Jack is 18 years old. He has just graduated from high school and is preparing himself to enjoy his summer vacation. With a heatwave hitting the country and his parents gone for a week, he plans to play a lot of Call of Shooty under the fresh kiss of the a/c and regularly dip himself in the pool.

But Eve, his sister, has a different agenda. They can hardly stand each other and yet will have to spend the week alone together. Or maybe not, as Eve has invited her best friend, Cassie, to join her for a week of lounging by the pool.

How Jack will handle the situation depends on you.
 

 
Summer Scent is a branching story that your decisions and actions will shape. Through a combination of key choices and affinity points, you will influence the narrative and decide a path for you to walk. Your choices will have consequences, good or bad, pleasurable or nefarious, wholesome or destructive. There are eighteen different paths for you to explore.

Summer Scent includes some strong content that may not be suitable for your tastes. Some scenes may also show disturbing and violent outcomes.

This game is not for the faint of heart.

 I do not own a Mac, therefore I did not test the mac release.

Summer Scent v0.6.4a

Summer Scent v0.6.4a is now available for download.
  • Starting today, April 3rd, for Sailing Masters, Tide Riders and Sea Artists.
  • April 10th, for Gunners

Changelog v0.6.4a:
  • Some images have been reworked and rerendered, on both Day 5 and Day 6.
  • Several typos have been corrected. There will be more, of course.
  • A few bugs have been dealt with.
  • A Discord link has been added to the main menu.
  • A few elements of the script have been changed. It's for the better.

Changelog v0.6.4:
  • Day 2 Scenes 1 and 10 have been reworked.
  • New content: Day 6 Scenes 26 and 27. These scenes are the endings of the Evil Asshole and Psychotic Knight paths. These paths are now complete.
  • In total, the update is about 22k words long, with 700 renders and 7k lines of code.
  • Music. For the whole of Day 1, Day 2 Scenes 1 and 10 and Day 6 Scenes 26 and 27. The default volume has been set to 50%.
  • Some achievements have disappeared, and some others have appeared.
  • The Preferences screen has been reworked to include a volume slider and a taboo switch.
  • Minor edits to the ending screens.
  • Dozens of typos have been corrected.
  • The Renpy engine has been updated. Summer Scent now runs on Renpy 8.2.1

Dev Update #247


The week was pretty poor productively speaking.

Day 6 Scene 28.
I started posing the scene but as you can see on the Trello board, I didn't progress much. As always, the first shot of a sequence takes quite some time to pose. It's about initializing the starting conditions of a whole series of images. You have to place and fully pose every character, set up the props, check the lights... These are the foundations upon which the entire set rests. Given the extensive loading times I have to deal with, I really don't want to make a mistake there.
You can also note that I spent some time on "additional material". Scene 28 starts with the team watching TV and I needed something to display on the screen. I had to decide on a very simple story fitting my needs, create a couple of characters and environments, and pose a handful of shots. It took quite some time for just 4 shots but I don't really have a choice. I don't want to use "external material" anymore and I need the screen to tell a precise story as it will play a role in the discussion.
I now have all the material I need for the next 80 shots or so. I should be able to progress faster.

Steam.
I really underestimated the work required to properly set up a store page on Steam. There are many images and text to produce. I thought about producing some new and specific artwork for what Steam names "capsules" (Basically: the banners and the buttons.) but I will finally use the title screen I use at the moment. It works most of the time. It's a bit more complicated with vertical capsules but I think it works.
The real problem is in the text. At that point, I feel like I'm kind of decent when it's about writing fiction but I'm dogshit weak when it comes to promotional stuff and marketing language. There is a ton of text required and everything I wrote so far smells like complete and utter crap. And I'm supposed to seduce the eventual Steam player with that text. I'm doomed.
I hope to be done with both the store page and the initial build of the game and set everything for validation before the end of this month.
I have to confess that I am kind of terrified to make a mistake that would ruin everything. If Summer Scent isn't successful on Steam, things are going to get difficult for me very quickly.

