non-consensual" sex was banned, leading Patreon to actually requiring characters to verbally say their age and each give consent before any action happened in stories, comics, or games (they've reversed this in time). It also lead to a large number of sexual abuse surviving authors having their works removed from Itch because their story of overcoming abuse "contained" non-consensual acts.
Thus far, all platforms have blamed payment providers. Meaning that companies like Visa, MasterCard, Stripe, and PayPal can institute policies that regulate what you're allowed to buy or not buy as an adult even if the content is legal in the area. Thus, content companies have imposed excessive banning of legal content to comply with the payment providers or risk losing all payment options.
Who's Fault is it?
So far, groups like
Collective Shout have claimed responsibility and state they were able to organize 1,000 phone calls to Visa and MasterCard to get them to suspend the content. Others will cite a
court case involving Visa and MasterCard being the financial processor for the laundering of illicit material related to OnlyFans back in 2023, which opened the flood gates for broad applications of the laws and for groups to attack the flow of money rather than the platforms individually. It's also worth mentioning that many activist groups cite
any LGBT content as being "pornographic"-- regardless of whether it contains adult themes or not-- sometimes leading to the overt elimination and silencing of LGBT voices in the arts and media because it's considered perverse. And still others just state that payment providers are just pushing a Puritan agenda and being cunts.
What Can We Do?
Help.
Regardless of your political ideology, these draconian practices will eventually try to eliminate something that you're interested in. Straight!? and hundreds of projects like it have already been delisted but groups like Collective Shout have previously gone after games like GTA 5 and are now starting a campaign to target Twitter porn and even Playboy because it's impossible to satiate unhappy people.

1. Call payment providers like Visa, MasterCard, Stripe, and PayPal. Be polite and don't cuss them out. Just take up a ton of their time. They're gonna have a really hard time running a business when they're tied up with bullshit calls from adults that want to purchase legal material in their area with their own money they're paying interest on.
Call and file Online Complaints.
This website has a full template with contact numbers for Visa, MasterCard, Stripe, and PayPal. Some companies require complaints to actually have a follow-up process so keep them busy.
2. Call legislators. In the US, there's current a bill entitled
Fair Access to Banking Act for your consideration but generally make a point to let them know you support legislation that prevents financial companies from denying services based on... just whatever. It may help to specifically cite Visa and MasterCard.
3. Sign Petitions.
We're stronger together. Visa and MasterCard have already started releasing public statements about being overwhelmed with calls so this is actually working. Many of you ask how you can help, this not only affects Straight!? but it affects other creators that you may enjoy and it will affect creators in the future. Honestly, it affects the freedom of artistic expression.
Alright, enough politics. Just help if you can
All the love,
-Aaryn