Dev Update #246


Some good. Some bad.
The week has been pretty slow. There has been progress on one side and kind of a setback on another side. Let's start with the good.

Steam!
I finally validated the tax and KYC process and I am now a Steamwork partner. That was a stressful adventure. As I live in a quite rural area, my address doesn't even show on Google Maps and I always have issues when filling up that w-8ben form. This time was no different. The KYC thing was another kind of problem. My ID has apparently expired and my driver's license is 28 years old. But it has been sorted out and I'm now ready for the next step. I'll start working on the app itself next week.

Day 6 Scene 28
It's written and cut, ready to be posed. It's 5378 words long and I planned 179 shots to go with it. I hoped to start posing it before the end of this week but I was delayed.

Daz 4.22
I updated my software. And this is where we talk about the bad stuff.
Daz 4.22 comes with a lot of great stuff, like volumetric shaders and improved loading times. However, it also comes with a huge caveat: ghost lights do not behave like they used to in the previous versions. And that's a huge issue for me as 90 % of my lighting comes from ghost lights. I knew I would have to rework the light in all my sets but I had reasonable hopes that it would work. So I spent about two days trying to adapt my usual setup for 4.22 and I got some decent results but with some significant differences. And these differences are very visible, especially in the day scenes. This is a huge issue as I don't plan to reshoot the rework or Day 6. So I'm not sure what to do. For the coming update, I will continue working with Daz 4.16. But not upgrading to a newer version of Daz isn't viable in the long term. I will most likely try to upgrade my hardware next year, and Daz 4.16 will probably be unable to render on an RTX 5090. I won't have a choice then. I will be forced to make the jump. And I don't like that idea.

Dev Update #245


Steam Progress.
The account has been created, and some forms have been filled. I have now to wait for the IRS to validate my tax information. There shouldn't be any issues but it is a bit stressful nonetheless.
I will have to renew my marketing material. I should have done so long ago but didn't find the time to. The pool picture is still ok, but I'll have to produce more "promotional pictures". I'll probably stream the process on Discord.

Day 6 Scene 28
It's 4348 words so far. And that's way less than what I expected. However, I'm only done with the first draft. I'm reviewing and reworking parts of it and the final word count might go up a bit. I don't think it will dramatically increase though. A high word count isn't synonymous with quality and I'm not trying to pump it up just for the sake of blasting big numbers. I feel like something is missing in the current version of the scene. Some emotions don't come out as I want them to and I have to work on that. This is supposed to be an important scene for all the characters and an opportunity for some character growth. I can't screw that up.
Barring any writer's block or total lack of inspiration, I will probably be done with writing the scene by Tuesday. I'll then have to take care of upgrading Daz as I will have to pose the scene and I won't be able to postpone that software update any longer.

Dev Update #244

Administrative progress.
I'm still stuck in administrative hell but there is progress. I had the answers I needed to do the paperwork and I submitted it. I now have to wait for the changes to be fully effective before I can go see my bank with my new "commercial name", among other things. I've been told the process would take three to four days. It's already been five and nothing has changed. I didn't expect them to be especially fast on that anyway.
I should have taken care of all that stuff long ago. It wasn't important as long as I wasn't making much money but I do hope to make more with Steam. So... Here I am, in need of getting things straight if I don't want the tax man to hunt me down and break my legs.

Day 6 part 5
As I have finished the story map for all the remaining Day 6 scenes, I can announce that the development of v0.6.5 has begun.
This time, I'm starting with the new content rather than the rework.
I'm working on the first scene of the update: Scene 28, which is the evening scene for the Moronic Hero path. Scene 29 will be its counterpart on the main branch. The two scenes will share a similar structure but their content will be very different.
It's always a bit difficult to get back into the character after a long break from writing and it took some time before could write something satisfying. The scene is 1650 words long for now and I think I've covered about a third of the content. I expected it to be bigger than that. We'll see when I'll be done. If I don't reach the 15k word threshold with these two scenes and the rework of Day 2 Scene 2, that update will seem pretty thin.
